Ooo! Thank Paul! That's a good idea having a fog horn. I'll have to put one on my truck just for shits and gigles! And scare the morrons out of their shoes too!

I do the same thing. I closely watch the person as I'm about to pass and they start touching the white line I honk to wake them up. I was driving around with a boat horn (air horn) in the car the other day on the way back from the marine supply and this absolute fossil with coke bottle glasses was in the popular-for-her-kind "praying mantis" position (hands at 11 and 1, lurched forward with chin just above the center of the wheel, mouth agape) squinting and fumbling about trying to dial her phone in her right hand on the wheel and trying to dial with her left hand- also on the wheel. She was in the far left lane on I-95 (three lanes across at that point) of course, so I opened my window and hit the air horn as I went by on the right and I swear I thought she was going to wreck the car. I think there's a hemispherical bump in roof where she hit it. I looked back- she slopped across two lanes of traffic and used the exit. Good plan. Not something I would broadcast. You should be charged with assault.

I was also shocked into silence after reading that and had to bite my tongue.
You thought it was funny to scare the be-jeebers out of the old gal? She could very likely have suddenly veered across lanes of traffic, and either crashed into someone or have someone crash into her - with someone getting maimed - or heaven forbid, worse.
What a dumb-f*** thing do do.

I'm trying to understand how he noticed so much detail about her and performed the actions he did without taking his eyes off his own lane for an unsafe amount of time.

Airhorn to an old lady? WTF?
Yeah I get it that bad drivers are bad for the roads, and bad for others, and annoying as all get out... but the problem doesn't get solved by making them WORSE drivers by scaring the crap out of them... WHILE they are driving!

We need to have "smart roads" and "smart cars" that can track our cars... and talk to the DMV and the insurance companies.
Weave in and out of traffic? Your rates go up. Speed? Your rates go up, and you get a ticket in the mail. Drift and correct too often? Your rates go up. Brake and accelerate too much (without all the other traffic ALSO doing it? Your rates go up.
Drive reasonably, safely, and within the law? Your rates stay reasonable or go down if you maintain safe driving.

Now you sound like Paul, who thinks that if you can't afford to pay $5k a year to renew your license that you shouldn't be allowed to drive. Only the elite, yanno?
I'm not a perfect driver. I speed (5-10 mph hour over IF conditions are safe to do so). Sometimes, though not often, I may weave to avoid the squatters who don't understand that slower traffic should stay to the right. But I don't think that doing those things means that I need to be "big brothered". I'm not an aggressive driver by any means. Never been in, nor caused, an accident. I watch what's going on around me.

I honk, but I also have a terrible driving temper and tend to yell a people at the top of my lungs if the mood strikes me! Once when I was pregnant some guy was driving about 25/30 mph in front of me on a road that is posted at 45 mph... Boy did he get a ear full, lmao, I screamed and cussed at him and yelled "I will f&#%ing kill you if you don't move it!!!" I'm pretty sure he got the hint and I was still so pissed when I got home I marched past DH, grabbed a pillow and started screaming into it . DH was like WTH I also don 't mind giving people the finger Don't mess with me on the road! Oh, my! Have you thought of seeing someone about your anger issues? You sound very tightly-wound.

It was juvenile, dangerous and put everyone at risk. If it was up to me, I'd take your license away, until you stopped behaving like a 13 year old.

I really don't see what's so reprehensible about it. The fossil poking along in the fast lane paying more attention to her phone than the road around her was endangering every other motorist on the road. If Paul's actions cause her to rethink her driving habits he might have just saved a life. And, if Paul's actions cause her to lose it and swerve into traffic, colliding with the car of a family going to visit relatives, he might have cost quite a few lives. Personally, I don't see that possibility being worth the risk just so I can play traffic cop and control a "fossil" (I think of those folks as people, not fossils, but that may be because I'm old).

He was so busy examining her, her glasses and her hands, that he could have just looked at her licence plates and called 911 to report dangerous driving. Instead, he made it even more dangerous.
It was a spectacularly stupid thing to do.

Pity there was no law enforcement nearby to witness it. He would have been arrested for reckless driving and put in handcuffs, while hollering "The old biddy deserved it! Don't doubt me! EVER!"

The woman was driving dangerously slow, was engaged in a deadly distraction, and was caught off guard precisely because she was oblivious to where she was, what she was supposed to be doing, and out of touch with the requirements of being behind the wheel in the left of three lanes of interstate highway with a 70 mph speed limit. All I aimed to do was get her properly focused. She is the one who should not be permitted to drive, period.

She's responsible for her driving. I made a NOISE. I didn't DO anything. If she can't stay focused on her driving and the toot of an air horn from a passing vehicle can cause her to lose control of her automobile, she doesn't have sufficient control over her car to begin with, and SHE is the danger.

She was already distracted by trying to simultaneously drive (about 55 mph in the far left lane) and dial her phone while blind. Someone needed to get her attention, and since we can't arrest her and impound her vehicle- I did the one thing I could do to get her attention, and get her focused.

And they already have what you're saying- it's "free" from Progressive and other companies. You basically get a black box for your car and they track certain behaviors for a discount.

It's not your job to control other people, Paul. What you can do, if you feel there's a real danger, is make a call to law enforcement and let those whose job it IS do that job. I've done that myself. By doing what you chose to do, you could have caused a catastrophe that cost multiple lives. That isn't in question, despite your protestations to the contrary.

You really have no idea how much worse I'm going to get as I get older, do you? I can't speak for welts, but my answer to that question is: "Yes, I do." However, that problem lies on the shoulders of you, your family, your neighbors and anyone else who comes in contact with you, either by choice, or by accident. Hopefully, it won't cost any their lives.

omgosh.. i'm just going to stop here before i break our CoC. The point of sounding the air horn at her when I went by- having no idea that she was so engrossed in her phone distraction that it would startle her out of such a deep trance to the point that she might lose control of her car- was to alert her to the fact that she was being passed on the right by countless other automobiles. She clearly doesn't have any business driving, it wasn't just that she jumped at the noise, it is that she then proceeded- through no fault of mine or anyone but hers- to illegally, and without signalling, slop across two lanes to make an exit. None of that is the result of anything I did. Nobody was in that car but her. She had full control of it. I did not reach over and grab the wheel. I made a noise. Trucks, if you haven't noticed, have an extremely loud horn, or set of horns. It's very clear to any objective person that a driver on the expressway ought to be able to maintain control of their automobile no matter what is happening around them. Sudden loud noises, changes in traffic patterns, erratic driving (the other drivers managed to negotiate around her illegal and potentially deadly sudden maneuvers) of other cars, and so on and so forth. If she wrecked, or caused a wreck by her illegal careless and reckless operation of her car, it would be nobody's fault but her own. She was cleary already distracted to the point where she was a threat, or I wouldn't have felt the need to wake her old ass up.

Someone did. Desperately. She is the kind of driver that if traffic laws were enforced for maximum safety instead of maximum revenue, should have been pulled over, arrested for reckless driving, her license suspended or revoked, and her car impounded. I can't "cause" anything from my car involving her car. She, and she alone is responsible for her illegal careless and reckless driving.
