I haven't but haven't taken a cab in almost 50 years either. My niece's husband drives for them but I don't know much about them. Do you need a smart phone? I don't have a smart phone, I do have a tablet and dumb phone. Might be a good idea for when I am too old to drive and don't want to take the bus. Could I take a bus grocery shopping then have uber bring me home? Absolutely. I walk to meet DS in the daytime and uber back after dark.

Have used them multiple times, and service is always good.
I set it up for my parents once when they needed a ride home and I had some obligation and couldn't take them, and they loved it! They now both have Uber on their smart phones.

Uber?

Uber and Lyft are great ideas, and people I know who use them seem to think very highly of them.
I have one friend who drives for Uber and I believe that Uber screws its drivers big time. The Uber website makes it very clear that passengers don't have to tip. Yet drivers downrate passengers for not tipping. The insurance coverage gap (being covered by neither your nor Uber's insurance during the time between accepting the rider and having the rider in your car) is also an issue. I think insurance companies are seeing an increase in people using paid ride-sharing services to make extra money so they are starting to consider this.
I've thought about driving for the service. I'd probably only do it during high volume/surge times. If I drive later on Saturday night, I can probably get decent fares in a concentrated area.

I've heard it can be really difficult to keep good driver ratings on uber... And that while they originally offer good rates to drivers, they don't always stay that way. It will be interesting seeing how it goes.

Most young people don't carry cash. You're actually not supposed to tip but of course, like everything else, drivers now are expecting it. I don't use it enough to probably rate one way or the other. If someone doesn't want to pick me up, someone else will.

That's the thing. The drivers are punishing the riders for following directions that the company explicitly posts.
I wish I'd been signed up to drive on NYE. So many times we just sit home. A friend paid $300 for an Uber ride home. What a great way to start the year!

GRG, I've been thinking a lot about what you posted. I know it's the minority but still, it worried me.
Last night DS3 took an Uber home from a party at 2 am. I was a bit worried, because it was the first time he was taking a Uber from further out to closer in, rather than the other way around. But not worried enough to get out of bed at 1.45 to pick him up.
Today I told him that if he ever feels that something is "off", he should refuse the ride, politely. He should say that he forgot something, or say that he decided to stay longer, whatever. That ride will have already been paid for, then he can either try again 10 min later or call me.
We talked about "instinct" and "gut reactions" and how we are all animals and we need to trust those feelings.
I'm not sure I would have brought that up if GRG hadn't posted what she did, so thank you GRG.

So, I'm in the minority. There have been several cases of Uber riders being robbed and/or attacked by the drivers around here. ODS has taken Uber into and out of Boston with a group of friends, so I figure "safety in numbers". But, I am really, really leery of him taking one from BWI to his college campus an hour or so away. He doesn't know the area, so wouldn't know if the driver had strayed off course, and, he is frankly a little too naive and trusting. I've asked him to wait for, and take, the college's FREE airport shuttle on his trips home. He knows enough about the college shuttle driver (an older, non-traditional student who drives as his work study job) that I feel like I could identify the driver if anything happened. Not so with an Uber driver and a lone passenger. Uber maps your route for you via GPS and you can watch on your phone if the driver veers from the route without discussing it. You can also share your ride details vain text, email or even Facebook. If I am traveling late, I text my DH my details and he can watch my uber on the map and see where I am and get all the car/driver details. Sent from my SM-G920T using proboards
