So, daughter has decided to try public school! If that works out, I'm pretty much done with the homeschool thing two years early. What should i do now? I have some ideas, but I'll take suggestions And... what a craptastic amount of paperwork is required to register someone in public school... Oh, also, when I asked if she had to shower for gym class the guidance counselor looked horrified by the very idea, so I guess that's changing some places anyway?

Why ask us? What do YOU want to do now? 🙂 I'm really just making conversation. Don't you want to talk about how much paperwork enrolling a kid requires?

I've kinda stopped doing all that stuff and just act like I didn't know it was required. About half the time they give up asking me if I just smile and act vacant.

I daydream of starting my own school. But I'm not sure I have the strength. I think about maybe fostering teens. I do have a list of calls to make tomorrow about bringing my teachers licence back into compliance... not sure I'd like that, but wouldn't mind benefits for a few years. An alternative type position might be nice. But the bureaucracy... I could barely enroll kiddo without letting the f word slip at the sheer number of forms, I'm not sure I can get back to that daily grind? I could just freelance write and do vipkid, and read and cook and never see people ever unless I want to... .... some days that sounds awesome!

Awww...come and visit me...I can keep you plenty busy.. Otherwise, if I were you, I'd take a tatting class, catch up on all the netflix, and make really big ass dents in my couch. And weed. (my flower garden, not the 420 kind.) (Retirement is going to be very sexy for me..)

I mean she made me fill out all the personal info at the top of the 'have you ever been expelled from a diffent school form' and then just write N/A On it...

I do have a list of calls to make tomorrow about bringing my teachers liscence back into compliance... not sure I'd like that, but wouldn't mind benefits for a few years. An alternative type position might be nice. But the bureaucracy... I could just freelance write and do vipkid, and read and cook and never see people ever unless I want to... .... some days that sounds awesome! Don't worry too much about the public school paperwork, you just don't have them trained yet. I'll bet you went in and asked what you needed to do to enroll. Instead, start taking the approach where you either just drop your kid off or just casually mention this is your kid and she'll be starting now. See the difference? That's how you navigate public school BS. I figured this out when I was once traveling for a couple of weeks and discovered DH didn't do or turn in any of the paperwork during that time. I was totally freaked out. But guess what? Nothing happened. :-o. And that's when I realized 99% of the junk they ask for isn't really necessary so why are we wasting our time on it?

I could just freelance write and do vipkid, and read and cook and never see people ever unless I want to... .... some days that sounds awesome! This is timely. I worked registration today. Today was "make-up registration," which basically means those who missed and those with special problems. There's paperwork for sure, but we were both the greeters and the last people they saw when they exited. So the other guy and I made a point to make sure to ask, "Did everything go ok?" or "Is everything cool?" or "Did you get what you needed?" We had ONE person who was angry who said that the bookkeeping program was down and she wasted an hour and was late to work. The rest simply smiled and said, "It was fine. Thank you!" I think people expect registration, particularly for a new district or from home school/public school, to have hoops to jump through. Why wouldn't they? The hoops range from proof of registry to online registration to payment of fees to parking to IDs to other stuff. How can there NOT be hoops although some of these (online registration/payment of fees) can be done in advance for returning students. We have 3,000 students, by the way.

I like milee's approach. I'd even go further and be a bit of an ass telling them: " apologies but I have to run! I'm late for my pottery class or Zumba or my appointment at the hair salon" That just to see the look on their faces and give them something to gossip for the next week!

It's easier just to do the paperwork and get them out of your hair. If you don't, they'll just keep harassing you about it.

They didn't do the showering in gym class thing when I was in high school in the early 2000's. You are just stinky for the rest of the school day.
Regarding what you can do, why not get involved politically? Try running for a local office or organize marches or whatever campaigning for politicians you agree with? You seem to have pretty strong political convictions, now you can act on them.

Are there places that still allow showering after gym? Around here they stopped doing it in the late 80s/early 90's. The reason being gym showers were a place ripe for abuse, either by the teachers or other students sneaking in. You can survive being "stinky" for a few hours till you get home.

This is timely... registration at my daughters' elementary school was yesterday from 2-4. I'm on the PTO board so was there at noon setting up tables to sell merchandise. I go up early to fill-out all the paperwork, hand it in along with my comcast bill as proof of residency and discover that's not good enough. I need gas, electric, water or mortgage/lease. Could I remember any of my online access stuff for any of those companies? Of course, not . I just got back into the office after taking an hour to run up to the school with my newly printed mortgage statement so I could get them enrolled.

They boarded up the showers my freshman year. I have no idea if they later on installed private showers but for the four years I was there were no showers available in the HS locker rooms.

Being much older, I can tell you that we didn't shower in the 60s. Of course that was because there were no showers near the gym in the very old* building we were in. *I was the 4th generation in my family to go to school in that building so it was at least that old. It was torn down shortly after I graduated.

the only thing I showered after was swimming - in practice and during gym. But it was with suits on. I never showered after gym otherwise... no one did.

They made us shower in JH, but we'd usually wrap a towel around ourselves, walk into the big shower area and then walk out. They tried to get stricter with it on a couple occasions. If you played a sport, you could opt out of taking gym in HS, so I only had a single semester of gym in HS. The teacher made us take a shower once. Otherwise, she didn't pay attention if people were. No doubt the boys showered more, but I did my best not to sweat in gym class , and who wants to start form scratch with their hair with 5 minutes to get it looking decent? This was the 80's mind you. Big hair, curling irons and hair spray were the norm.

I honestly don't remember if we had showers or not but also went to really old high school so probably not But the four times a year I dressed out I made sure I didn't get sweaty!
