Long story short.
Had a tooth, that got a root canal and crown. This time, last year.
Tooth broke off. Like crown is glued to tooth. Gaping hole in my mouth.
What should I expect?

Where is the tooth?
I had a root canal and a crown on a back molar. The gum would get a little puffy, and I would take care of it with a few leftover antibiotics. This is not a good idea, by the way.
I finally confessed what was going on to the dentist after more than a few years. The x-ray came back questionable so he sent me to the oral surgeon for a "better" x-ray. He said it definitely needed to come out. However, since it was a back molar, he didn't recommend an implant. He said he put inplants in all the time, but given the position, it was really unnecessary.
When he extracted it, it turned out the tooth was cracked. I did the extraction with a local, but I was startled at how hard he had to pull to remove it. I don't think a "root canal" always removes all the roots.
Just my opinion.

My crowns are all on my back molars. I have already decided I am not replacing the crowns. Don't have $$$ for implants.

Fourth on in from the left counting when I smile.. Visible when I smile.
I just got off the phone with the dentist. Have to wait until tomorrow to see when I can get into the dentist to see what's what.
At least I can get a flipper until we can deal with the situation with a bit more of a level head.

I'm not in any pain. Which is good.
I emotionally I feel awful. We won't go there. I'm not a vain person..but this is like mortifying.
The on-call dentist told me that it likely doesn't need to be dealt with right.this.minute. So we can travel as planned. And I can have a flipper done for said travel.
I'm still in the optimal trimester for dental care. So..I can't do much about it now other than just wait and see.

It sounds like I want an implant over a bridge.
I don't want my other teeth getting ground down..

Eh. I had a lower right molar pulled out over 20 years ago due to an abcess. I didn't have insurance at the time and getting it pulled was cheaper than a root canal. So out it went. I haven't bothered with replacing it or anything. Only bothers me when I eat something with a sharp edge and it jabs in. Otherwise, meh. I have another tooth that is probably going to go the same way on the upper left. Only because I broke it years ago and it was pasted back together but is falling apart again. I'm a grump so it's not like anyone sees me smile anyway.

OK. It's not so bad. I mean, it's not great. There was likely a hairline fracture in my tooth that couldn't be detected, hence the break. No infection.
Full price Ball park of the implant is about 4K.
However, I have supplemental dental insurance to cover 1500 of the costs.
Because the dentist just made my crown for the tooth last year, he's not going to charge me to make another one. That will save another 1K.
So, we're looking at 1500 if I don't get the flipper..if I don't have any other insurance coverage. They seem to think I might have more coverage..
The nice thing is it won't be due all at once, and we have some flexibility on paying for it...(I ended up getting a care card last year to help space out dental costs.)
I have to get blessings from my OB to get what's left of my tooth removed, though...

I'm sorry! I got a front implant done about 3 years ago. I had my adult tooth knocked cleanly out of my mouth, root and all, in a playground accident when I was 8. The kids found the tooth in the sand as I sat there bleeding, haha, and my dentist actually put the tooth back in my mouth, cemented it into place for the time being, then shortly thereafter I had a root canal in two or three stages. I had to have two or three caps put on it, but it survived all my orthodonture because the dead root fused to my jawbone, so it stayed there until the root canal ruptured about 4 years ago. The implant was really expensive, but my parents paid for it, as they had planned to after the accident happened no matter how old I was. which I will forever owe them for. I had to have a bone graft first since the bone at that tooth had deteriorated, but I haven't had any problems with it besides a nasty cavity on the side of the front neighbor tooth, because of the trauma of the implant going in weakening it. I hope this lasts me a long time so I don't have to get it re-done. I was always worried about what would happen when the old tooth finally failed because it's literally my right front tooth and I couldn't not have a tooth there... also the flipper I had for 6 months looked pretty decent and unless i pointed it out you wouldn't have noticed it. Good luck, I hope at least they can get the remains of the tooth removed safely for now, a flipper is not a bad option for a while!

1500 seems not bad at all for an implant. Sorry you have to deal with this, especially only a year from getting the root canal/crown done. When you least expect it! And even if it doesn't hurt you have the space in your mouth/edges of the tooth to feel and remind you.

