It's a scam at my work.
They make u take ur computer home the day before a potential storm so that instead of getting the day off for bad weather they make u work from home.
First world problems
Also I need some motivation. Help?

I'd be happy to work from home although a day off would be even better. I thought this was going to be working at home is a scam, because people I work with do so little when they work from home...

I'm working at home but I won't get as much done. My internet at home is fine, we have multiple people streaming at the same time and it never messes up. Going through VPN really slows my computer down. If I'm in the office creation of PDFs from Office documents is instant. At home it can take a minute or two. It all adds up over the course of a day.

It is very rare for corporate America to close. Normally we are told if you can't make it in that you can work from home. But if you can't work from home you must use vacation. I've been at my current company for 5.5 years and this is the second time they closed. In that same time frame I have worked from home when I thought the roads were too bad for me to drive.

Would you prefer to take a PTO day? I welcome working from home over attempting the trek to the office. We have the option to work from home or take a PTO day if you prefer. If the building were to close early (because some people are close enough to make it in, so we always try to remain open) then I log off for the day and apply the building closed time code in place of PTO. Works for me!
Logging in has been so much better since we switched from RSA tokens to Duo!

I've got some ADD or ADHD, so usually I put netflix on for background noise (helps me focus), make a cup of a hot beverage (coffee, cocoa,) curl up under a quilt and get to work.
I'm often more productive at home than I am in the office.
For some reason, watching netflix at work while working at work doesn't really sound like a good idea.
Especially when I was going through shows like the Tudors.

My company never closed. Even if a state of emergency was declared and people were asked to stay off the roads. We were not in a critical business or anything like that. They wanted to keep overhead costs down. You had to take vacation.

I always preferred to work from home when I had a lot to do because I had fewer interruptions. The last job, though, required certain documents be printed and they never fixed the remote printing app. So I'd do all my work and then spend the first hour back in the office just printing stuff out. <img src="http://images.proboards.com/new/grin.png" alt=" " text=" "><br><br>Hey! If they wanted to pay me to sit around and pull up docs to print them out, who was I to complain?<br>

He says they never close, even when they tell govt workers not to go in to work. Seems like they are increasing the chance of auto wrecks. They don't have claims dept there. Maybe they are in there trying to figure out how to raise everyone's rates.

Fortunately I have a job that I can do from home. Some of our union clerks don't so it really puts them in a bind.

The federal agency where I worked was not included in the Denver area announcement "all federal agencies are closed today".
You either showed up or took vacation. I only had to use vacation once in 25 years.

Well, my office closes at least 1 - 2 times a year for snow. People with laptops are expected to work from home, everyone else gets a free day off without having to use up PTO.

None of the community colleges or universities close during bad weather. Creighton and UNMC have closed exactly ONCE. The only reason they closed is because the snow storm was so bad the interstate, Dodge and the South Omaha bridge were all shut down. Unless you lived in downtown Omaha and could travel by sled dog nobody was going to be coming in. You couldn't drive even if you wanted to. We employees can use our best judgement and use vacation time if we have it during bad weather. UNMC closed early several times when I first started here. I'd drive all the way here only to have them close at noon during the worst part of the storm. Why not just make the announcement in the morning?

I like working from home, and my work allows me to do it for whatever reason. That's the positive!
What really sucks is getting a really generous amount of "sick days" but never being able to use them because there is no else to do your work. So you just come back to 2 days work!
And since, I'm exempt, no one cares about how many hours I work or don't work as long as everything gets done!

I love taking vacations but dread walking into a nightmare when I get back. I do love my salary but I'm getting to the point wehre I just want a job where I clock in and clock out....grass is always greener!

I live in Wisconsin. Even our schools rarely shut down. The corporations all know we all have AWD vehicles, so they make us come in to work. If they give us the day off, we will be out and about driving around on our "day off" even if we have 2 feet of snow.
I worked through the last snow storm we had. We got 9-12". I had work to do, so I kept working.
