Who was it who said "We spend the first half of our lives acquiring things, and the second half getting rid of them"?
I admit I had never heard that before. So, I looked it up, the closest I could find was a quote from Lauren Bacall:
You spend a good part of your adult life acquiring things: building a home, filling it with objects that please your eye and make you feel comfortable. Then you spend the last part of your life trying to figure out how to get rid of it all.

I thought rice cookers were unnecessary too, until my mom bought me one. LOVE! I use that thing like crazy because rice is one of the things I seem to mess up. They are also wonderful for steaming veggies. I use mine almost daily!

Cook lots of stuff in it.

Between my mom and my former MIL, a lot of heartburn was created over their "stuff" - when my mom downsized in her older years, every single conversation for 2 years was "what did you do with my ....?" - and it was all stupid stuff like an old tape recorder or a purple top! So her obsession over her "stuff" made you not want to call her and kind of tarnished my last memories of her.
With my MIL, she's mad because my husband inherited some "stuff" from her mom (his grandma) and she wanted it, so 25 years later, she's STILL asking if I have that stuff!! (No, actually, it was stored in boxes in the basement and after moving it twice and almost losing it due to a sump pump malfunction, I sold it and put the money towards something that gave ME pleasure - new countertops! I figure I traded something that gave grandma pleasure for something that gave ME pleasure - and that would make grandma happy!) So we just lie to MIL and say "yes, we have it!" Luckily she lives far enough away that we never have to pull it out to prove it!
And now we are moving and trying to purge all this "STUFF" we have accumulated from others...and I VOW to not get attached to my stuff!! All I ask of my kids is to make sure it finds a home with someone who will appreciate it!

I'm soon to go through the wardrobes and the mantra is... "If you haven't worn it in a year, you a not going to wear it" apart from a few really nice clothes I keep for special occasions. Still clutter builds up and I feel really good after a purge.

Yesterday I went through my dresser drawers and cleaned out all the stuff that the last time I went through them I thought I wanted to keep. I haven't worn any of that stuff since then so out it went.
I decided I would much rather spend time with my elderly parents, my brother and my kids than spending all that time rearranging my stuff to make it look smaller. The only way it will look smaller is to get rid of it. I feel that now I am choosing spending time with people I love is more important than spending time with stuff that stresses me.
