my friends in college used to give me grief when we would go to clubs and I always checked to see where the emergency exits were before I started drinking (er, well, drinking more after pre-gaming while getting ready...but whatever). and then not 2 years after graduation, the Station went up in flames, killing 100 people. nobody gave me shit after that. My ex had training that included the entire video of the Station fire, not just what was shown on television. After that, the first thing he did when we would go out is find two exits. If there were not two exits, we left. He ingrained that in me also and I look for exits.

I was working in DC over Christmas in the early 80's. My college roommate worked for a Representative in DC so I stayed with her. Work loved it because I didn't have to get a hotel.
Anyway, she arranged with my representative for me to tour the White House. It was so beautiful at Christmas time. I don't remember who the president was. Until this president, I would have toured it no matter who was president.

Must be. I didn't vote for Reagan and my friend worked for a Democratic representative. My representative was a Democrat. I would guess in today's world, there is more security on who visits than there was then. She called over to the Justice Department, where I was working with an assistant attorney general on a tax case that was going to trial and he told me since it was my first visit to DC, to take full advantage and see what I wanted to see. So I did.
Made up for that when it came trial time and put in lots of unpaid OT. Trial ran in to Saturday also so I felt like it came out even.

DH and I took the kids to a hotel with and indoor water park. The hotel has staff dress as cartoon characters. One was Rocky Raccoon. DD was about 4 at the time and petrified of all those characters. All weekend we managed to,steer clear of the characters. The last day We ent to get on the elevator. The door opened and in the elevator was Rocky Raccoon. DD took one look at him and ran screaming down the hall. DH and I were laughing too hard to go get her. I'm with your DD, I'm a grown up that hates those things. I was a street fair for the holidays once and on every corner there was a mascot. The worst was the Italian, of the Brewers racing sausages, the jackass kept following me.
Eta...to clarify the sausage was the Italian Sausage, I have no idea what the ethnicity of the person in the costume was. "I have mustard, and I'm not afraid to use it!"

I am out all day entering my car in a car show. when I get back to the hotel. is after a full day of running around, and dinner somewhere local. and back to the room where I just crash and sleep til morning! LOL now with that said when taking the ex-girlfriend - amenities and room service and space! when we went to the Bahamas! that was the best! the room service was fantastic! then second best was when we went to Washington DC! the comfort and space was excellent!

Traveling for pleasure- Location, easy in and out, cleanliness and comfort. Decent food on location and/ or nearby. Size doesn't much matter, as long as it isn't a shoebox, as we don't spend much time there. I used to be big on a view, but I am not really all that insistent on that any more either, for the same reason, and a view sometimes means much more cost. There are exceptions. We had a view of the Canadian Falls from our room years ago when we went to Niagara Canada. I would want that view again. Worth it! We just spent the weekend in Cambridge/ Boston to take in a Sox game on Sunday. Found out Saturday night the hotel did not have that night's game on TV, as they didn't have NESN, so we went to watch in the lounge for a while. I guess that will now be a requirement too, for that kind of trip! Business travel is not a whole lot different, except that I am a lot cheaper. In late June, my siblings and I (4 of us total) went to the Daytona Beach area (Ormond Beach) to visit with the family of a long time friend who had recently died. Older brother stated he would book the rooms for us. We others said fine. The day before we left from our various states to fly to Florida I was on the phone with my sister and told her it would be nice to see the ocean from our hotel rooms. Sister started laughing and told me to make sure I was sitting down. Sister told me it turns out the rooms older brother booked were about 5 miles inland from the ocean by an I-95 entrance/exit. Older brother told us when we got there he was trying to save us some money. Fortunately, the family we visited lived only 5 houses down the road from the beach. So I did get to see the ocean.

I just thought - for myself - when traveling alone a clean room is really required. No stained sheets, or carpet No bed bugs No stained bathroom No stains of blood, or other body fluid No stink
