Now that all the media hoopla is over, all the people who had the Confederate battle flag displayed in various ways are still doing it, including my little plastic plate on the front of my p/u truck. The two black guys I see a couple of times of week at the Casey's for morning coffee still have theirs on their tailgate also. Various houses, business', etc. still fly as the status quo was before the media attention. The only ones who made any money on it was people selling them, and media commercial time sold during the hyperbole. Back to southern culture as usual.

The entire country has watched "The Dukes of Hazzard" for more than a generation now, and nobody knew to be offended until the main stream media told us to be offended.

So are you a racist or just a supporter of sovereign citizen criminals? BTW- 'the two black guys I see' is a 100% prelude to 'I am not a racist but' comments. You have black friends- good for you It is a racist symbol period- on top of that before it was a racist symbol it was a symbol of treason. Maybe you ought to read that Constitution you carry in your pocket

It's not a racist symbol. Anyone that believes it is doesn't understand what the secession of the southern states and the Civil War were all about.

To you it might not be but to many others it is, regardless of what the secession and Civil War were all about in your purview.

To you it might not be but to many others it is, regardless of what the secession and Civil War were all about in your purview. It's not what it was about "to [me]"... It's what it was about in reality. The facts prove that the secession and the Civil War weren't about slavery or race. The flag came out of the Civil War. Ergo, the flag is not racist. *I don't deny it's been USED by racists... but then, so has the CROSS and the US Flag. If the "Rebel" flag is racist based on misuse then so too are those.

Doesn't matter. It has become a racist symbol to many regardless of what the apologists have to say or the various justifications they come up with.

The fact that they don't understand/know history is their problem... it's not the problem of people that DO understand it. Plus they don't get to pick and choose. If it's "racist" because it was misused by racists then the Cross and the US flag MUST BE racist too. When they start calling those things racist as well, they will at least get credit from me for consistency.

You sound like the people that say "Nobody has a sense of humour anymore, they're all so sensitive". The reality is people have always been offended, there are just enough of us saying so now to make your life uncomfortable when the ignorance towards others continues.

That flag is not in any way, form or shape a symbol of racism. It is however part of American History and integral part of the southern heritage. Yes, there are those that go nuts and do stupid, idiotic things while wrapping themselves in the flag but that doesn't mean that all those that display the confederate flag are racists, bigots and are still clinging on the idea of an independent south.
That would be what some "righteous" people would have us believe. For most is just a simple "I'm proud that I'm from the south!" or "I do believe in states rights!" Take your pick!

BTW family, heritage, history means jack shit- unless you defend your relatives for owning slaves- that's the problem with the south in general- they think they were right and the slaves had a good life- I have heard this bullshit time and time again. But you are a southerner- I expect as much from you.

The bolded is directly contradicted by the underlined. If you understood history you would know that it wasn't racist. And, as I said, It's not it's fault that racists have usurped it. They've also usurped other symbols. Since you want to go with Germans, the Nazis usurped the Indian symbol for "good fortune" or "well being" too. That doesn't mean it's ALWAYS been racist... just that they MISUSED IT that way. I've read history... that's how I know you are wrong. Maybe you should read history and not propaganda.

But you are a southerner- I expect as much from you. For the record: I can't "defend [my] relatives for owning slaves"... none of them ever did. Also for the record: MOST Southerners (pre-Civil War) didn't own any either. As well as this for the record: Slavery was bad and I don't defend it in any way-shape-or-form. BUT other than slavery (which was only one part of a much larger group of reasons for the secession of the Confederate States) the south WAS right to leave the Union (or at least to TRY and leave).

Not sure how it works in Canada, but in the U.S., one doesn't have the right to not be offended. If a likeness of an antique, historical battleflag has that great an effect on a person, they have problems.

Even you eventually admitted in a post above that slavery may have been a component of the Civil War. You often look for consistency, correct? The history of the Confederate flag, which so many do know, is that it has become a racist symbol.
Plus they don't get to pick and choose. If it's "racist" because it was misused by racists then the Cross and the US flag MUST BE racist too. When they start calling those things racist as well, they will at least get credit from me for consistency.
The KKK did turn crosses on fire into a racist symbol and people such as Rev. Farakkhan believe the US flag is such. Like you, they are entitled to their opinion even if others disagree.

In Canada when we are offended we say so as loud and clear as we can and make the lives of those offending us as uncomfortable as they are making ours. If there was a flag that meant I was sorry you are a free man and would rather you and your family were slaves you would be offended as well and I am very sure you would have a strong reaction.

That isn't at ALL what the confederate flag means to anyone except race baiters and their blind, ignorant followers. Anyway, what does one gain by walking around all butt hurt and offended their entire life? Seems like a sad existence to me. Funny thing is, the only relative of mine whom I have documented proof of fighting in the War of Northern Aggression, fought for the north. I have a copy of his diary.

The confederacy had very little if anything to do with racism. You can believe whatever you want. You can get mad and stomp your feet all you want. You can believe what you want as hard as you want, but it doesn't make it true. If racism were to come to an end, folks like Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson would have no means of making a living. Those and folks like them keep this shit stirred up.

Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson have nothing to do with my views. It is people like yourself that keep insisting on indulging behaviours that are ignorant towards others that keep this shit stirred up.
