Faculty meeting this morning just made it even more clear to me that the culture of the department is going to change in a way that I am not comfortable in, and also that my voice is not considered all that valuable, even when it comes to discussion regarding staff.

Holy shit. We have lost 5 of our 7 analysts since July. And they only gave me a 3% raise. It's probably going to be 6 our of 7 and then they won't have a single analyst with more than 2 years company experience - and only 1 with more than a month or two!!! Fire under my butt to really job search.

empress of self-improvement left Panera because she was tired of hurting herself. Then couldn't take the boredom of the next job. Then couldn't hack the parking and traffic of the next job. Then worked myself out of the next job. NOW!!!!! Now I am where I am supposed to be. I go permanent on December 2nd. YEE-HAW!!!!!!! At some point, I will be getting into the billing again. I get to use my brain. It's so exciting. A tad exhausting too.

Empress, after reading your post, I think that, at least at present, "empress of self-invention" would suit you better!

As for yesterday's interview with the work bff and her team - it went pretty well. One question I completely blanked out on. Like literally could not think of an answer to save my life. They kindly let me come back to that one at the end. The other two open positions won't start interviews for a week or two, which is a bummer, because I was hoping I could use one interview for all three positions. Assuming I even get an interview for the other two of course.
The job I interviewed for yesterday sounds meh. The pay is really the big selling point. One of the two other open positions is the one I really want, so if I don't get this one, I won't be too disappointed. Interview for the other two positions (Jobs A and B) is this Wednesday. They won't make a decision on who to hire for the one I interviewed for last week (Job C) until after interviews for A and B are done. I assume I'm not the only one who is interviewing for multiple positions. I really REALLY hope one of these comes through. I can't take much more of my heinous awful controller and would really like to go into the new year with a new work situation.

Today I am working on an application for a position that would take me back into healthcare, this time working for the county and helping run clinics and programs that serve underserved populations in our community. I'm actually pretty excited about it.

Well, I think there are several people from the board who live within 30-50 miles of it.

there is an interesting job op in Olathe KS.....should I apply? What would I be doing pulling up stakes for Olathe KS? idk. Yes! I live one town over from Olathe, and we are in the Olathe school district. Housing is more expensive than most of Kansas in this county, but cheaper than Chicago. It’s definitely a suburb, but you’re not that far from downtown KC, the Plaza area, Crossroads, and more.

We've talked a bit here about cover letters, and I want to talk about them right now as a hiring manager. I require cover letters for certain positions because those positions include composing a lot of written communication, and this helps give me an idea of the person's skill in writing. In addition, it gives people who are looking to make career changes or step-down in their career a chance to explain why they are applying for my position so that I do not automatically throw out their resume as not relevant or over-qualified. And what all of this means is that I read the cover letters, and I make decisions based on them.
Today, I had two applicants for a position that, based on their resumes, were in the top group (lower part of the top group, but still top group). Based on their cover letters, they are no longer in the top group. One was just a letter that said: "I am a great fit for your position based on my skills and experience." And if one of the top two candidates had written that, I would have given them a pass, because their resumes clearly show that their skills and experience are exactly what I am looking for. This person's skills were in a related field, not directly applicable, but one that it is easy to make the switch from. (In fact, my last person in this position came in with that skill set and grew, which is the main reason this person made the top group based on the resume in the first place.) The cover letter was a chance for this person to tell me how she felt she could take those related skills and turn them into what I am looking for. She didn't. The other person was someone who was looking to change direction. They have a lot of experience in higher education, and, in the past, did work that directly related to what I am hiring for. I expected their cover letter to be along the lines of "I have been doing X, but I am interested in getting back to Y", or in some way reference the job I am hiring for. Instead, the cover letter addressed their skills in what they have been doing recently. And yes, a passion for students is great, but when I am hiring someone to work with alumni and corporate partners, I need a passion for outreach, not advising.
Now, this position posted last Wednesday. This was only the first group of applicants passed on by our HR team. I will wait at least one more week before even beginning phone screens. Right now, I have two super solid candidates and three people (including these two) in my High Maybe group.
So all this is to say - if the position requires a cover letter, please take it seriously. It does not have to be super long. A couple of paragraphs is fine. But it needs to connect to both your resume and the job you are applying for.
For the record, one of the people in my "No" group has a cover letter that makes me understand why he applied for this position. So while his skills are not what I am looking for at all, I have another unit in my department that might want to talk to him, and I will pass his information along.

