Our insurance also hit us with a spousal surcharge. Ours is $75, but they are phasing it in over 3 years.
The justification is that some companies actually pay their employees to be covered under spouses' plans. That's not fair.
They are right. Our insurance points out that they aren't required to cover spouses.
I think that's next.

Was surprised with open enrollment. Just a slight increase in dental premium.
They did eliminate one of the plans. We were told to expect that at last years open enrollment.
We have a spousal surcharge of 100.00 per month if you spouse does not have access to coverage at their job.

The family coverage people are not happy though. Now there is a spousal surcharge of $125/month if you elect to cover a spouse that could get coverage from their employer. This ups the family coverage amount from $163 to $246/check. Ouch. Same for us but it is $20/week if you are grandfathered in, $30/week if you are new to the company. I am switching to my wife insurance No grandfathering in here, so it will be a 40% increase in rates for those that elect to stay on.

Can you drop insurance at any time? DH and I would like to move to Tricare, but it will likely extend beyond open enrollment at his work. I've cancelled my coverage mid year for qualifying life events, but never just to change insurance. I am not sure if this question is for me... I already contacted my wife company and "open enrollment" is considered a qualified life event. The big reason for the jump for us is "IVF". My wife plans covers it while mine doesn't and we don't know yet if we will need to go down that road. Rather be safe than sorry! Actually I was asking everyone for myself. It will take DH and I longer to enroll in Tricare than his open enrollment period, so we will either have to go without coverage in the interim or reenroll with his work and drop in a month or two.

So ex emailed me his companies benefits today (still trying to get me to put our son on his). Anyhow, they offer auto and homeowners insurance as well as all the health and life stuff. Never heard of that before.

Mine offers auto and homeowners insurance, but there is no open enrollment period and they mail me advertisements all year. It isn't subsidized but supposedly there is a volume discount for being at that employer.
