Do you have Nextdoor in your 'hood? What's your experience and opinion? Does this social media site build community for you?

Yes and no. Too whiney and you discover some people really are dumber than a bag of rocks.

Never heard of it before, but apparently there is one in my hood. The topics they show prior to registering don't seem whiney at all.

My hood is mostly about missing cats and some whining, but mostly cats.

Just never discuss politics because someone will say you are a Nazi and report you to their volunteer mods who want nothing but paid ads and puppy and kitty comments on their board. And never criticize a post because then you are warned! It makes this board look like it is running loose and fancy free

We have one. We have lived here 2 years and don't know anyone other than in the 3 houses on our cul de sac. Apparently we don't venture out onto the main road to meet people.
A lot of lost cats and dogs. And a rabid coyote thrown in for excitement. plenty of people offering to do yard work or minor repairs. And some people trying to get rid of wierd overpriced stuff.
We sold some old kids furniture not that it was overpriced, we were really just giving it away.

Yes, the members do love free stuff, and they will also post the fact if you are selling something for more than they think it is worth.

The one in my neighborhood is okay. There are lots of recommendation posts - people asking for recommendations for everything from piano teachers to lawn sprinkler companies to babysitters. Also stuff for sale is occasionally posted, or questions about our neighborhood pool.

Yes and no. Too whiney and you discover some people really are dumber than a bag of rocks. This....so much this. For instance, over the last year, we have had local votes for referendums that passed to supplement schools, EMS and to buy a new fire engine. In total, these new fees add almost another 10% to property tax. So imagine the surprise when the bills came out with these new levies on it. A group of people were planning on storming the tax assessor's office. It was pointed out to them that the property tax rates are the same, it is these special fees that are adding to their bill. They still stormed the office.

However, the best post I saw was one woman trying to sell her son's Fiat for what he owes on it.......$7000. The car is worth about $3000.

We don't have one. People I work with are always either complaining or laughing at the stupidity on theirs. Kinda glad I don't have it now.

Here, it's not just my immediate neighborhood but everyone in my zip code which encompasses something like 32 neighborhoods in part of my city and a neighboring suburban town.

There is a Next Door for where I live but I don't use it. The Facebook group, however, hoo boy! That's entertainment!

Thanks! We do have one and I joined. It looks like mostly people looking for recommendations for help with work and those selling stuff. Interesting.

Post in my neighborhood group (edited). "Hi I am 21 year old looking for work. I have experience in fast food and animal care. Let me know if there are opportunities." Comment "Do you have a resume". Response "No I don't"

Yes and no. Too whiney and you discover some people really are dumber than a bag of rocks. There is a lot of whining and often due to stupidity. Some of the stupider ones are the coyote sitings. Our community is surrounded by Open Space, of course we have wildlife roaming about.
I think the recycling of free stuff is helpful.
I love it when people alert us to the whale migrations; we can see the blowhole sprays from the house.

I just signed up. We live in a rural township that butts up against a fancy new development (McMansions on 2+ acre lots) so it is an interesting mix of neighbors. Not much chat happening, but I think there are only 200 or so homes in the township, about half of which are owned by elderly farmers, so I was a little surprised there was a site at all! I am a big fan of the "____ County Crime Watchers" page on Facebook for my home county. It's the best way to keep up with what all my high school classmates are doing these days.

Mine is like a lot of others have said:
Mostly it is people asking for recommendations for something - painters, housekeepers, landscapers, remodelers, babysitters, etc.
Lots of posts about missing cats.
Fox sightings - the people who get worked up and then the people who tell them to stop getting worked up, it's not rabid FFS.
The occasional doofus trying to sell some MLM crap. Seriously, I don't want any ugly leggings thanks.
People selling household goods, or posting free things. I dug up a bunch of daylilies from my yard, set them by the curb and posted them for free on Next Door. I was happy that they were taken and hopefully replanted somewhere.
Only rarely is there just random idiocy (aside from the folks who think any fox that waders by is out to get them).

So, despite its name, or perhaps in spite of it, this is largely an entertainment site? 😜

I joined about two months ago and just check my emails from time to time. Nothing to exciting going on on ours, landscaping stuff to give away, someone in need of a house cleaner or another for a golf partner.

Ours is quite large and *occasionally* helpful. When people start to whine too much, someone usually steps in and refers them to city services or the local councilperson's office. We have a few folks who are not afraid to tell whiners they are complaining in the wrong place. Our site also shuffles MLM folks off to one specific location on the site, and will remove sneak random MLM postings inside of other posts that have nothing to do with the sale of their products.
The ones I hate are: "I hear there's a cop car in the neighborhood. What's going on?" "Anybody else hear the helicopter last night?" "My neighbor said she saw a posting about a coyote sighting, but now he's gone. What happened?" - - - really people, don't you ever get out? No one sits breathlessly on the site and waits to answer your questions!
The helpful stuff includes postings about community events. Also local recommendations. I found a local knitting group on ND, and they are a great bunch of ladies I get sad about the lost cats and dogs

You're not usually so harsh, Tenn, so it's got to be REALLY bad for you to show your critical side. 😂 This popped up in my email box today from Nextdoor. It went to 34 neighborhoods in my zip code and a few outside the zip code: So I have to wonder who is missing. Marilyn Smith? A dog named Marilyn? If a dog, what is its name? What does Marilyn look like? Does she have two legs or four? Does it have wings? If four legs, what does it look like? Do you have a picture of the human Marilyn or the dog/cat/parakeet so your neighbors know what to look for. If you want help, how about some details.
