I had to laugh at the tabby chicken in the picture of the chickens in the yard. I am on chicken duty this weekend for DD. I will have to go and feed/water and collect the eggs. That tabby is no longer around. That was probably his last picture before he up and disappeared.

THEY'RE HATCHING!! I ran in for a bathroom break and found both cats in my bedroom and a lot of racket coming from my dresser. Two have their beaks through and two I see have dented shells. Super awful picture through the window.

Two now! Both the chipmunk color (golden with dark stripes on their backs). In the past the chipmunks have always been hens.
Some people say you're not supposed to open the incubator until the entire hatch is done, but I usually quick grab and remove because they're always playing soccer with the other eggs. I'll give these guys a couple more hours to dry first. Garage is finally ready for them. Just in the nick of time too!
Bad storm coming now though. Need to get all the stuff back in the garage and maybe do chores early.

This reminds me of the days when we were little - trying to get a peek of the chicks hatching, but not wanting to get too close to the hen who would peck us if we came too close. We got a breed that had tiny yellow chicks and they were so pretty.

Great now I know my exciting Saturday night plans. Egg watch. You can help me paint part of my house and prep the ceiling so I can cut in without the paint getting on the ceiling. I also need to tape part of DD's walls so we can the other wall purple. 😉

I moved the three to the brooder. They're crashed out under the heat lamp. Rough day hatching. Crazy to think that 20 days ago these were just eggs in my fridge.

The one in the middle I think I took out too early. He was still pretty wet and now his feathers are kind of plastered to him. The other two are dry. There are several more eggs that have little pip holes in them, but I have no idea how long it will be. That first guy went from pip hole to zipping out of his egg in just an hour or two, but I've seen them take nearly a day. Technically they shouldn't be out until tomorrow night. These are preemies.

Egg turner is removed, wet washcloth added for additional humidity and shells are marked for the air pocket, now it's getting closed up and left undisturbed until after the hatch. There was also a change of venue. I moved them from the kitchen into my bedroom. This was not some weird attachment parenting thing, but a safety precaution. I remembered how much noise and scratching around there is during a hatch and got really nervous about our two young cats that weren't around for the previous times we did this. I could totally see them knocking the bater right off the counter trying to get at the little birdies inside. I keep them locked out of my bedroom all the time, so they won't even be pissed off the door is shut. Bolded. Um, keep telling yourself that. Just kidding, thanks for sharing.
