One of the Eaglets actually branched today. Both eaglets are getting large, sitting on the rail of the nest preening theirselves.

'You don't go and raise your dinner': California eagles defy odds by taking in baby hawkREDDING, Calif. – Something just didn’t look right. Terri Lhuillier, an avid eagle-watcher in Redding, California had been keeping an eye on this particular nest outside of town since May. But by this day in mid-June, when she and her husband were going over their most recent batch of pictures, they noticed something in one shot that they hadn’t picked up on in person. When they went back to get a better look, they realized why the little speck had been so easy to miss. “I couldn’t believe my eyes,” Lhuillier said. “I was looking, and I was like, ‘Wait a minute, that body is way too much smaller than the other two.’” A red-tailed hawk chick was in the nest, coexisting with two eagle parents that would normally turn it into dinner and two adoptive eagle siblings. “I mean, every time I see it, I’m like, ‘How is this little thing surviving amongst four bald eagles?” Lhuillier said. "(Eagles) have some of the best vision in the animal world. You’ve gotta know something doesn't look right here. I mean, this doesn't look at all like an eaglet, and they’re not reacting to that at all. So we’re just like, 'Yes, love is blind.'" Complete article here: link

Tennesseer Maybe the eagles thought they just had an ugly one. It takes after your side. Nope your side. Little hawk thinks. I woke up again today and got fed in my bed. Life's good.

We are off to a new season on the nest. Harriet and M15 have been mending the nest in anticipation of a new hatch this season. It has been off to a harsh reality check as Harriet has been attacked once or twice in the middle of the night by an owl. She will sleep on the nest. Not sure if she is near egg laying status yet. The owl sweeps in and does a direct hit on her. So far a few feathers fly but she seems ok. The attack I saw on video showed M15 out on a branch heard the attack, looked Harriet's way and ignored the situation.......

The eagles have been fairly active around the nest and have been feasting on squirrels quite a bit. Wish they would fly to our area. We are over run with squirrels. Saturday morning we had two American eagles flying and circling overhead at our house fairly low. I imagine they were circling the ponds to catch a fish. Went on the website and Harriet was in the tree, so I know it was not this pair......

Harriet laid an egg yesterday. This is the earliest date for an egg being laid on the nest. Hopefully we will have a second egg by the weekend. Nature does not want a large number of days betwen eggs as the second chick will be dominated by the first eaglet and food to the second one will be a problem as parents do not favor a weak eaglet...... www.dickpritchettrealestate.com/eagle-feed.html

Harriet laid a second egg late yesterday. We are now set up for bobblehead fighting sometime probably before Christmas.

So the bald eagles in Canada are Canadian bald eagles? I would not really know. I would think they are American Eagles up there too! What do Canadians call the American Bald Eagle up there? The U.S.A. is the United States of America. This does not mean the USA IS ALL OF America or even North America..........and I am not sure if they are officially known as the North American Bald eagle. Then again, you do have Canadian geese don't you? We do not call them American geese down here!

Depending on which country they live in, bald eagles carry either a U.S. passport, Canadian passport, or a Mexican passport. If Mexican bald eagles (for example) hatch eaglets in the USA, those eaglets, also slangly called anchor chicks, will automatically be issued U.S. passports according to the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

Now that we have decided the Nationality of the Bald Eagles, just a simple reminder there are two eggs on the great American nest, south of the Mason Dixon line, for whatever that means.......and we are probably less than a week away from the first egg hatching Check in on them for a few relaxing non-political minutes of nature at it's best!

Even though it is dark out. I could see the eagle on the nest as well as some movement under the eagle.

The eaglet looks more like prehistoric birds of prey than eagles these early days of life.

Well, I have not been posting since the first week in January, and things have happened on the nest. The original eaglet that hatched passed away from poison, and the second egg never hatched. Harriet and her mate proceeded to have a second hatch, and both eaglets are alive and well so far. This hatch will be a hard one in my opinion, because Florida will be really hot before these birds fledge, and they are a few months behind the learning curve of "Florida nature" when they do fledge the nest. Anyway, if anyone wants to get away from the Corona virus problems, tune in and enjoy for awhile and if you have children home now maybe put it on for them to watch. dickpritchettrealestate.com/eagle-feed.html
