Since you said "van", my vote goes to none of it. The goal with a van is to get it as rusty and creepy as possible. Unless it is in fact a lame-wad minivan, in which case you should have specified. Lame-wad minivan. It is getting some rust though...but not creepy yet. Just dropped it off this morning. They're replacing the sway bar, the power steering pump, and the timing belt with cam seals and crank shaft seal. God I hope it gives me another year.

The only ones that can be creepy are the original 80's Caravans, Astros, and Aerostars that have bead-curtains in the windows. What goes on behind those bead-curtains? No one knows!

Tell him to nickname it "The Shaggin' Wagon". That's what my wife called the Ford Taurus stay-wag that she drove in HS / college. I don't want to know.

Probably not likely, but hard to say. It came on sudden and I took it into a mechanic last Winter and he told me whoever changed my oil last stripped the hole in the oil pan and the bolt wasn't tight. He told me that because it was an aluminum pan it was probably f**ed, and would need to be replaced. Took it back to dealership and they spent forever trying to get the bolt out and replaced with a bigger one (which first mechanic said you couldn't do with aluminum pans). My HOPE is they just have to replace the pan and it's all better and it's not a bunch of seals. Not that a pan is a cheap fix... However, the note from the mechanic on the multi point check said "multiple engine oil leaks". I don't know if that's just because he couldn't tell where it was coming from and there was a lot of oil or if he could really see spots. holy crap. they must not have anyone working there who's ever even had a beer with a machinist. you can, 99% of the time, absolutely thread in a new bigger nut for the oil drain, or worse case, change the pan (though that can be a PITA depending on what has to be unhooked to wrestle it in/out. We're past that fix, thankfully no pan replacement because that was over $300. But...still leaking, so now they're replacing some seals.

I had a music student who drove to lessons in his parent's minivan. He also played in church with me a few times...and would carry the hymnal around in full view while entering/exiting said minivan.. I joked with another family that that kid was never getting a girlfriend...

alwaysbeoptimizing - I'd still throw money at the Tahoe. I see them on Craigslist with over 200K all the time. That's kind of why I'm throwing more at the Odyssey and mine is worth maybe 4K! I also don't mind driving an older vehicle. Last night I misjudged hooking up the trailer and put a ding in the hatch. Oh well. It just adds character. If it was a 35K new van I would have been crying and paying the deductible to fix it. Our state taxes newer cars pretty badly too, but anything over 10 years old is just $35/year. I was paying $400/year on my new truck back in the day.

My DS was gifted my 2002 Ford Explorer Truck (180k miles) for college graduation. He does house inspections 1-2 days every week so will be putting some miles on it. I am praying that it lasts him 12 months until he gets his appraiser license and doubles his salary.
Rode with him in it last week and the shocks are terrible. He is looking for apartments and wants to avoid speed bumps. Also, the AC works about half the time (thermostat and some other thing need fixing for $600). I think he will have to do the shocks and skip the AC. Vehicle is currently registered in Alabama where there is no inspection, and he is moving to metro Atlanta, hopefully vehicle will pass emissions inspection or we may leave it registered here.
And then today he calls me up and said there is smoke coming out from behind the tire. After a few panicked moments, he realized the parking brake was on. So I guess that is now shot, another thing we won't have fixed.

Omg. Van is still in the shop because they couldn't finish in one day so they loaned me a 2017 Rav4 Hybrid with like 800 miles on it. I'm never taking it back. This is the vehicle I've wanted for a long time just the wrong color.
Carrot says, "People aren't going to think we're poor anymore!" ROFL. I told him if we bought this we WOULD be!

We're past that fix, thankfully no pan replacement because that was over $300. But...still leaking, so now they're replacing some seals. good for you! my car needs a few things and i'm torn about how much to put in it. 2007 Tahoe with 150K on it. still in pretty good shape, but it's getting to an age where I have to decide how much to "keep it up and nice" vs just functional. I dented the front bumper, could pop it out and touch the paint up myself, or I could pay $500 to have it done super nice. will probably just do my OK fix. rear shocks and air pump have gone out. still rides OK, but the warning is annoying and I do tow the camper with it. will probably fix it myself (3 hours and $600). I just hate to money in as we're trying to save money for the house and also, not sure how much to put into a 10 year old truck worth 12K -15K or so. I think i'm going to fix everything this round, as I've got to run this for a couple of years at least before I can justify another car. Also, should put $1,000 in new tires on it, and fix an annoying exhaust leak (maybe $20, maybe a few hundred) I know I should just do all this, and get it detailed, because I'd love my car again if it was all fixed. Plus our county just passed some hellish taxes on newer cars, so I might keep this one another 10 years instead of trading it in 2-3 years. Fix the exhaust leak. Exhaust leaking into the passenger compartment would be a serious safety hazard. Skip the detail. Just jack the car up, open the doors and take garden hose to it. Used to use that technique to clean the inside of school buses. Everything washed out the open emergency exit door.

Two years and 30K miles later and the van is still going strong! I thought of this thread today, because I'm going to be taking it in soon to get some stuff done from the list. ROFL
