The chicken at the center of the picture kind of reminds me of Big Bird. Also a dinosaur, or maybe I'm thinking of pictures I've seen of giant protobird things. Anyway, cool!
Looking forward to seeing pictures as the baby chickens grow up.

They don't stay cute fuzzballs long. Adolescent chickens are kind of ugly.

Nobody wanted to sit still enough tonight to get a clear shot in this low light.

MPL--when do your chicks move in with the hens? Our chicks from this year are full grown or close enough but dh doesn't want to move them to main coop until they're laying. They're all free range in the yard during the day, so the hens are eating the chick feed anyway, but the "chicks" aren't eating the layer feed at this point and he doesn't want them to until they really are laying. Dh has a tendency to over think things, and getting rid of the 2nd coop for the chicks will really help me with the rat problem (greatly reduced, but still fighting with them).

Dh has a tendency to over think things, and getting rid of the 2nd coop for the chicks will really help me with the rat problem (greatly reduced, but still fighting with them). I honestly can't remember, but it was definitely before laying. These were hatched out later in the year than the last times I did it, so I'm thinking maybe 3 months or so? Maybe less? Provided we're sure on which are roos at that point. They're going to be stuck in my aunt's barn until they get put with the hens, so I'd want to break them free ASAP. My hens aren't eating really anything right now. They'll pick at the layer feed a bit, but mostly they free range, so even if there was grower feed in the coop they'd probably let it sit.

Is the "over achiever" chick currently bigger than the others? Since they've gotten a head start? Are the previously sticky chicks doing better?
They sure are cute.

They sure are cute. I only ended up with one sticky chick (Q-Tip). He still looks like crap, but is healthy. I can't pick over achiever out anymore. However, that little black one with the white spot in his head in post #130 needs a name! He is a little shit! He's been trying to escape the pool since he was 3 days old. Nobody else knows or cares about the world "beyond the wall", but he is obsessed with it. He has now discovered the little seats in the corner that get him halfway there so it won't be long. He's also the most friendly. Most tolerate being held if you catch them, but he runs over and tries to get on my hand. He loves when I lift him up high so he case the joint and plan his escape. Today he sat on my lap for over a half hour in the yard just taking it all in.

Yesterday I got to take Eddy to the party (his owner had hurt her back and couldn't come herself, but she said I could come get him...yay!)

Yesterday I got to take Eddy to the party (his owner had hurt her back and couldn't come herself, but she said I could come get him...yay!) I feel like Eddy is the best dog to have. You can play with him and then send him back. The owner gets a tired puppy in return and you don't have to pay vet bills. Kinda wish I had that. I love tired puppies and Jackson could really use a place to run. He's pretty good with kids too.

MPL, seeing dannylion post brings this, not so random, thought to mind. It is based on her double yolk egg stories → have you ever had twin chicks emerge from one egg or does that never happen?

How are the feathers coming in and is it super hot there too?

Today was moving day. They are not staying in the pool at all anymore. I come home and they all scramble to jump back in before I see them.
