OK, so my offer of hotel for spring break has been summarily rejected-- it was a nice hotel, too. Oh well.
The family is coming down for spring break, and even though it's peak season, they got a decent deal on a house-- vacation rental.
This really doesn't effect me directly, but out of curiosity has anyone done this and how to you split the cost? They have narrowed it down to a discussion of "per person" or "per bedroom".
My opinion is per bedroom, with a premium for the master is best because it automatically allocates not only the cost, but the space.

Agreed on the "per bedroom" - you'd pay per room at a hotel - but if there are issues with the MB, what about a flip of the coin? But as for as groceries, misc for the week I'd say either by person or consumption...by consumption only in cases of alcohol, meat, etc if there are those who lean heavily either way, and splitting the costs straight is an issue. (for instance you've got the guy/gal who will drink 5x what anyone else will drink or a vegetarian when everyone else are carnivores) Otherwise, I'd think that the costs would mostly wash.

I agree with the "per bedroom" ... with (perhaps) a premium charged for the master bedroom with attached bathroom. Otherwise, I'm not sure how food should be split up ... and if everyone will be eating the same things, etc.

We split the food by meals. A person will usually be responsible for 1 breakfast and 1 dinner. They decide what the meal will be and provides the appropriate food. We do have pre-discussions so we aren't eating the same thing at every meal. Everyone brings snacks to share.

With respect to groceries, the rules are usually this:
1. Everyone comes into it with the knowledge all the receipts will be kept, and the total split by the number of adults + kids- or anyone eating "adult" meals (having what we're all having). 2. Everything purchased is for everyone-- if you need or want something special, you are expected to buy that yourself at the point of purchase. None of this "we'll pay for it later", or anything else that causes confusion-- and that goes mostly for kid meals when the kids need something "special".
However, this trip is a little different because my wife and I actually live in Delray now, so I'm sure my wife and I will spring for a lot of meals, and we'll be eating out a lot (if you've never been to Delray, you could literally eat out every single night for a month and still not eat at all the GREAT restaurants in the area. It's like a food & wine festival every day and twice on Sundays).

Delray Beach is on the southern Atlantic coast of Florida just south of Palm Beach, and just north of Boca Raton (Fort Lauderdale). It's a little slice of heaven- a welcoming, friendly little town, upscale, but not snobby. It has a very long stretch of well-groomed Atlantic beach with top notch facilities.
You should all come down some time!
