Why would someone pay for a survey to show gun ownership rates are down?
Besides it is old news- gun ownership has been declining for years.

I really don't know what to think about this survey. ... I guess if you pay enough money, you can get a survey that shows what ever you want. ... Since 1972, the General Social Survey (GSS) has been monitoring societal change and studying the growing complexity of American society. General Social Survey (GSS) The link has a great deal of information which would give you background on the survey. Seems to me to be a solid survey.

Have you priced guns lately? The gun I bought a few years ago is almost twice the price. DH's has gone up a bit more than half. I went in to buy a smaller carry for myself and changed my mind.

With the anti-gun mentality of this Presidential Administration, fewer people are welling to admit they own or carry.

Most people I know that own a gun own many guns, so I suspect this is correct. I know quite a few that collect them, and have guns of all types, as well as antique guns. As with most collectors, if you have the money, you end up wanting to have one of each.

It specifically said there was a noted relationship to fewer hunters.
We have at least 5 in the house.

Your original link also reported the increase in gun sales Wonder if 'they' paid for that or it was just a bonus. Real simple- more guns in fewer hands- just like the wealth in this country.

I own a LOT, and I can carry, just normally do not. Don't feel the need.
The main reason I got a carry permit was so I can transport without having to go through the hassle of keeping the guns and ammo separate and all that crap every time I want to go shooting.

Whether there i a lowering in gun ownership or not ..it is still estimated by reliable sources that there are over 300 million guns owned by Americans... www.gunfaq.org/2013/03/how-many-guns-in-the-united-states/and I doubt it will ever be going down....It is what it is...Americans love the damn things...possible as much as they love baseball, football, sex and pizza...and giving those things up isn't going to be happening...especially the pizza.

That is why I question the survey, looking at the number of background checks, the gun manufacturers that can not keep up with the demand.

Fewer households have weapons but many households have more than one gun owner residing there. Additionally some gun owners are probably buying multiple weapons over short periods of time. Therefore, an increase in the number of background checks.

In the latest American Rifleman The is an article about The NRA Mentor.
It state that over the last five years, 40 Million Americans have purchased their first gun.
That does not look like gun ownership is dropping.

We are a household. Son has two, daughter has one, husband has at least three.... I'm not sure how it works with the kids... If husband or my dad was checked because they purchase for them? Or if they were checked themselves as minors?
If if it used to be 4 million and 1, technically it is dropping...

Looking at the news one would think crime is getting worse too.

I am amazed at the quantity of weapons some gun owners have. Really amazed. You shouldn't be. I'm just trying to keep up with the DW. It's kind of like a marital deterrent. Seriously though, We have too many handguns and currently have 2 up for consignment sale at a local gun shop, with 2 more to go after those sell.

I know a guy in his early 80s that has about 200 of them and the corresponding ammo, at least a box of 20 rounds for each. Most of them have never been fired, some of them weren't fired at all in the last 20plus years. He didn't buy all of them at a store either. Most of them were received as payement or part of for things that he did. Anything from your black powder pistol to a real Tommy Gun. Some of them fully automatic. Acording to him, he has papers on one pistol that he use to carry after getting in a scruff. The rest of them nobody knows they exist. I don't believe he has kids either except a step son. From what he said, that would qualify as his step son's inheritance.

Actually I was speaking to people that I know that own a lot of weapons. A couple of guys at work have amazing collections. Another friend had a buddy of his ask him to store his guns for him when he went on an extended cross country sabbatical. Holy Arsenal Batman! My friend, a gun owner himself like I am, was nervous with how to safeguard them all. The stash included everything from petite little ladies derringers to borderline illegal serious weaponry.
The guys at work are hunters and target enthusiasts and their collections are understandable. This other guy isn't the most stable person I know to say the least, and his collection is therefore a bit un nerving. But, it is what it is.
The DW and I are down to about 35 (I think) and we are going to sell all the ones we don't use anymore on a regular basis. I recently aquired, about five years, ago my FIL's collection after he passed away. That is part of the too many guns scenario. The only one I'll keep that I rarely use is a bolt action Barrett in .50 BMG. The range on that thing is almost unbelievable.

He said "mentality" which I would have to agree with around and before the Newtown school shooting. After trotting out the grieving parents on the liberal media on a regular basis. Leading up to the failed gun restrictions vote by Congress in 2013. He's since moved on to his next attempt at another legacy. Carbon emission control through EPA regulation.

And a particular survey would accomplish what?
'Gee honey- I was going to buy a gun, but this survey shows ownership is down so I better not'
I think his money would be better spent backing laws.
And again- gun ownership is down and has been for years- old news. No nefarious plot or agenda driven surveys.

The General Social Survey is administered by NORC at the University of Chicago, primarily using in-person interviewing. The GSS started in 1972 and completed its 30th round in 2014. The typical sample size was 1,500 prior to 1994, but increased to 2,700-3,000 until 2008, and decreased to 2,000 for the most recent surveys. Resulting margins of error are between plus or minus 3.1 percentage points for the smaller sample sizes and plus or minus 2.2 percentage points for the larger sample sizes at the 95 percent confidence level. The 2014 survey was conducted March 31-Oct. 11, 2014, among 2,538 American adults. The GSS 1972-2014 Cumulative File was used to produce the statistics presented.
Yeah....this is accurate.
IL is one of the most restrictive gun states in the US. I seriously doubt that they were sampling from all states (in person interviews) and if they were, the sample size is not near sufficient to determine anything statistically. Data is not generalizable.
