A while back I complained about all those articles written by people who want to determine what i can and cannot say. Today I found one that is too good to pass up and really belongs here. It's about people who are in debt. Maybe we can turn this into a 90 things not to say... or even better a "listen up kiddo..." thread with things we all should be saying. So here goes: www.huffingtonpost.com/gobankingrates/9-things-you-shouldnt-say_b_7562134.html?ncid=txtlnkusaolp00000592I'll take the easy one to say to the heavily indebted spendthrift: you better start developing a liking for eating cat food, because there is a lot of that in your future if you keep this up

I once told my BFF, who spends a ton of money on facials and face products, that at least she will look good while standing in line at the food bank during retirement.

I told a black guy, "that is the kettle calling the pot black". When he said, "what" I changed the subject because I didnt want to offend.

"Just because the store accepts your debit card doesn't mean you have money left in your account."
(I really did have to say this to a coworker once. He kept overdrafting, month after month, and was indignant when I informed him that it really was up to him to monitor his account.)

It's already there and cheap!! ETA: I just read the link and I think you should just nod your head and say uh huh and not say anything to someone it debt. Works for me. I tend to keep my mouth shut about money anyway.....

The card gets declined if I don't have the money in my account. I don't get it not being declined.

Then again, this is the same dude who gave up a nice, free (paid-for) car and bought a "cool" car with a six-year loan payback plan. His reasoning: "I pay less every month that way." Duh-ooooooooh.

The problem with that article or list is that only people who are also in debt and still in denial say those things, and they are not thinking about the person they are talking to at all. They are just saying what they want to be true so they can justify their situation. It is likely those people are not reading the financial pages and would miss that article. Even if they did read it - they would still be in denial. They would find some way to either argue with the article, or blot it out of their memory all together.

I need to have a secretary and a personal "talk" person who can keep track of all those "things you shouldn't say...".
I get almost a daily lists of things to say or not to say to mothers who work, mothers who don't, friends, coworkers, your boss, parents of sick kids, parents of dead kids, people on a diet, people who should be on a diet, black people, white people, black people who are married to white people, gay people, single people, married people, people you see at a grocery store, customer service reps, people who drink, people who don't drink but really should be drinking, etc etc etc etc
I think being tactful is a very good quality to have. But so is not being offended by every single remark from every single person about every single aspect of your life.

I'm glad I'm not perfect. It must be completely exhausting. No need to be constantly aware of others faults, shortcomings. I' ve got enough trouble just keeping up with my life.

That mentality amazes me. My EX's mom told me in June she had finally paid off Christmas. He always thought the way you got out of CC debt was to quit charging and keep making payments. He got it from her. Thank GOD I ran the family finances for most of our married life.

But so is not being offended by every single remark from every single person about every single aspect of your life. People are all different. And they are all in different places. At one point you could say to me "Hey, everyone is in debt" and I would feel very good about you and me and the situation. At another I would know you were lying, but would appreciate the effort. At yet a third time, I would have been angry. There is no one single definitive list of things that will or will not offend people.

I don't believe I ever had a discussion with anybody in debt. Well, at one point we were in debt ourselves but slowly we crawled out of it. But if someone mentioned that to me ocasionaly the only answer that I could have would be something like "now get on it and pay it!" I was brought up with the mentality that each individual is responsible for his own actions. My parents never told me "don't smoke, don't drink" but rather " if you smoke, you stink and if you drink, next day you will feel sick not to mention that you might do other stupid things while drunk. The best one was when I was about seventeen and I made a habit of going in town every evening. Ofcourse, chasing girls. Dad, tried a few times to talk me into slowing down but I didn't care much so he said:" if a girl comes at my door pregnant, I won't admit that you are my son!" Tha at made me think twice about everything. I loved my dad too much to put him in the position to say that. Not to mention that my old man would've said it if it were the case!

DIL went all cash because of so much credit card and debit card fraud. A lot of people are now. I cannot say that I blame them. I absolutely refuse to use Apple Pay & etc.

You know what I wish we had, the thumbprint system from Star Trek.
You sign for things with your thumbprint. I just wish it was feasible to implement for a payment system too.

The card gets declined if I don't have the money in my account. I don't get it not being declined. For at least some banks, the default option is to allow overdrafts. I agree that I don't get it not being declined. I have to assume it is the more profitable choice for the bank (fees), and they can spin it that they are doing you a favor. I learned about the default when DD1 opened an account before going to college. I asked about overdrafts, and they changed the default to allow declining instead. I have to wonder if they would have asked her preference if I hadn't asked first, or just left it at the default without mentioning it.

Well, as quoted in another episode, "What are we going to do, present his bloody thumb and ask nicely for the latinum?"
There'd have to be common sense stuff like that added in...it wouldn't work over the internet.

Not really long, but there is some evidence from my googling that the brain does function after death for a short time. like very short... super short... Any significant change in the state of the blood vessels of the eye will render it unrecognizable by a retinal scanner. Death causes significant change in the state of the blood vessels of the eye.

Well now you are just being no fun with all your science stuff Yeah. I've actually used a retinal-scanner identification and access system, so I'm handicapped. Actual experience does, sadly, take some of the fun out of wild speculation.

Yeah, but you know the guy that is wanting to get into that super secret area is not going to buy it when you're telling him your eye won't work outside your head! He's going to be like "Yeah, sure, you just don't want me gouging your eyeball out, very tricky telling me it won't work with all your science mumbo jumbo!" Then he grabs the spoon....
