What makes us think that the victim was not shot by the carjackers?

What makes us think that the victim was not shot by the carjackers? The news reports. Why would news reports make up a fake story about a good guy with a strange twist? And your alternate 'theory' takes nothing away from you agreeing with my question to you which read "Do you believe a good Samaritan who unintentionally injures a third party should pick up the shell casings from his weapon and flee the scene of a crime?" Speaks volumes about your integrity.

Well in this particular case the guy shouldn't be running around with guns. He's not a very good shot. But then you think it's okay for the guy to pick up his gun shells and flee the scene.

Update on the carjacking shooting in Houston: "Police officials say that two men jumped the owner of a Chevrolet pickup truck and absconded with his vehicle. As the men struggled with the car-owner, a passerby produced a gun and fired multiple shots, missing the thieves but striking the victim in the head.
The shooter quickly gathered up his shell casings from the pavement and fled the scene. The injured man was rushed to a nearby hospital where he is currently in stable condition. Police recovered the stolen truck about two miles from where the shooting took place. No suspects have been apprehended in the theft or the shooting." Texas ‘good guy with a gun’ shoots carjacking victim in head — then runs awayWhy would the good Samaritan run away? Probably fear of being sued into oblivion or arrested. Now he or she is officially a criminal and will be parted from that weapon as soon as the police figure out who it is.

I assume you response above is to my question to you of "Do you believe a good Samaritan who unintentionally injures a third party should pick up the shell casings from his weapon and flee the scene of a crime?" If I legally shot a criminal and it was in a situation, like on my property. I would take the backhoe and bury him/her in a 10 foot deep hole out in the backwoods section of my property without out telling a soul, because it's easier than dealing with any authority, cops or otherwise. I wouldn't pick up the casings though, it's like I got them all over anyway. I can understand this guy running away. I would do it if I only hit the perpetrators with gunfire and had the opportunity to leave. With all the nut bags out there, I'd just as soon have zero notoriety.

The DA in his area ran on a anti-gun platform ? And the shooter illegally possessed a gun? Either way, the article didn't cover that information.
