I wonder if Trudeau, like Obama, realized that he faced considerable back blow from his own party if he tried such a thing? I'm guessing he did. Absolutely. And the party knew they'd be getting blowback from the voters. They still did it. They're not going to kill the golden goose. Some big liberal academic just wrote the definitive biography on Barrack Obama, and his conclusion is that Obama got into office, and like so many before him- liked the money. When you get right down to it, expecting government to reform itself is like trying to train a golden retriever to stop eating when its full. It's a nearly impossible task. That's why the budget grows every year, that's why government gets bigger every year. Washington, D.C. is a company town-- and it's always going to vote itself more and more goodies.

... Some big liberal academic just wrote the definitive biography on Barrack Obama, ... I struggle with the idea that a "definitive biography" has been written on a living 55 year old human being, particularly one who left the position of President of the United States less than 6 months ago. YMMV.

YMMV. Fair point. I don't plan on reading it- but the conclusion the guy draws is not wholly unreasonable: Barrack Obama is human. Like almost everyone else who gets to DC, regardless of ideological and moral purity, like the money and power and the money that power brings. The solution of course is simple: small government. A government that can't do much, can't sell much influence.

Kids this is how American government works. Money talks. And the Supreme Court made it worse a few years ago with their Citizen's United decision.
However, if you think the squeaky clean Clinton Foundation, which is investigated and observed to the nth degree, is an example of American political corruption, then look again. The corruption lies deepest where you can't see it, and where the party in power vests it. Currently that is the Republicans.
Regarding the problems with corruption and pay for play, let's address the real problems, shall we? We should not allow paid lobbyists within earshot of Congress, let alone on the floor of Congress. We should not allow corporate contributions. We should not allow PACs. I don't think we are going to address any of those though, do you?
I fully agree with all of the bolded... sadly the last one too. The only way to address all but the last one would be for Congress to ban, by law, all of their access... and that's never going to happen. They make too much money from lobbyists corporations & PACs.

U.S. Code Title 18, Part 1, Chapter 101, Section 2071, Paragraph b.
(a) Whoever willfully and unlawfully conceals, removes, mutilates, obliterates, or destroys, or attempts to do so, or, with intent to do so takes and carries away any record, proceeding, map, book, paper, document, or other thing, filed or deposited with any clerk or officer of any court of the United States, or in any public office, or with any judicial or public officer of the United States, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than three years, or both.
(b) Whoever, having the custody of any such record, proceeding, map, book, document, paper, or other thing, willfully and unlawfully conceals, removes, mutilates, obliterates, falsifies, or destroys the same, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than three years, or both; and shall forfeit his office and be disqualified from holding any office under the United States. As used in this subsection, the term “office” does not include the office held by any person as a retired officer of the Armed Forces of the United States. #readyforhillary
And James Comey is out of the way now...

Hence why make this statement at all? If you're going to chew him out, focus on convincing him to drop the hashtags. You'll have done all of YMAM--and indeed all of humanity--a great service.