Just applied for two more positions. I have applied for 10 positions in the last month. I haven't heard anything on any of them except the very first one (where I heard back in 4 days). I am being fairly selective in what I apply for, so I am really interested in each of the positions, though the two today might be the ones I am most excited about.

I'm ready to post on this thread now. DH lost his job on Friday.
So far we've updated his resume, updated LinkedIn, he's reaching out to sales contacts to see if their companies are hiring and has called HR out in Colorado to see about severance and if he will get his bonus prorated or not.
Applied for five jobs so far, one was pretty much what he does now. Three were maybes. Found two more today that he fits the description for.
Should have gone into sales, much more options for sales than for science around here. Hopefully this gets turned around quickly and he won't be sitting unemployed for months.
In the meantime he will work for my dad which combined with me working out there a couple nights at a shot should keep us afloat. Given the extremely restrictive qualifications and requirements for UE in Nebraska we both agreed to pass until/unless we absolutely need it.

*hugs* NomoreDramaQ1015. So sorry about the terrible timing. We have a few companies around here that have fiscal years that match calendar years and also do layoffs right before the holidays. It sucks. I hope he finds something soon, but I am glad there's the option to work for your dad to help keep things afloat.

I have a feeling they will pick everyone off one by one till they shut down the Omaha location. His company was aquired in April and they went from a company of 10 to a company of 4. I have a suspicion that three of the remaining people were only kept to smooth the transition until someone in corporate could take over the job. You don't tell people that though because then they will jump ship before you can suck them dry.
I am betting eventually be down to just his boss who is the only one out of the four the company has ever invited to Greeley or bothered to train. He commented that he was wondering if something was up because the accountant lady never came back from lunch. Moments later he was shown the door.
I had a sinking feeling when he told me that his supervisor was not sharing any of the training with him despite the claim, at first, that is why she was going out there.
Hindsight is a real bitch. I should have pushed him harder to start looking as soon as I heard about the buyout. It has been nice to have that income while it lasted but it would have also been nice to have been moving on this before we had no choice.
On the bright side when they asked if he would move to Greeley (another red flag) the answer was no. It would have REALLY sucked to relocate only to have them do this, which was also quite possible. We're better off here with our support network and my job/contacts than we would have been moving out there.

Well we got one lead already. That is good. Put in several more applications. I don't really expect anything to happen between now and the beginning of the year but I am encouraging DH to apply to whatever is out there and wants sales skills so he's on the radar for when/if they do decide to start screening resumes.
He's still super angry and depressed which I don't blame him. I keep trying to point out that the skills he learned in this job, unlike my skill set, translate to a shit load more things than just the beef/food industry. Customer service skills are in high demand. Sales/production are in high demand. While on a personal financial level we are not in the best spot to weather this, job hunt wise we are MUCH better off than when he was a QA. Companies only need one QA legally and it's a very niche field so competition for limited jobs is fierce. Sales skills can translate across all sorts of job niches.
But another boon of dad having restarted the business is now I have "recent" customer service experience which should serve me well. The fact he runs his business in the 21st century helps too because now I have experience with all the facets of a POS system. I need to make him teach me the rest of it in case anything ever happens to him and my brother isn't around.

DH is interested in the job that he got a phone screen for today. He has to take a typing test, hopefully they aren't looking for Word processor fast because he can type efficiently but he's certainly not at the speed I can or my mom can. We'll see. He did get a hold of one customer who was absolutely shocked to learn DH was terminated. It is not a job that pays highly but he offered DH a job operating his new wood fire pizza oven. I think it helped DH's ego a bit when he said he'd hire DH in a second. Since he is connected to the industry he will also keep his ear to the ground. So we'll see here.

At least the typing test is on a computer.
Mom had to pass a typing test when she decided her body could no longer be a waitress. I got the job of giving her timed typing tests. She did fine when I gave them to her, but got all nervous at the real thing.
Somehow dad pulled some strings and she got the job. To show her gratitude, she never missed a day of work until she retired. She was a very dedicated and thankful employee to have a job where she typed all day and didn't have to run around carrying trays of food on her arms.

I can type 60 to 70 wpm. My mom can do 200+ possibly more I've only seen her go at her fastest a couple times.

I used to type 90 to 100 wpm when I typed all day typing proposals for an engineering firm. That was interesting as I learned all kinds of things about building runways for aircraft and building bridges. I didn’t know what rip rap was until I worked there.
