Also do you keep some in a safe at home? I have an uncle who says he has $100,000 cash in his home safe. I don't know if I would feel that comfortable with it in my house unless the safe is large enough it can't be moved easily.

I hope your uncle doesn't broadcast that information.

I keep a couple of thousand in small bills in the home safe in case of hurricanes. Being in SW FL, hurricanes can happen and in the past if they're serious, your area can be without power for several weeks. Means your credit card is useless.
Keeping large amounts of cash is risky, though. Not just for safety reasons but because even high quality safes aren't fireproof. They're rated based on how long they withstand fire but it's highly dependent on how hot the fire gets and most home versions aren't even rated to last an hour. I had an acquaintance whose house burned down and the cash in his safe was also incinerated... about $150k.

The info travels fast - so many people are involved. First, the retailer. They often talk to their friends, especially if the safe is large. Second, the delivery people. Third, the installers - especially if digging and concrete are involved. If it is placed in your basement, buried, and set in concrete - there are now several people who know your address, where your safe is located in your house, and how large your safe is.

Yes but it takes time. Something burglars try to not to waste. Especially with an alarm going off.

There are limits to what you can do with a large amount of cash. Sure, milee's hurricane won't have you dropping $10,000+ at a time, but you would raise the fed's interest if you had to deposit this to cover an emergency like major hospitalization, pay off your mortgage, etc. Also, the hurricane might alert people that you had a lot of cash. We have about $150 in cash in the house. That would cover a small cash-only emergency but nothing more. We'd hate to lose it, of course, but we'd happily hand it over without blinking if a robber asked. I'm less sure of $100,000. That would at least make me blink.

I almost never use cash so don't feel a need to keep any around in a safe deposit box or in my house.

No I would not keep a large amount of cash either in my home or in a safe deposit box. If I need cash, I pull it out of the bank account.
I keep a $20 bill in the glove compartment of our autos (thinking up bumping it up to $50)

I do not keep a lot of cash at home. The contents of your safe deposit box are not safe or insured.

I do recommend having a fire proof box to store important papers.

I live in hurricane country but unless my city is in the cone I don't keep a lot of cash. Have time to get to bank. But I get about $1,000 out. I lived without power for a month and half the town was without powe so cash was king. But I also try to have supplies in place so not running around flashing cash. Plenty of warning where hurricanes are concerned. Not like earthquake or tornados.

We keep some petty cash at home..mostly it's my SE income...and a bit of DH's BD present. It's a couple hundred.
We don't have a safe at home.
We don't feel the need to keep money in a safe deposit box, even though we have one.
I could see reasons, though, for keeping money in safe deposit box, rather than a bank account. Getting ready to divorce an abusive spouse comes to mind. I'd want money squirreled away that was off the books.
I had relatives (siblings of Grandma and Grandpa) that kept a decent amount of cash stashed round the house. It made cleaning out the house after they passed away a bit of a PITA.

Maybe in the Fall when the deer hunters are out it will show up in a neighboring valley.

One of our aircraft containers (for a B727) got sucked out of an aircraft hanger never to be found as far as I know. Probably ended up in some wooded area far from homes. Those things weight about 500lbs. each.

I generally have about $500 in cash at home (that includes the change jar and whatever's in pockets/couch cushions). The only money in the safe deposit box are curiosities - $2 bills and pre-1950's paper money.
When I was going thru my mom safe deposit box, I found $1000 in twenties. The bills had dates from the 1960's thru current. From the envelope it was in I concluded this was an emergency fund of sorts. I didn't do anything with money other than to "deal with it later" - well, 10 years went past and I revisited the money. I realized that the value of that money was getting smaller and smaller the longer it stayed in the box. I imagine the $20 she put away in the '60's represented a lot of money - will the $20 she put in in the 1980's didn't buy as much. I pulled the money and distributed it to the grand kids.
I just can't imagine ever needing a lot of cash on hand.

🎵I know who's ym houses I'm going to rob, houses I'm going to rob🎵
I fill up my tank and buy some food. So if I'm in the worst case scenario I can drive long enough until I get some place I can use my cc. It is helpful to have family spread throughout the state as well as living in the center of it.

I pull $200 from the ATM at a time so I never have more than that on hand. Most recently, I was down to $20 and that lasted for a month. I know I'm vulnerable to power outages in natural catastrophes (I live in Tornado Alley) but so far that hasn't happened and, as justme said, I can drive somewhere unless a Joplin-type tornado roars through here and the car is gone.
My home safe contains jewelry and important papers such as my passport- I have only a few pieces of jewelry out at a time. One necklace is a half-Krugerrand. That would keep me in groceries for awhile.

I don't live anywhere that I'd ever face power being out for weeks on end over a large area. Worst I've ever experienced is 3 or 4 days 20 years ago and even then it was localized. A couple miles away it was business as usual.

We keep a few hundred in an envelope that's hidden in the house. Our small safe was stolen when our house was broken into a couple of years ago and it had some cash and important papers in it, so we don't keep a safe any more. Important papers are hidden with the cash. Both DH and I know where they are but if we die together then the kids will have fun finding it when they clean out the house.

I like to keep about $5K on hand. I'm with Sarah, I keep a few thousand in the safe at home. The safe is bolted into the concrete floor and if I'm not home the security system is armed. If I'm at home my Walther 380 is also loaded and readily available.

I keep about $5k in cash at home, just my gambling bankroll. It's hidden in a place nobody is going to find it, which to me is a lot safer from burglary than a safe. If the house goes up in flames, it's gone...but "fireproof" safes aren't really all that "fireproof" if the house actually burns up.

I'm a Defense Engineer, one of the big threats that we design for is Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP). There are various levels of EMP Hardening, EMP Compatibility, etc. And different levels of EMP - eg, a high altitude nuclear explosion can shut down all electricity/electronics for many miles it even stops car engines. In a War Scenario it effectively takes out all communication systems - TV radios, radar, engine computers. All retail stores, banks, ATMs would be blinded. Ie, there would be no access to electronic money - no bank accounts, no cc's. We design military electronics to be EMP Hardened, but that is a matter of degree. Some of the Airport GPS & radar is Hardened to guard against the 1000's of airliners all crashing at once and killing 100,000's of people. Air Force One is the ultimate EMP Hardened asset, it can withstand a Nuclear EMP w/o damage to computers, communications, w/o loss of radar, etc. (That adds an extra billion or so to the cost, the wiring needs special shielding). In a disaster, the Prez remains in high altitude flight in AF One, the VP is moved to a Hardened Bunker that is similarly equipped with Hardened communications, survival supplies, etc. And we have Hardened Communication Centers around the globe, some of which will be available to the Prez & VP. They can provide Intel and in-flight refueling for AF One.

I would think at that point money would be more useful as toilet paper for those who survived. I won't be one of them this close to Macdill

I don't think Smalltown, Southern MN is high on the EMP bombing target risk either.

$20k sometimes at home, we go on a trip put it in safety deposit box. Don't leave it here in case of breakin.
Haven't been to bank to get it out again.