My dad always seemed to end up losing his tooth after getting a root canal and crown, too. I think they tend to get more brittle or something.

I had a tooth that cracked under the gum line. I had quite a few dentists tell me that there was no saving it, have it pulled, get an implant. Then I found my current dentist who did a root canal, and put a crown on it. I'm not going to lie, it was one of those legendary root canal's from hell that you hear about. After it was done she said to me "Hmm.... well that was interesting you only see these cases in text books" I'm confused, did your dentist say that he can re-crown it? He calls the fake new implant tooth a crown. I'll need a new one made, but he'll cover the costs, because we just had one done last year. I'm supposing it will be easy enough to reproduce.

Have you tried putting the tooth under your pillow?
(Sorry. Couldn't resist.)
I hope you can get your smile back without too much hassle or discomfort.

Ugh. Fucking pregnancy - damn parasites are lucky that they're cute. I broke three teeth during my second pregnancy. My teeth already suck (soft enamel and/or dentin defects), and pregnancy just wrecked them all to hell.
One of the molars I broke during pregnancy sheered off at the gum line when the dentist was trying to remove the temporary crown to fit the permanent crown. Ultimately I ended up having the rest of the tooth pulled and got a bridge. An implant would have required a sinus lift (? I forget what it was actually called) to build up my bone with some extra cadaver bone. Since my other molars are also weak and would maybe have eventually needed crowns anyway, my dentist recommended a bridge.
At 39, I feel too young to have a bridge, but it's the story of my dental life. Solidarity on the mortifying part. I don't know what I would have done if it was in the front. (Probably would have gotten an implant.)

I hope you can get your smile back without too much hassle or discomfort. Not anymore. The dentist is now the proud owner of my gimpy tooth. Although, the peanut was lobbying for me to leave the tooth out for the tooth fairy... And the she wanted me to give her the dollar. <sigh>

And the she wanted me to give her the dollar. <sigh> At least she has a relatively normal reaction to kids' fairy tales like the tooth fairy. My oldest (the one who was tough as a little guy) was horrified at the idea of the tooth fairy for many reasons. His initial reaction was distrust and fear - why would some weirdo want to come into my bedroom at night when I'm sleeping?!? And to make things more complicated, he couldn't imagine why he'd want to give away his precious tooth. He already had a dollar, thanks, he'd rather keep his awesome tooth. While I can't fault his logic, it's a good example of why he wasn't an easy kid to deal with. You could never predict what his reaction to something (other kids would consider) benign would be.

That is relatively good news. But...under the philosophy of "hope for the best but plan for the worst"..... My wife is going through the same exact thing right now. Her tooth with the crown just fell out. She has had the root removed and bone graft about 3 weeks ago, she gets the implant in about 2 months, and the new crown should be done by about Jan 1. We were told the same thing, about $3000 to $3500 for the implant. Than the root was hard to get out so extra anesthetic, than she needed a bone graft and that is extra, etc, etc. The actual cost start to finish will be about $5000 to $6000. Seems like everyone I have heard from the implant ends up being more than the usual $3000 to $3500 they quote. Right...I understand there are no guarantees. And while I appreciate the guidance..things might be a little different...for me..(Being pregnant is a biggie...and my dentist gave me a ball park that was higher than what you seemed to quote. And I'm wondering if your wife is getting comped the fake tooth or if she has to pay for that...) I've spent the past 4-5 months planning for the worst. At some point, I need to start planning for things to be OK.

I had a mouth full of broken, jagged molars. I had 5 crowns and a root canal down in one year. All four back molars have crowns. Did them two at a time. I can only afford implants if my dad wins the lottery. Might be able to do it if I went to Mexico, but not here. Insurance covered crowns except for impressions. Not convinced I needed the crowns now. My insurance in the Denver area was all at chain dental places. Here it is at an individual dentist. In Colorado, there was a cavity or something every 6 months. Here, I've never needed a thing besides annual cleanings. Dentist here made the comment that the chains are not always a good option.
