Seems a code associated with Russian hacking is found on

laptop that is aligned somehow with a vermont electric utility..

Not being that technically up on these things , it could be nothing or it could be something that shouldn't be there..possible left over from a practice attempt to see if a unfriendly could disrupt ..

Why small Vermont..? possible..this is me now , just thinking aloud..pick a smaller, isolated utility..probably never be noticed..just saying.

Must be somewhat seriouse as it seems the hacked computer was isolated.

I am also thinking..before our new knee jerk president elect goes  out with inane tweets poo pooing this latest...possible find out more..talk to his soon exclusive information gurus..Just possible might even say something nice about our current Potus regarding his actions with the Russians over their latest attacks and meddling.

"WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A code associated with the Russian hacking operation dubbed Grizzly Steppe by the Obama administration has been detected on a laptop associated with a Vermont electric utility but not connected to the grid, the utility said on Friday.

"We took immediate action to isolate the laptop and alerted federal officials of this finding," the Burlington Electric Department said in a statement.

"Our team is working with federal officials to trace this malware and prevent any other attempts to infiltrate utility systems. We have briefed state officials and will support the investigation fully."

The Department of Homeland Security alerted utilities on Thursday night about the malware code used in Grizzly Steppe, the Burlington Electric Department said.

"We acted quickly to scan all computers in our system for the malware signature. We detected the malware in a single Burlington Electric Department laptop not connected to our organization’s grid systems," it said.

I referenced a television show making fun of geeks hacking into their computers.
Geeks love gadgets to operate their appliances thermostats and lights.
They (I assume) hacked their own computer systems and not the utilities.....
But the point is we have a lot more than just Russian hackers to worry about.

Most likely because the electrical grid in this country is both highly computerized and highly interconnected.  I would guess that if one could crash even a small utility it could spread to a much larger area, and large system outages could have a devastating effect on many areas of life here.

I don't know if there is a plan or not.  I would guess though that if there WERE a plan to disrupt the U.S. that crashing the electrical grid would do a lot of damage in a lot of areas.  Additionally, I would guess both that it would probably be easier to hack and crash a small utility than a large one, and that crashing even a small one could have a cascading effect on others connected to it, including much or most of the Northeast such as Washington, D.C., New York, Boston, and Philadelphia.
