So, if you're in an accident, breaking your pelvis and fracturing your skull, or have a stroke requiring months of hospitalization and rehab, you can pay for it out of pocket? Or, would your plan be to stiff the hospital or start a Go Fund Me account? It's not about wanting to 'stiff' hospitals though. It's about not being able to afford 6 times the amount of the fine over the course of a year. A fine that's only collectible, by the way, but deducting it from a person's tax refund. No refunds for me!

It's possible to adjust withholding to eliminate the refund due back from Uncle Sam. In your astuteness I'm sure you have looked into that, but I discovered along the way that most Americans are unaware of that possibility. Well... there's "refund" and there's "refund including payable credits". I've got my W-2 pretty close to ZERO for taxes withheld over the year. So it's the credits that they would be taking the fine out of. And that's something I can't "adjust" so they don't have a chance at it.

bear with me a bit..it has been a while..but this topic seemed to catch me. i am not going to tell someone how to spend their dollers..that would be persumptiose of me..[sorry about the spelling] but i am just back from having a major medical problem..i grant u that being a senior i am lucky to have coverage younger folks do not have through the government but still..here is some of the charges that have been adressed to me..
i had a stroke..my first week..actually five days..general hospital..they charged me $450,000..of course they never expected to be paid that...medicare paid a fraction of that and my suppliment the difference but without the suppliment the hospital would have been after me for big bucks.
i then was in a top beginning rehab set up for three weeks to get me acclimated and then they through me out and i went into rehab place for eight weeks,,,again no idea the cost but trust me it was high..thankfully covered... meantime i had my place basically gutted and made friendly for my condition...this is all on me but kids said they don't need my $..thank the lord..but i also had been paying through the nose for a disability policy,,i was a smoker at time took it out and older..after qualifying it will pay me a amount for in house care by caregiver..i do need that..for a period of so many years...plus my doctor visits..two main ones and some not seen regularly but all are costly...
i am doing fine and am lucky to have good coverage..on disbility ..the earlier one get covered age wise , cheaper it is...and all this coverage is what is allowing me to live good life with not to many problems..obama care is coverage that while there may be some problems with, over all gives so many important coverage. i remember that before it came into play medical costs were climbing out od site..never saw gop do anything but say no..not one repub crossed the aisle, not one...so till they come up ith a better plan..obama did just fine in my book..has to be tweaked..yes...if gop had worked with dems would it have been better program..yes..but they didn't...and trust me..to not have insurance..even when young..so to opt out of coverage..just not smart...

A better question to ask is why people that can afford it won't buy health insurance....

Because in their 20s people think they are unbreakable, cannot be defeated by anything and are also the smartest too! Been there, done that

Didn't want to, and didn't need it. I went without insurance from 2007-2012 or so. Wouldn't be afraid to do it now.

Great to see you back, have always enjoyed reading your posts. Your old account is still listed and the link to your dragon is there. I bet one of the mods, like Jaguar , aka Sugi, could help you get it as your avatar for your new account. Good luck!

If young adults are on their parents insurance to age 26, then that doesnt' leave a lot of young adults to fund the Ponzi Scheme.

My "fine" would be much less than two months premium. So, if you're in an accident, breaking your pelvis and fracturing your skull, or have a stroke requiring months of hospitalization and rehab, you can pay for it out of pocket? Or, would your plan be to stiff the hospital or start a Go Fund Me account? Obama's plan is stiffing the hospitals. In case you aren't paying attention premiums have risen under Obama and haven't panned out in the least to his litany of lies about ACA. So, yeah, the hospitals are the ones getting stiffed thanks to Obama. Or Pelosi, who had to pass the bill before actually reading it.

An older friend of mine (retired math professor) sits on the board of directors for our regional hospital. (Currently 235 beds and shrinking) They are in trouble financially that is only getting worse and service/capability is being reduced on a quarterly basis. Last winter they had over 100 people waiting in the halls for admission during the height of flu season one day. It looked like one of those scenes in a movie about a third world country during a crisis.
