Gap can actually be super cheap. Routine 40% off even sale plus rewards and good clearance... I sometimes found t shirts cheaper than thrift. And the jeans last. And for kids gap always had elastic waistbands to adjust jeans.
My daughter orders clothes items on etsy, and bags, etc. not that they are essential...

Archie - let me weigh in on the no life insurance thing from the point of view of a widow who got no life insurance when her hubby unexpectedly died. It sucked! I got left with the debt and no extra help in paying it off. Granted I was the much higher earning spouse, but it sure would have been handy to have to cover things like daycare and activities (which is generally what his salary covered).
Hubby had been meaning to get around to buying it, but he dropped dead before it happened. Don't do that to your wife and kids please!

Some of it could be summer clothes for the kids, etc. I think the point is that she isn't taking their "conversation" very seriously. She has lots of time to hit the garage sales for kids clothes. I'll let you tell her how much time she has. I'm always teasing her that she must just sit around eating bon bons all day.

Good lord I identify with this thread. My mom was raised in a reform Jewish family and my dad is Italian Catholic. I was the only kid at my catholic school that also celebrated all the Jewish holidays. Not easy telling Sister Jean (the high school principal) that I was missing a week of school to go to a Bar Mitzvah (my cousins).
I had NEVER eaten a cooked ham until college thanks to a mom who didn't know how to prepare one.

it does piss me off a little (I try not to get too pissed) when I look at the transaction that have posted so far in the this credit card billing cycle (cycle started May 7) and see LL Bean $42, Gap $109, Starbuck reload $25, Etsy $21 and Minted LLC $75. Lots of unneeded crap that doesn't seem too expensive, but adds up. I'm not going to lie...I would flip the fuck out and then I would cancel the credit card. then again, I'm probably not the best one to take marriage advice from That's what I was thinking but then my one marriage ended quite badly. I'm not exactly the poster-person for relationships.

Yeah, that's a hard one to justify So if I opened the card, could I do a BT to that new card with no BT fee and have 0% interest for a time? No fee, and 0% interest for 15 months. What might get you is it may take a bit for the transfer to go through and you might have to let yours ride for one month. I just got off the phone with Chase. They said it can take anywhere from 7 to 30 business days to process a new credit card. If I could do it quickly I would, but I am not sure it is worth it. Why can't I just open it instantly and do the balance transfer at the same time? God, I have gotten lazy.

Might still be worth it if you have a lot on there and want to let it ride at 0% for a year. Of course, if the wife is going to keep spending you might be better letting the cards max out and get declined.

I got frustrated with Macys AMEX last week and they got me a World Mastercard while I was on the phone with them but I had to settle for a 18.5K limit. Could have transfered then & just got the blank checks today (nothing to transfer)

Walmart and Target both have adjustable waist pants. Around here the Gap isn't the problem, it's the 14 billion other, more expensive stores surrounding it that would tempt someone less cheap than me to spend more.

I feel almost horrible that my dad borrowed money from me to get our kitchen stairs replaced but didn't "pay" me back. The quotes are because he let me live at home free after I flunked out of my first college although he made me take classes at NSCC (cael knows the school), while I worked full time, until I got off my ass and went back to school for a degree at Salem State. Took awhile but I did it. I'm not going to begrudge him that. Of course, I was supposed to inherit the house with the spiffy new stairs and all that fun stuff but he dropped dead 6 months after I got married and before we had the pow wow to change everything and Lynn is a shitty city to live in anyway. Lynn, Lynn, the city of sin? Never come out the way you went in!!! That be the one.

We didn't have a target when my kids were young ... I don't remember Walmart having those, or their clothes lasting. I just remember when I realized that gap really wasn't that expensive if you shopped it right. I'm also not terribly tempted by shopping... I pretty much hate it actually ... That said, our Gap closed this year

She has lots of time to hit the garage sales for kids clothes. Some people are weird about 2nd hand clothes, I'm one of them. But I get stuff at Old Navy all the time for $4 or less a piece and that's without putting much effort in deal hunting. I don't have a problem with them per se, but the stuff that you find for boys is limited and tends to be really worn. I can also find brand new clothes on clearance for about the same price as 2nd hand clothes.

Not totally on-topic, but I don't understand why people buy kid's clothing from places like the Gap unless they have an employee discount or get gift cards. Kids are dirty and they grow like weeds... it just seems like a waste of money. I've got some awesome items from Gap at a great sale that lasted me through 3 kids. But that was when I lived walking distance from Gap and did my daily "walks" there. I am sure I could have gotten slightly used Gap at yard sales or second hand stores but that would require a lot more time. Plus, I am lazy and don't like to shop.

Honestly, since you have 3 boys, buying clothes on sale at Gap makes total sense. Not only because with 3 of the little boogers, you may not have time to go to yard sales, but also - sheesh - getting 3 kids' worth of wear is pretty awesome.

Eh, I go to semi-annual consignment sales. Once trip one stop shopping. Get things way less than the sales I can find. DS has gone through pants that I bought new faster than the things I buy at the consignment sale.
