Thanks guys. It's sad, but he had a long happy life. He's not in pain. That helps.

We have a girbil that is on his last legs, he has a huge patch of cancer covering his tummy but is still eating and drinking, he must have had a stroke and leans to one side and tips over easy. He still gets around ok, sleeps a lot more but we just keep giving him treats and stuff and hope he passes peacefully Dog isn't old enough to worry about that stuff yet. I had a rat who had a brain tumour rupture. There was blood all over the living room when I came home form work on a Saturday night. He was paralyzed and oh so cold from blood loss.. He kept trying to crawl to me, using his front legs only. He was suffering so much. I called the Emergency Animal Hospital and was told they don't do rats....wait until Monday and take him to the Exotic Animal Hospital. I couldn't bear it one more minute, so I put him in a pillow case and ran over him with my car. It was really traumatic and I was in hysterics. He was my Good Boy.

I'm very sorry for your loss. One thing I have found with my animals, it is better to let them go, than to try treatment which just extends their discomfort or suffering. I had to learn this also. I spent a lot of money on my first cat to extend his life. I did end up putting him to sleep. I later realized I had kept him going for me, not for him. Have not made that mistake again.

I've already decided if I'm in that situation again, I will end things sooner rather than later. Contrarary to what a lot of people believe (or have experienced) I really didn't know "when it was time."

Every night he would want his catnip fix and while he was on the catnip high, he was my cat again. No, I didn't realize I should have let him go sooner.

He did have a great life. Got him as a kitten and he live 16 years. I should have let him go at 14 or 15.
He had recurring UTIs. They got more frequent as he aged. That is when I should have let him go--when they started being about 6 weeks apart.
He was addicted to catnip and would not go to bed without his dose of catnip!

There is always a lot of "what ifs" and no right and wrong answers
We love our pets and want to do what is right for them......that is all that matters.
Like Oped.. I knew my dog was dying and knew what we were facing. My last act of kindness was to ease her passing....because she was my dog and I loved her the best.

I'll just die when Jackson dies. He's my baby. I adore that dog. I've got a long time, but it will happen one day.

I've euthanized some pets, mostly mine but also one that wasn't mine b/c her owner was chicken shit and ran out of the vet's office, leaving me with the dog and the bill (elderly, cancer-ridden beagle, hated the dog b/c it bit me so many times but it deserved someone to hold her at her last moment!). I've held each of them except the one horse because I wasn't notified by the stable owner in time. I definitely waited too long on most, satisfying my needs before theirs. Each time we say no more, but then that face, that fur, that wiggle comes again. Probably won't go there again when current fur baby goes b/c it's damn near impossible and very expensive to find pet sitter so we can travel even for a weekend. I have zero regrets b/c the pain of loss will never equal the joy of life with them. Hugs to all who have made the incredibly tough choice.

You really did the horribly tough but absolutely right thing. It's tragic that some vets value one creature above another. We struggled to find quality care for our Guinea pig.

Smart. Oh, so very, scarily smart! One of the very few mammals that exhibit metacognition, besides humans, dolphins and some monkeys. They understand the concept of "I don't know".

A new study by researchers from the University of Georgia, just published in the journal Current Biology, shows that laboratory rats possess the ability to think about what they know or don't know. It's the first demonstration that any non-primate knows when it doesn't know something, and it could open the way to more in-depth studies about how animals, and humans, think. www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2007/03/070308121856.htm...and they smell nice, too. A clean rat smells like sandalwood. (One little episode of plague, and they're on everybody's sh!t list)
