Have you sent food back to the kitchen because you didn't like how it was prepared? I have sent steaks back that were too rare to be refired. Last night, we went to Dennys and I got a chicken cheesesteak. The bun was soggy and the onion rings weren't cooked enough. However, i just ate the insides of the sandwich and gnoshed a few onion rings. I could have sent it back but i didn't really feel like it. I figured it wasn't my last meal on earth so no biggie! lol Anyway, I just won't bother to go back. What say you?

I send food back if it is cold or undercooked. When I pay for a meal, I expect it to be cooked properly and served in a timely fashion.

I only eat at places that are gluten aware. If I've ordered specifically and it comes obviously +gluten I will send it back.

I have set back food twice. #1 was I ordered a baked potato plain - it came with butter in it. #2 - the waitress brought me the wrong food.

I've only sent food back once: prime rib that was rare when I had specifically stated that I wanted it well done. I cannot abide rare meat of any kind. Meat must be brown all the way through the middle. (I do not care what anyone thinks of that. It's my food, I'm paying for it, I get to decide how done I want it.) I like to make sure my food is dead before I eat it.
My late uncle's second wife was very high-maintenance and something of an attention whore. I never liked going out to dinner with her because she always sent her food back. Always. Every. Single. Time. If she felt she was not getting enough attention from her dinner companions, she would send it back more than once. I didn't like her. (Still don't, but she lives on the other side of the country, my uncle passed away 10 years ago, and I don't have to go out to dinner with her anymore.)

Only sent food back once. I usually order steak only at restaurants that specialize in steaks because I like them rare and most regular restaurants over cook them. Was at an Outback, ordered rare and when delivered it was brown all the way through (medium well - well done). They were good about it. Both waiter and manager immediately acknowledged that it was improperly done and replaced it with a nice rare steak.

I don't send it back, I just send it away. I don't trust to eat it after it was sent back

I have, though it's been awhile. I've sent steak back for being too rare, and if I get something I didn't order, I will let the wait staff know - usually they just have me keep the wrong side item, and bring me the one I ordered.
My worst experience was at an Applebee's (and why I no longer eat there). I was 9 months pregnant (so obviously hormonal), and starving. I ordered a chicken fried steak. They bring out a chicken fried chicken. I was not eating that - I didn't want it and the thought of eating it made me want to gag. So I asked for the chicken fried steak that I had ordered. They took my entire plate back (remember, hangry pregnant woman here - they could have left my sides because I was starving). When they finally brought out my food, the gravy was watery and not thick and creamy - so disgusting my husband even commented. So back it went. Of course, DH was done with his meal (minus half his fries that I had eaten) by this time. To try and make up for everything, they gave me a free dessert - which of course had a hair in it. I didn't say anything, we just didn't eat it, paid and left. Blech. And part of the reason I now try to eat at local places in lieu of chains.

... I figured it wasn't my last meal on earth so no biggie! lol ... What say you? Seems you gambled and won. This time. But next time, God only knows. Think about the horror of your dying thought being, "I just ate a soggy bun and undercooked onion rings as my last meal on this Earth." I say you should always send back a less than perfect meal, just on case.

I once wasn't charged for my side dinner salad after finding a used band-aid in it. Slipped off the salad preparer's finger

I hate people like this. They think the restaurant is theirs, all theirs. And they tend to abuse staff as well. They will take their meanness out on busboys, hostesses - anyone they can.
Truth be told, most restaurants want to know if you are unhappy. If you have to send food back, do it nicely and quietly, but don't accept second-rate anything when you pay for it. And when something is done right, let the staff know. They really do appreciate it. And they will take extra care of you on your return visits, if you are a good and decent customer.

Any time I've every sent anything back I've been extra polite and almost sorry to have to do it... and I've always had 110% politeness back and people going out of their way to make me happy. I've had them try to comp meals, but I just want gfree food, not free food. Although I will take a salad or fries while I wait for my refire

Looks like it's chicken substituted for steak in a traditional cheese steak hoagie. Don't mess with perfection. During college in Philly my wife and I loved Larry's mushroom cheese steak belly filler. oped have you tried them?

I have sent food back when I ate meat. Rare means rare. Not medium rare, not medium, not well-done.
Rare.
It's not rocket surgery.

It's confusing. When someone orders a "cheese steak hoagie," there is a very specific expectation as to how the meat is sliced and cooked as well as expectations for what enhancements and toppings might be included. Calling a chicken version of the sandwich a "chicken cheese steak hoagie" actually conveys a lot of information, not just the fact that it is a hoagie with chicken on it. It tells the purchaser to expect thinly sliced chicken cooked on a flat top grill with likely certain additions that are traditional to the area or to the establishment where it is prepared. A "chicken cheese steak hoagie" might sound odd to the uninitiated, but it does have a certain amount of sound reasoning behind it.

I've sent things back a lot - but it's not a frequent thing. Most often reason - overcooked meat. (Though I've gotten undercooked chicken several times.) I only order steak (or lamb) from places that should know how to cook it, and overcooking it just ruins it. I love meat and will not eat overcooked meat - unless my own dumbass was the one that overcooked it. Most of the other reasons it's sent back is because it was wrong - like I asked for it without something (like pickles or onions) and it came on it. If I order something and it just comes out and I do not like it I usually don't ask for something else - but I will say most waiters are nice and observant and when they see me barely eating it they ask if something's wrong. I usually not really, I just thought I'd like this and it turns out I didn't or that I didn't realize the dish had X (something I hate) and they usually insist I order something else even if I demure at first saying it's my own fault.
I just seem to have the crappy luck in life where everyone else's dish at the table is fine and mine is the one they fuckup.

Lol. We sent my 9 year old's plate back last night. She had pork tacos at the Hawaiian place and we'd asked for all toppings to be on the side so she could figure a. if she liked them and b. put on the amount she wanted. Th ed coleslaw was on them. I'd have scrapped it off but the server heard dd say something. So they took it back to the kitchen and scrapped it off for us. Lol. They apologized and we all moved on.
I watch dh's food because of the gluten and dairy issues. We've sent stuff back due to having dairy or gluten on it.
We've requested replacement sides a couple of times, where the original order was correct, just really nasty or poorly cooked.
I've sent a very undercooked burger back but I think that's it for meat. This burger was mooing. I think they comped my whole meal that time. I order well done but am ok with lightly pink in the middle. I've eaten around pink meat a few times too, figuring the leftovers will cook it the rest of the way.

I like certain cuts on the rarer side (chateaubriand, sirloin and other high-end, thick cuts just seem to need less cooking, because the meat is tender to start with). Other tougher cuts I do prefer on the well done end of the spectrum.

Only if it is really wrong or unsafe.
Actually did last night. We are at Zaxbys, which is fast food chicken finger place. I ordered chicken Caesar salad and DH had fingers dipped in hot sauce. The order taker entered wrong and I got a salad with hot sauce chicken fingers. My DH picked up the order and knew it was wrong but asked if I wanted it anyway. I like hot fingers but not on my salad. They gladly replaced and apologized about the delay.
Also I detest ketchup. At a fast food place I have sent back burgers with ketchup. No I can not scrape it off because I can still taste even a tiny amount.

I have never sent a meal back, I just eat what I'm given. I did get chewed out by a waitress once for not saying something when she brought me the wrong food. Didn't matter to me, I'm not picky. And to jump on the meat wagon..I like most of mine pink and cold. Cooking just ruins the taste.
