I believe it is called "Catfish"...This dude thought he was "dating" Katy Perry for a few years.....http://www.msn.com/en-us/music/celebrity/katy-perry-%e2%80%98my-heart-goes-out%e2%80%99-to-%e2%80%98catfish%e2%80%99-victim/ar-BBw1NjM?li=BBnb7Kz&ocid=HPCOMMDHP15
At work we had a Soldier deploy and as a joke they left a card board cut out of themselves behind so we wouldn't "forget" them.....we gave that thing a FB page and posted wacky photos with it and started "friending" people making it obvious (we thought) what it was ("Flat" was the first name and last name was Soldier's last name)....the description / about sections said "I am a cardboard cutout...."
Low and behold we had to shut it down for too many dudes hitting on her/ posting inappropriate stuff as if she was real.........
I guess people are even more stupid then I thought......

That didn't come out right. I didn't mean to insult military people but to imply that you have to be smart enough to be in the military.

The reason the Nigerian prince schemes and the like are still around is because a certain percentage of the population is stupid/naïve enough to fall for them.

I wonder how many of the victims of these scams are senior citizens. I wouldn't say senior citizens who are victims are stupid but I would agree they are naive through no fault of their own. Seniors are less inclined to be connected to social media sites and the like where warnings are passed along on these scams. One scam is to find seniors on social sites and if they mention a grandchild's name, the scammers will call the senior pretending they are the grandchild and in trouble of some sort (car breakdown, arrested out of state, even kidnapped) and money needs to be forward to get them out of that trouble. We need to make sure seniors are kept informed not to give out credit card numbers or SSN over the phone, go to Western Union at someone's direction to pay some bogus bill,, or even click on an email message from people they don't know or have any current business relations and reply with personal information. Of course that information is good to pass along to any person of any age.

She hasn't done anything like this, but wanted to enforce that "times have changed". She said the same thing you said. Older people aren't stupid. She says she just grew up in a time people didn't do this to one another. I jokingly said that not many scams were run through Pony Express.
I just now regained consciousness.

The victims are given just moments to make a decision as to comply with the demand or not. Often times there is no time to call other family members to conirm the where abouts of their children and grandchildren.

Part of the problem, too, is seniors are more easily confused. If someone is leaning into dementia, unfortunately, there are people who have no problems taking advantage of them. I know the laws in my state aren't nearly tough enough for stealing from or swindling the seniors.

I'm dating a Nigerian Prince! Maybe you know him? It sounds like you've heard of him, at least! I'll tell him you said hello. I'm sure he'll be glad to know people are thinking about him. Have a great day!
