That's pretty cool! And, if we are talking about August, we have a fair chance of having clear skies (unlike January where the sun becomes some long forgotten memory) I am thinking about an eclipse trip to Eastern Wyoming! To stay away from the crowds, I was thinking Just South of Jay Em, Wyoming, East or West Highway 85 on Rd 12 or Rd 22. Aug 21 2017 At 11:48 MDT. It will last 2 minutes 30 seconds. Want to joint my little party,, or maybe you have a better idea! Every one is invited! Jay Em? You certainly do want to find a place with few people. Well, Jay Em has a population of ..........16... It does , however have a Post Office....But remember to bring your own water bottle...services there are , shall we say, slim to none.

That will be in the middle of the eclipse, I will bring water and everything else, best yet no crowds. This is fine, it has been a long time since I up thru that part of the country, I will make a trip of it! Do you think that you might make that trip to see the eclipse?

you do realize that there are hundreds, if not thousands, of people planning to be at every spot that a road of any size bisects the Eclipse path

Devils Tower in Wyoming would have been a good meet up for you two. Alas, only 94.86% obscuration.

Highway 85 runs north/south. Jay Em is between Lusk Wyoming and Lingle Wyoming. Is Rd 12 or Rd 22 running off Us Highway 85? Those would be county roads maybe? Devils Tower is approx. 70 miles north -west of me. Jay-Em is about 101 miles south of me. The thing will be the weather forcast...clear or overcast? However August "usually" is clearer EXCEPT for the afternoon thunderstorm. There is also a good 171 miles between Jay Em and Devils tower so finding a spot with clearer skies is possible.

It would take a few of them to alter the landscape around here. My county is 1/3 larger that Rhode Island with a grand total of 2.2 people per square mile. According to Game And Fish we have approx. 7500 humans and 23,000 deer. Normally the only time Highway 85 gets really busy is in August when a few hundred thousand Harley Davidsons are enroute to the Sturgis Rally in South Dakota. Anyway, it would be fun to coordinate to watch the eclipse.

Picture Hulett Wyoming during the Sturgis Rally on their Wednesday "Ham And Jam" event. Hulett has a population of about 450 which jumps to whatever when 40-60,000 Harley's with their riders arrive on that date. It can take around 4 hours to get from one end of town to the other if you happen to be in, say a pickup truck with a camper.....however, most folks are watching other things (ahem'''scenery) than an eclipse.......

The solar eclipse is now 15 days away so I'm going to resurrect this thread. I'll add four things - 1) First, make sure you have ISO certified eclipse glasses to view the solar eclipse. This is especially important for children! Check out The Wirecutter's review - The Best Solar Eclipse Glasses and Filters. 2) Buzzfeed News had an article recently about Hertz - People Are Furious That Hertz Is Canceling Car Reservations For The Eclipse. Apparently Hertz overbooked their cars and so they are robo-calling folks to tell them that their reservations have been canceled. Needless to say, some people have had to completely cancel their trips. The article also tells that Hertz has been jacking up the price of rentals for that time period. 3) Washington Post had an interesting article entitled Rural towns in the eclipse’s path are bracing for a flood of smartphone-toting visitors. It's about the fact that the swarm of visitors arriving in these rural areas will overload the cell network. The article talks about what cell companies are doing (temporary cell sites) to handle this surge in traffic. 4) If you're driving to the eclipse, make sure you use an app like Google Maps to keep track of traffic. I imagine that on the day of the eclipse some roads are going to be a nightmare. An accident three miles down the road can hold up traffic and totally ruin your plans.

If it's raining in Oregon I'm going to be pissed!! If it is cloudy and raining in Oregon, then it will be night time cloudy and raining in Oregon during the eclipse. You will still get some of the effects of the eclipse.

Whatever happened to smoked glass? Smoked glass is not safe. You can use number 14 welder's glass. But ISO certified glasses can be really cheap. Considering the dire consequences of using anything inadequate, I'll stick with the glasses.

My SIL lives in Jackson Hole and she's pissed I'm not coming to her viewing party. I'll be pissed too if the weather in Oregon sucks.

If you have not bought your viewing instruments (glasses, cards, and other ISO/CE certified items), you better hurry. Last month, I bought a pack of ten ISO/CE certified viewing cards for $14 and change on Amazon. I was going to reccommend those cards here ladt night but on Amazon they were now out of stock.
I noticed some company was still selling them in packs of five but the price for that pack of five was now $55. So prices are going up.

Looks like both Salem OR and Jackson Hole will get it. They are predicting that Salem OR could grow by 100,000+ people for that weekend. I have read that Oregon could get in excess of 500,000 people for those 3 days. We are being told to expect gridlock and they are treating it the same as a natural disaster. All hospital personnel are expected to work and if necessary bring a bag with them to stay at the hospital. Weigh stations along the freeway are being shutdown so they can stage emergency vehicles there. DD's due date is August 20th. The doctor will do a check next Friday but they are considering inducing her because of traffic concerns and fears of the hospital being over crowded. In her birthing class every week they were telling them that if they are due around that time they will probably need to take an ambulance to be able to reach the hospital. There is also a great deal of concern about forest fires. We are in an extreme fire danger situation and you get a bunch of people deciding to go out to the forest and camp and building campfires, recipe for disaster. The forest service is also concerned with people who have called in thinking they will climb up to the top of some of the peaks in the cascades without realizing that these are technical climbs that require certain equipment and skills. It is not an afternoon stroll to the top of Mt Jefferson. Right now there is a major fire in the Jefferson wilderness area so hopefully that will keep some people out.

That Red Lion is charging me over $200 for my last night in Salem because of that eclipse. Because my aunt and uncle live in BFE and I have to catch my plane at 6 am
