In the beginning was the chimp and the chimp sought status. The nature of a chimp's existence is to spend its life seeking, achieving and sustaining its status within a group, the higher the status the more sex and food it gets. Leap forward 6 or 7 million years and humans like their ancestors shared the same gene driven instinct to seek, achieve and sustain status, and the rewards were not dissimilar. However the big game changer was self awareness and in particular the awareness of our own mortality, this was the ultimate threat to our status and it had to be tackled by our new consciousness. The psychological bed fellow of status is significance and death diminished our status and significance. Now our genes are stubborn and they drive our minds,so in order to achieve a status in this life and a significance that would survive death we needed an eternal meaning and purpose to our existence. Along came the Jews with a mix of Sumerian and Egyptian theism and their God provided purpose and meaning, our chimp status seeking had evolved into supernatural significance. Denying death was not sufficient if death robbed us of our status and significance. Human evolution is a truly remarkable epic and i am part of the story,it gives my life purpose and meaning.....and significance of course.
