I just heard that NJ and NY are shutting the subways down. Why? Some of them are above ground. Once they leave Manhattan and go into Brooklyn, Queens, the PATH to Newark,, etc., they are above ground.

My son just came over, pissing and moaning about how cold it is. "Would you rather have three feet of snow? Consider yourself lucky that it's too cold to snow here. You'd have to do a LOT of shovelling. Your two cars and mine." Sorry. I know it was Bhutan and where it is. I got sidetracked about the lack of indoor plumbing and then went off on a tangent. I don't do mountains so that would be out as I am afraid of heights. Just because I was born in the mountains does not make me like them. I lived in the foothills of Colorado for 3 semesters and hated every last minute of it. I never should have sobered up then maybe it would have been bearable. Tiger sharks might make great pets. It's not like shark week doesn't visit this household once a month, every month. At least for now. DH wouldn't mind a pet tiger shark or tiger, for that matter. I think we'll stick to cats for now. Oh. That's a shame. So...I guess the Tiger's Nest Monastery is out, then?

No, but I'm sure it's a strain on the power grid to keep them running if they can get away with shutting them down. There have also been murmurs of a possible power outage, and I would not want to be stuck in the dark for an undetermined amount of time in a subway filled with people as claustrophobic and grouchy as I am.

You got it now. For example, the C train/subway may originate in lower Manhattan at Wall Street but its scheduled route may end up in Brooklyn some where, much of the route on the elevated rails.

That's the first thought which came to my mind as a reason for the possibility of them being shut-down.

It kind of threw me for a loop initially. You also have stairs going into the subways from the outside, right? I can see people falling down them with 3 feet of snow blown into them. All of our entrances are enclosed.
It's all underground. We used the earth from the excavations to build islands in the St. Lawrence. That's where the World's Fair was held. Expo 67.
(It's the safest way to travel during big storms.)

The governor already declared a state of emergency. We have to be off of the roads by midnight. He said to prepare for a week without power because the crews cannot start repairs until the hurricane strength winds die down. Oy. Hey, but that's why we live here -- right? We LOVE the 4 seasons!! Would it be inappropriate for me to post a picture of my AZ house that I'm trying to rent/sale here?

All of this blizzardy talk is making me nervous. It was 50 degrees in the usually frozen Midwest. When we spent more time at our mountain place, we would make sure we had plenty of steaks and beer. The place was heated with a fireplace. Light was oil lamps and candles if the electricity went out. The majority of the water used was hauled but we'd melt snow for various uses. There was a gas snow thrower nearby. A lot was done with the shovel to dig vehicles out. The worst storm and I wasn't there was in the late 70s. Eleven feet of snow fell in two days around Thanksgiving. That place is for the young, strong and hearty. A great place for lovers.

We are still here!!!!! We made it through -- SO FAR -- without losing power. All of the trees in our rental's yard are still standing. I won't get by to see my house until much later today or toorrow. It's still snowing like a banshee. The snow is very deep -- halfway up the door.. The walkway to the mailbox is indistiguishable from the rest of the yard (it had been shoveled from the 8 inches we got the other day). We have a mailbox on a post and the box sits on a shelf about waist high -- the snow is up to the shelf. Of course, the snow is also blowing and drifting, so there are likely pockets of more and less depth. I'm guestimating 24 inches here -- which is at least down from the 36 inches they forecasted yesterday. Our rental is at the corner of two country lanes. The corner is actually the meeting point of two hills. I slept with an ear to the storm last night, listening for falling trees, the loss of power, any other trouble. I heard large plows -- HUGE, powerful trucks -- trying to make it up the hills during the night. In the area, much of the coast took a beating. An area of Marshfield was almost washed out to sea when a seawall was breached. 30,000 power outages, but they seem to mostly be along the coast -- NOT bad at all considering just one power company was predicting 400,000 outages. The island of Nantucket took it all full force -- hurricane force winds, flooding -- the entire island is without power. Still have to get through the rest of the day, but things always feel a lot less threatening and more manageable during the daylight, don't they? So, sitting back, sipping hot coffee, cinnamon rolls in the oven, nowhere to be, nowhere to go, it's all good, folks, it's ALL good.

As if it weren't bad enough that there's 6 feet of snow behind my car, my freaking neighbor has been blowing the snow from his walk and driveway behind my car. They already the bulk of their snow in our side yard because there isn't any room between their house and driveway, which is damn inconvenient for us because that would be the easiest place for us to snow from our driveway. Freaking asshat!!

We didn't get nearly what they predicted, thankfully! I have what is probably a stupid question...why do people stock up on water? I've lived in N. NJ my whole life and have never lost water. How do you lose water?

How do you lose water? A couple of reasons: 1. Many homes in New England have wells instead of city/town water. The water from the wells is pumped into the homes via electric pumps. No power, no water pump, no water. 2. City/town water is treated before it gets to our homes. If the water treatment plant loses power, the water isn't treated, and can quickly become contamintated. 3. It's a conspiracy between bottled water companies and bottled-water-company-stock-owning gubmint folks.

How do you lose water? Plus some water treatment plants might be near rivers or other water that overflows the banks. I was without water for about a week during hurricane Floyd because of the flooding around the water treatment plant.

I've been lucky water-wise. I hear of people filling their bathtubs so they have water to flush also.

We're alive with electricity and running water and it is still snowing here too. I have no idea how much we have because it's drifted so much that it looks a couple feet in some areas. My driveway has the Great Wall of Snow around it. Neighbors snow-blowed it out since one of them is parked in it and their kid shoveled my porch off. I love my neighbors. We didn't think about buying water. We figured we'd just scoop up snow and melt it. Slushies!!! Hell, I didn't think about buying anything. Or more to the point, thought about it then forgot about it. Didn't feel like getting dressed.

Public Service Announcement:
Make sure that your heating vent is clear. If it's on the side of your house, it could be blocked off and you could die of carbon monoxide poisoning.
I cheated and had my new furnace vented out my old chimney-even though code forbids it now-for just this very reason. I could not see how creating a new hazard was helpful. If I ever sell the house, I'll have to change it, but for now I feel safer.

I just got off the phone with my friend at my old condo asking me about where the heating vents are!!! Hers still comes out of the chimney because it hasn't been replaced in 20 years while ours go out the side of the house. I was going to do laundry but not sure I want to climb the mountains to get to the vent to clear it off.

I've only lived in homes where the heat vents out the chimney, so I was totally confused when we started getting warned to clear the heat vents on the side of the house. In my area, anyway, old homes still outnumber new construction. But, IIRC, an entire local family -- parents and young kids -- died of carbon monoxide poisoning a year or two ago when the snow clogged up their wall vent. So, don't only clear the vents, but double check that your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are working.
