Can anyone give me some ideas on a Hawaii vacation. I would love to do a 7 day cruise but if that price is out of my range are there any ideas on good hotels and things to do to get a good "Hawaii" experience.

Norwegian is one of the only cruise ships that only stays in the Hawaiian islands. Apparently there's some pretty strict rules to follow to be able to do that?

That is the one I am looking at. I love the cruise ship idea because I don't have to worry about what part of town a hotel is in or where to eat. And I love cruises. But I am trying to convince myself to spend that much money.

Every time I've been to Hawaii I have flown with a group, and it's always been to Honolulu. I would love to see other islands but I don't think that's in my near future.
A cruise would be great and I hope you can see your way to go. Start planning now and put Hawaii funds away to pay for it. I understand from others it's something you won't forget.
Have a great time.

Maui is my favorite Island. You can fly there directly from many west coast cities. Snorkel, go to the beach, visit (or bike down) the volcano and take a whale watching cruise.

Oahu is where all the tourist stuff is, but Honolulu is swarming with people and traffic and just general craziness. If you want a relaxing lay around on the beach vacation, go to Maui or Kauai. I don't have any recommendations on accommodations since I always stay with family or at the AFB cabins, but a cruise sounds like a nice way to see the islands.

Many, many years ago (1978?), I went to Hawaii for a week's vacation. Never having been before, I and my friends stayed at the Hilton Hawaiian Village in Honolulu. Nice complex. If you want to play it safe for your first time in Hawaii and Honolulu, you might look into HHV. It has though been 37 years since I was there so I cannot speak for it in recent times.

Why don't you look at packages? I know that Costco has them, and when we went, we got out Maui/Kauai/Big Island part of the tour through AAA, and it was very reasonable. We had a research meeting in Honolulu, so that part of the tour wasn't included as we just stayed on extra days at the convention hotel.
Our trip included flights between the islands, condos and car rentals.

The only island I haven't seen in Maui. It's on my list.

I've done the big island and Kauai. Hiking, snorkeling, zip lining, splashing around on the beach... it's all there. I think a cruise is not necessary for Hawaii unless you want like 1 island a day type thing. Spend a week on each island to get the real feel of each one IMO. Skip Oahu unless you want the super upscale version of Hawaii.

Depends on if you want a tour or a vacation. I would never do a cruise because, when I go there, I simply want to veg and do a little diving. At most if I had 10 days i would do no more than 2 islands. Each are very different and if you want some nightlife, I would do Maui and either Kauai or the Big Island. Westin Kaanapali is kind of in the middle of the busy beach on Maui. You can't beat the Mauna Kea on the Big Island. Alot depends on the time of year you want to go and what your budget is. I would bypass Oahu unless you have an interest in the military memorials - like the Arizona and Punch Bowl. If you just choose a single island and pick Maui, you can always do a day trip sail tour to Lanai.

I like Oahu better than Maui or Molokai ~ but all islands have their charms.
The last four times we went to Oahu, we stayed at the military resort which is right next to the Hilton Hawaiian Village (which has awesome amenities and restaurants) Maui was great for whale watching ~ which is why we went in January one year. On Oahu, you can totally get by without renting a car ... and most hotels will charge you a fortune to actually park a rental car. There are some nifty island tours that can be fun. And we loved watching the turtles on the north shore. Some of the Hawaiian cultural museums are just amazing, too.
I prefer the weather in December and January ... but that can be a pricey season.

That is the one I am looking at. I love the cruise ship idea because I don't have to worry about what part of town a hotel is in or where to eat. And I love cruises. But I am trying to convince myself to spend that much money. I did the NCL Hawaii cruise back in 2007 for my parents 40th wedding anniversary. When the family decided they wanted to go to Hawaii I was the one who priced everything out. I am not sure what the cost of the cruise is these days but back then the cruise was the most economical route IMO. We definitely wanted to visit more than just one island so once we factored in hotels, travel between islands, food, etc. the cruise seemed to be the most logical and economical way to get the most out of our trip. From what I remember the hotel alone for a week was going to be almost as much as the cruise. We had a WONDERFUL time! I would actually love to take that cruise again and I am not a huge cruise person. The big island and Maui were my favorites. I really would love to spend a week on the big island and a week in Maui but that seemed costly and the family wanted to do just a week long trip. Maybe at some point I will be able to do that.
