I look for cleanliness, safety, extra pillows Mom and I had a horrible fight last week because I was exhausted after my 4th day of 9 hours driving and all that we could find was a Super 8 and I was adamant I was sleeping in my car instead. No Super 8's or Motel 6's for me.

Location, wifi, at least a fridge, a microwave would be nice, breakfast and a chain I have rewards with. If I'm staying for more than a night a pool and gym would be nice. I go for Marriott brands first, Holiday Inn second and Hilton or Choice if I have to. Breakfast isn't a hill to die on. It's nice because I need something but nothing huge. I can't have eggs so most big breakfasts are a waste to me. I stayed in a Marriott for my wedding weekend. I'm gold status so I could get in the lounge. I had yogurt, a little fruit and either bacon or sausage. Quick and easy and just enough for me. Congratulations! Thank you!!

Yeah, I generally draw the line at HGIs and Courtyards. That's kind of why I have the bar restaurant rule. Well that and and if I want the option for a convenient drink and dinner without having to go out. Drinks? You BUY drinks in hotels? I always travel with my own booze supply. I don't drink a lot (my body would pay me back with a migraine in the wee hours of the morning) but I enjoy a nightcap. Next week I'm going to Iceland and plan to pick up some interesting scotch in Duty-Free in Boston before the flight.

I stayed at the Klimpton George Hotel several years ago when in DC. Lovely boutique hotel. I was there for a training class and they asked us to rate our hotel during the second day of class. I raved about the hotel and staff. My sister joined me over the weekend and they gave me the corporate rate for the extra two days and sent up a bottle of wine for us to share along with a note of thanks for the comments. Several other class members stayed at another hotel closer to the class site and were very unhappy. I think that was either a Marriott or Ritz Carlton. They paid more than I did for my much bigger and nicer room too.

I've stayed at the Monaco and Palomar in Philly (where we do out fancy suite nights!), Monaco in Baltimore, and Topaz in DC.

Depends on the reason I'm traveling. If I am traveling for work, I usually do the Holiday Inn (I've only been traveling to Montreal lately). Nice and clean, decent restaurant and bar onsite and lots of good restaurants very close.
If I'm taking a quick trip to the shore there is only one hotel that I will stay in. It is very nice, clean and the staff is great. I've looked at some and there is just no freaking way....
When I book a real vacation, I don't skimp. I want a gorgeous resort with all of the bells and whistles. Last time we even had a butler and when we walked out of our room we were right at the VIP pool and a quick swim to the swim up bar...then again, the butler had the room stocked with all top shelf drinks so I was never far without a drink! I'm cheap with everything else in life so I blow my money on vacations...it's what makes me happy. I'm slowly getting my BF up to speed on how to properly vacation...lol

I much prefer drinking at the bar with other people than sitting in my room drinking alone. It is more expensive but a much better experience for me...doesn't hurt that so far my company reimburses for everything...even my booze...which is usually more than my food bill

The night of the 13th I'll be staying in a Baymont because it's ten minutes from Grand Rapids airport and my flight is at 7 so I don't wish to wake up my hosts at an ungodly hour to catch my flight. Location was it for me plus shuttle to airport.

I also get to try out the local favorites.

Location was it for me plus shuttle to airport. There is that if I have an early morning flight. I'm not a morning person at all and traffic can be a crap shoot here. I prefer to be close by the airport in those cases.

Exactly. I can drink at home along too but that isn't the same as going out and meeting up with friends.

Location, cleanliness, and if possible, I choose a room based on access to more than a single exit in the event of an emergency.
Also, I prefer a hotel that is relatively serial-killer-, clown-, and weirdo-free.

C'mon, where's your sense of adventure!! I mean really! You need more excitement in your life. I lived and traveled in some scary adventurous and exciting places when I was working. I have checked all that off the bucket list already. My current goal is a life of peace and quiet and a conspicuous absence of gunfire (or loud noises of any kind). Also no weirdos. Or clowns.

It started by going over some famous tragic fires. My Prof stated he tried to make sure he never stayed on a floor higher than the 4th floor. Probably a good policy. I stayed way higher than that a few years prior to that class. The fire alarms went off so often that we started ignoring them. Probably not a good idea.

OK, this thread has reminded me of a funny experience from long ago.
I was in a 3-month leadership course that involved visiting various U.S. military bases for tours and briefings. Among the approximately 50 class participants were a mix of military officers and civilian managers and tech directors, many of whom were veterans (but not all). When we arrived at one of our travel destinations, we were too early to check in and get our rooms, so the hotel let us put our bags in a vacant room while we went to our first appointment. While we were stowing or bags, we suddenly heard gunfire from outside. All the military officers and former military folks hit the floor. Everyone else ran to the window to see what was going on (and to make themselves easy targets in the event that there was actual hostile action taking place outside).
It turned out the police academy was across the street and we were hearing the sounds from their partially enclosed firing range.

So don't book a room at the White House! I hear it's a real . . .

Excellent point.
However, I think it is unlikely that I would ever be invited as a guest at the White House (during this administration, anyway).

When we were planning our D.C. trip we were listing things to do and I suggested a White House tour. DS declined, which surprised me - he's usually up for any adventure and what kid doesn't want to see the White House? He said he wouldn't "feel welcome" there... that made me very sad. This is the first time in my memory (almost 50 years) that an administration has created a vibe that's so toxic a kid wouldn't want to be near it. There have been plenty of presidents I didn't agree with politically, but I can't think of any other president that created an "unwelcome" atmosphere for average citizens.

One was Rocky Raccoon. DD was about 4 at the time and petrified of all those characters. All weekend we managed to,steer clear of the characters. The last day We ent to get on the elevator. The door opened and in the elevator was Rocky Raccoon. DD took one look at him and ran screaming down the hall. DH and I were laughing too hard to go get her.

Just depends. I wouldn't have felt welcome during the last administration but I viewed it as taxpayers own it which we certainly pay through the nose for. We tried to tour it. No dice. Or tickets. I forget the excuse but it didn't sound legit. Sounded more like we were the wrong party affiliation as well as nobodies. DH was pissed but I wasn't a fan of going. DD had friends that put off joining the military. I'm not sure that improved this time around either.

I just stayed in 2 hotels on vacation. I want clean. I don't need a big room, because I don't spend much time in the room. I never go to the pool, but sometimes use a workout room. I like having breakfast included. It just makes it easier to wander down get breakfast and coffee and then go back to the room to get ready for the day. We stay at Hampton Inn's a lot.
I have been to some truly horrible hotels. We went to one Best Western that we call "the haunted one." Dimly lit old hotel with all the lights on motion sensors. So it lit up as you walked and you couldn't see very far in front or behind you. A balcony the you couldn't get to. The pool was green. We didn't stay the night at that one.

For the WH tour, now You have to go through your Congressman or Senator and it is hard to get into during the summer.
But we were able to do a tour of the Capital building and visited the Senate and the House. We also got to walk through the underground passageways which the members use to get from their offices and also saw a lot of other interesting stuff pointed out by the interns who took us on our tour.
