Spent the first fours hours of Saturday calling various dealers, checking options, incentives, rebates, and interest rates.
Spent another four hours at a dealer on Saturday afternoon/evening only to have the numbers change right before we were going to buy. Don't try to pull a switch on an accountant!
We walked.
Mr. Captain is being surprisingly patient with me. I was ready to throttle someone.
Gaaahhh!

Chiv - It's all about the bottom line.
It will either be a Chevy Equinox or Traverse. Chevy's running some killer incentives on the Traverse's right now because there is excess inventory bringing the finances almost down to an Equinox.
DH wants to be able to tow so we need a 6Cyl. I want as much fuel economy as possible so FWD. DH needs to be able to fit a partially broken down pinball machine in the vehicle as well. We also use it to haul stuff for projects at the rentals and around our home.
DH also needs to keep his buns nice and toasty in the winter so he'd like heated seats. Those are our only real requirements. Everything else (color, finishes, etc) is up for grabs.
He's "scouting" at another dealership right now.

I have always been disappointed in my Nissan's heated seats. They take around 15 minutes to get heated, and by that time, my butt has already warmed the seat.

Would you believe that is one of the features DH tested out on the test drive? My Malibu has heated seats (no I didn't pay extra for them). They get too hot too fast for me. I don't use them. So during the winter I get to sit in back so DH (who drives) and DD can have warm buns. I guess it's my fault he want's them now.

I was looking more for a make/model/any "MUST haves" and it sounds like you do have your list. I wasn't sure from your OP idk much about Chevys, is the Traverse the larger of the two you listed? a couple colleagues have Equinoxes, haven't heard any major maintenance gripes. good luck with the rest of the process!

Yea, the Traverse is larger. Also has more bells, whistles, etc. I'm not really into it but the incentives make it kinda hard to pass up (that's the idea, right?)
DH is at dealership #2 as we speak. mmmph.

lol....that was pretty much where I was at with my Mazda. my must have's were leather (for the dog), sunroof (for me) and it had to be manual. by the time my house purchase settled out and I was ready to make the move, the only 2014 left that had all three of those items was the GT model - for about $6k more than I'd planned to spend. after incentives and such, I ended up getting the 2014 loaded Mazda 3 for about what I'd have spent for an almost stripped-down 2015 of the same.
I had my last car 11+ years. I'm hoping to do the same with this one - not likely for the mileage I'm putting on it - because I hate car shopping too. what pisses me off is when I happen to hit up a dealership with a guy friend, and the dealer acts like I don't exist.

Go play on Cargurus.com (That's what I did when I shopped for my Equinox.) You can put down what you want in the vehicle, & find out which dealers in your area have the vehicle with the extras you want. (Since you're on the computer anyway...)
Good Luck! BTW, I love my new Equinox, but I wish I would've got the 6 cyl. But, on the positive side, the 4 cyl gets fabulous mileage on long road trips.

True story. Earlier in our marriage I was doing the scouting for my car and actually had an asshole of a salesman tell me I should bring my husband back so we could discuss things in detail. (Insert sound of atomic bomb going off here) I politely told the salesman it appeared they didn't want my business. Later I wrote an *ahem* well worded letter to the dealership and actually had the owner write me back tripping over himself in apologies. By then it was too late, I'd already gotten something from another dealer. DH just sits back and let's me do the talking. As does my Dad and sister. Apparently I've got a bit of a 'reputation'. I've actually negotiated for three (going of four) cars over the past 5 years. I won't say no to family but man I hate this stuff.

the car I bought after college, I turned spring quarter's worth of date nights w/my then-BF into "let's go test drive everything I think I might be interested in" - within a certain price range, I mean. most places were fine, but this one dealer kept talking to J as if I wasn't even there. J repeatedly told the ass that he ought to be talking to me, since I was the one buying the car.....but it didn't seem to matter. for those of you familiar with the Boston area, I did my test driving spree on route 1 (Walpole-Dedham) and this dealer got taken on a drive halfway into West Roxbury. he was displeased, but I didn't GAF. I wouldn't have bought a pencil from him after that sales pitch, and I was going to have fun driving that Eclipse Spyder.

Captain, you'll love this! (I've written about this here in the past.) I negotiated & bought a car at a dealership, & the only thing my husband did was cosign for the loan. When the title arrived, it was in MY HUSBAND's name. Well, since it was in HIS name, DH wrote the dealership, telling them I'd done all the work, it was my wife's car, & why did they put it in his name, & implied that if he bought a pick-up truck from them, & they put it in his wife's name, he'd be royally p*ssed off. (I was going to write the letter, but since the car was in DH's name, we decided it'd be more effective if he wrote it.) Anyway, I got a nice apology letter, & they paid to change the name on the title. The funny part was, the title ended up with my first name, & DH's middle name. But, we're hoping they learned SOMETHING.

Have you given thought to purchasing a shopping cart instead? They are cheaper and much much easier to push down those shopping isles. They are considered "green" and never require fuel or an oil change Ok, Ok, wyouser is off to the stool in the corner and will put on the pointy cap

I have to say- I could not agree with you more. I hate car shopping. We recently had to buy a car (mine was quickly dying- nearly 300k so not unexpected). We had gone out and test drove a few of the cars we thought we might want. I make DH go because I hate dealing with salesman. HATE IT. I hate the high pressure tactics. It just doesn't fly with me
Anyway- I called a couple buying groups we have access to, to find out what price they can get for what we decide on. Meanwhile, DH realizes there is a dealership close to his work that has some online pricing. 2.5K less than the best price by the buying groups and nearly 5k less than the dealerships we had talked to. So I hit there " i'm interested in buying" button on the one I want and schedule a time to come up.
When I arrived, the exact vehicle (they didn't bait and switch) is waiting for me with the keys in it to go drive- and the guy takes mine for a spin. We get in to fill the paperwork out and price is $250 higher than I expected. I start to flip out when DH says he asked for the rubber mats, which aren't included, but he knew we would want.
They didn't jack the price at all. It was unbelievably painless. And yes- I have recommended the hell out of them.

I had pretty good experience with the internet sales people too. My only bad thing to say is someone else sold the car I was coming for five minutes before I got there! I would have given then a credit card for the damn deposit if they would have asked! But they did right by showing me a car they hadn't even priced yet. A little more than 3k less but there's days I wish I had volume controls on my steering wheel, usb port, and Bluetooth.

Sometimes I still pinch myself to see if it's real. DH was happy cause he didn't have to listen to me bitch. I turn very dark and sarcastic when I deal with car sales people. One time, the guy asked me " what prices would get you into this car today?" I answered in all seriousness " A dollar". Neither the sales guy or DH was amused. umm- I meant it.

I didn't love the Civic when I drove it, the Mazda has more oomph for the same $. and for the love of god, don't get a Toyota. idk what it is about Toyota drivers around here, but whenever there is an accident or someone that will eventually cause one by the way they are driving, it's almost always a Toyota. gah. sent from my electronic distraction

Have you checked out the new Chevy Trax? It's a little smaller than the Equinox, but it's got most, if not all the items you're looking for. (I considered it, but I needed something a bit bigger.) BTW, I LOVE the backup camera on my Equinox. Best invention in cars since heat!
