I am in DMV hell right now. Showed up and got number 324 and they were on number 266. It took 2 hours to get through all but the last part.....where I pay. I am still waiting to pay. If you had been at our DMV, you wouldn't have been able to post this because "no phones allowed". Does it make sense? No. Especially in era when some would be using their smart phones to pay. I finally broke down and bought a smart phone several weeks ago. Flew to Florida this past Sunday and returned today. Checked in for my flights via computer the day before the flights and had my boarding passes sent to my smart phone. Scanned the boarding pass bar code info on my smart phone to get thru TSA/security and the gate agent. No paper involved. Pretty convenient

You can't pay by debit card? Nope. Only place I've been in years I've run to get a money order because it was closer than home and I forgot my check book. What a pain in the butt!

Our DMV doesn't take credit or debit cards either. Another reason I pay online whenever possible.

Yeah I never go there except I have new drivers taking tests, etc. My own renewals, etc I do online, which is very convenient.

Our DMV has webcams at all locations so you can see how many people are there before you decide to go in. I was actually impressed last time I went. They had moved into a different building and were fully staffed. I got in, renewed my registration, had a lien holder removed and a new title issued, and took care of another issue. I was in and out within half an hour at the very most. That's never happened before.

Oh wait, I guess I went to have my new liscence pic taken, but I didn't need to pay for that and I was in and out in five minutes. It's hit or miss on lines there.

I audit Medicare. And Medicaid and other HHS divisions. Hell to the no on Medicare expansion. I will keep my Blue Cross Blue Shield.

Here the DMV is a hellhole or maybe just our local one.
If you buy or change anything plan on a bunch of visits, its horrible.
So far our medicare is going well.
We may have found the reason my insurance kept billing United a year and a half after hubby retired. He went to the doc and the info still had him on United and I had been on his health insurance as my primary. We are hoping now that has been deleted that they will stop running my bills through it for denials.

I have found that early Friday afternoons are an ok time to visit the DMV. Most customers choose other things to do with their Fridays than visit the DMV!

Canada is not "perfection". That being said, why is your government seemingly incapable of running ANYTHING? What the hell is going on down there? I don't know. But it's bad and it's pretty consistently bad across the board. It's a great big country with a huge, diverse population and little incentive for government to run things well. So it doesn't. Go into any government operated "service" and you'll receive barely competent service with a side order of contempt. And until you've experienced that here, you don't really understand how much some of us dread the idea of dealing with the government regarding anything critical. A little while ago someone posted about their difficulties with a tax issue. You posted that you simply called the local tax agency and your issue was fixed. Maybe that's why you have a very different outlook on what you want and trust your government to do. If we have an issue with the IRS, it's quite difficult, time consuming and unpleasant - and we all know and expect that. Same with the DMV, same with the post office (not technically a government agency but run much like one, receives government backing and operates under government regulations), same with local zoning departments, same with any government branch we deal with. The stories are endless... You rang? Update: it took a single phone call to fix my tax issue. It was, however, annoying getting through (which has more to do with California's specific budget issues *pensionscoughpensions*) and a pretty lame problem to have. Their excuse was that the withholding hadn't been processed yet. Whatever lady. The payments were submitted quarterly starting April 15 2016; last one would have been submitted Jan 15 2017 and we didn't file till late March 2017.

DMV is a crapshoot. It took 2-3 hours to get my new license, but less than 10 min to get the license plates. And as with most of these other things, it's state-specific.

The DMV in town is fairly easy to navigate because four clerks are on staff every day. Our DMV takes cash or check although there is an ATM in the hallway. Also, we do not receive a notice that our driver licenses need to be renewed, but we receive an annual notice via the mail for registration. The first time DH's license expired, he drove around for 3 months before he noticed it was out of date. Since our licenses are valid for six years, I have trouble remembering the renewal date.

My last dmv experience was a piece of cake. I was returning some library books, when I noticed a dmv to go van parked at the library. I walked right in, scribbled my info on a form, they took a pic, I paid and was on my way in a manner of minutes. My renewed drivers license arrived within a week.
