The 2012 chart is also interesting:
So much for Obama being an ultra-liberal or communist. Of course, some of us knew that. (They do have him a bit further out on both axes than I would have put him.) Striking just how close he is rated to the GOP candidates. every US president in post-WW2 history is in the upper right hand quadrant. most nation states (when subjected to this test) are also in that quadrant. and that kinda makes sense. speaking for myself, i am in the lower left hand quadrant. that is why i have not much good to say about nations, or presidents. They have Obama at roughly +6, +6 on the graph. I would have guessed him closer to +3, +3 or +3, +4. Moderate Republican, if there still existed such a thing.
I'm lower left as well, but that shouldn't be much of a surprise to you.

I wonder if this will work...? my results from dj's link, pretty much exactly where I thought I'd be. this was an interesting find, as I started clicking some links to the left of the page.... oh, and the accompanying text - linkchiver- we are almost exactly in the same spot, which based on our historical interactions seems spot on to me. Me too. Pretty much exactly. I expected to be a little more right.

Up two rows and right two rows and I'm sittin' right there. Tallguy, dj, chiver ... only degrees apart, really, and pretty good company from my point of view.

LOL! Yeah, I'd probably get the same sort of comments from some. I imagine it bothers you just about as much as it bothers me. I've been on the planet long enough to know what's important to me and what isn't, and where I'd like to see this country heading. It's a big, ol' world with lots of folks in it. I'm not an island and neither is anyone else. If we, as the human race, aren't willing to care enough about one another rather than just ourselves, I guess we deserve whatever we get (like Trump). I sure don't want to go to my grave having to admit to being any part of that!

This, though, is amusing to me. If dj is correct (and I have little doubt that he is) that every president since WWII and most nation-states are upper-right on the graph, it sets up an interesting question. Most anti-government, can't-do-anything-right posters here would ALSO show up as upper-right. Shouldn't WE be the ones who are more stridently anti-government here?

Gotta admit, the same question crossed my mind. Unfortunately, it got mired in the mud I knew would be thrown at the very mention of the concept and sank like a stone.

this is probably what Noam Chomsky calls "bounding the debate".
the example he uses is the phrase "liberal media". if you keep repeating that phrase enough, until everyone believes it, EVEN THE MEDIA, then you have effectively bounded the debate to ONLY conservative topics, biasing the media conservative. nobody dares step over the line into liberal territory (with rare exceptions, like the lowly MSNBC) without fear of horrific backlash and being discredited for being "communist", or "radical" (note: i can give examples of this, if you want).
the same thing is probably happening in politics in general, but i hadn't really considered it before today.
the next question becomes: who does that benefit? and that is a very interesting question, right? but it has an answer: those that already govern.

You are 43% conservative and 57% liberal, you are Left-of-Center!
Your political beliefs fall on the left side of the spectrum: you believe in strengthening gun control, supporting workers' rights, as well as women and minorities. You do not blindly support the military, and may even believe the budget to be bloated. While not an all-out socialist, you do believe the government should take a role in providing a safety net for its citizens. We are the greatest country in the world, after all.
Generally young, well-educated and financially comfortable, the Next Generation Left have very liberal attitudes on many issues, including homosexuality, abortion, the environment and foreign policy. While overall supportive of an activist government, most are wary of expanding the social safety net. Most also have relatively positive views of Wall Street’s impact on the economy. While most affiliate with the Democratic Party or lean Democratic, few consider themselves strong Democrats.

Now that I read through my graph looked pretty much like chivers I think...

I'm conservative enough to be selfish with my money and liberal enough to let you screw any consenting adult you want to.

Absolutely! And you can smoke weed before, during, or afterwards. Yes, I know the joke and No, I don't smoke afterwards.
