We keep a few hundred in an envelope that's hidden in the house. Our small safe was stolen when our house was broken into a couple of years ago and it had some cash and important papers in it, so we don't keep a safe any more. Important papers are hidden with the cash. Both DH and I know where they are but if we die together then the kids will have fun finding it when they clean out the house. You experience with the burglary is a good demonstration that a safe that is movable isn't all that safe.

All I used to keep in my safe were papers that were only valuable to me like the house abstract and birth certificates and such. I never locked it because I would rather a thief opened and saw that rather than take it away and realize it later. One day my older son when he was maybe 5 or 6 decided to help me out by locking it and I have no idea what the combination is anymore. It used to be on a sticker inside my desk cabinet door, but that desk was thrown out after a flood. So, it's been locked up tight for 10 years or so now.

I bought a new one...actually 2 because I lost the first replacement.

Don't use much cash so I don't keep it at home. Just whatever is in my purse.
I do have a small fireproof lockbox where important papers are kept.
I would never keep a gun in my home.

Mine is screwed to the floor. Most burglars want in and out quick while the alarm is going off. The rule of thumb is 14 minutes from the time the alarm goes off and the call goes unanswered. It'd take more than 14 minutes to remove my safe. My guns are in there now but all my jewelry is in the safe deposit box.

I live in hurricane country but unless my city is in the cone I don't keep a lot of cash. Have time to get to bank. But I get about $1,000 out. I lived without power for a month and half the town was without powe so cash was king. But I also try to have supplies in place so not running around flashing cash. Plenty of warning where hurricanes are concerned. Not like earthquake or tornados. now I see understand the subject. so if there was some kind of emergency and cash is needed. how accessible is your cash? I was thinking. sure of course I would keep cash in a safe deposit box. but if there is an emergency of cash is needed now and the bank is closed. what then? or ATM is down. like for example if I needed money to pay for a tow truck services at night. I still will go with - yes! I would keep cash in a bank deposit box

I keep about $700 cash in my purse at all times, you just never know. That zombie apocalypse hits and I want to eat or be able to get home from where ever I am. LOL! I don't get into it often, had a thousand for a long time, need to add to boost it back up.

People have been known to get robbed coming out of a store.

I never carry much cash unless we are on vacation. If I charge the expenses, purchase records are accessible online. At home, I keep a few hundred in cash for emergencies like the widespread power outage we had 5 years ago when local businesses were operating on alternative power for one week. Important documents are kept in a fire proof box, but if they are lost, they are easily replaced.

Tow companies don't take credit cards? Some do and some don't. Called one about six years ago and no cash and he didn't take cc. He did take a check though. Been a while so maybe most do now. Heck cabs have cc machines in cabs too.
