The little ones are alone on the nest so easily viewed right now. I have to watch the compilations they put together. The live feed should be called "Eagles Doing Absolutely Nothing". It'd be spot on 99% of the time. Wait a few weeks when they start walking around the nest. Everyone thinks they will fall over the edge. The chat gets serious and people have to turn off the camera feed because they think the chicks will kill theirself going over the edge. The other day E8 choked on a piece of food and the followers were have heart palpitations, not unlike some Democrats on this board worrying about Trump winning the nomination

I can understand not wanting to watch them die on live TV. Reading the synopsis of the activity over the years the feed has been active, I see that a few eaglets have died due to "unknown causes". Hence unlike the poor fools waiting with bated breath to win the Powerball jackpot, there does appear to be some non-vanishing probabilities involved here.

I love driving over to the nest area. Watching these magnificent birds perched in the nest area, talking to each other, gliding down to the pond area, or flying off in the distance to hunt. It is a great show. Of course you cannot see the eaglets in the nest. Have to sit at home to do that. I know they are in a suburban setting, but still are creatures of nature living life right in front of humanity. And a few horses in the pasture below!
Just so happy it is not in a zoo setting with people talking and laughing and children yelling, "Look momma Eagles!" Everything is a hush tone, and nothing but appreciation from those of us around the nest area, for mother nature on display for us in all it's glory.

There is a feeding in progress on the nest right now. One chick holding the other down with it's wing so it gets first priority but both are being fed.

We are having some difficulties with E8 One of it's talon is caught in the bottom of the nest for about a day now. It cannot pivot around in the nest, but has been fed. Mods do say the parents have been working on freeing up the talon, but no luck yet. One person says it looks like fish line, but mods claim it is caught in the moss.

Early this afternoon a cherry picker on a truck was used to hoist a person up to remove E8 from the nest for treatment. It was taken to CROW for treatment and removal of the fish line wrapped around the talon. They also removed a fish from the nest in case it had a hook in it. The adult Eagles are still upset with the situation and have not settled back into a routine. There is no word on whether the eaglet will be returned to the nest. Lots of considerations to make. If taken out of the nest, the older eaglet may be too physical to it when it is returned, protecting it's territory, etc. When eaglets are removed, it is possible to place them back into this nest, or even another Eagle nest, and should be accepted by the adults. It was exciting to see it removed from the nest. The Department of wildlife does not necessarily remove injured birds from the nests, but in this case they made a decision to do it. Here is a video feed showing part of the rescue effort. www.news-press.com/story/news/2016/02/09/eaglet-tied-nest-taken-rehab-center/80063794/?from=global&sessionKey=&autologin=

Such a shame about little E8. No broken bones according to reports; however, there is some danger of nerve damage. Reports from CROW said we should know more tomorrow. Sure hope the little one recovers.

Sure hope the little one recovers. Yes, will sure need the talon working so it can hunt in the wild. Right now probably being fed well, and under some heat lamps living the good life! E7 was alone this afternoon in the nest for periods, and seemed a little lost. No parent, no sibling to cuddle up with

Poor little guy. Probably felt abandoned. The parents were upset with the intrusion, and were trying to settle down by flying around the nest area. I imagine in their thought process, they were regaining territorial superiority.

Yes, I read about that interval in the chat. I agree with your assessment as to the reason for the flying around. I just hope the little one recovers completely and can come back and be accepted back into the family.

The people posting are always asking the question that was just answered..........or the answer is posted on the header at the top of the home page. Way too much worrying and wailing.

Yeah, I noticed that. I don't take part. I just take a look for the answer to any question I might have. Chat rooms like that one just drive me crazy if I try to read them, or actually enter in.

The mods are very good at trying to settle down the troops. Good thing you do not have all these loose cannons here. It is like herding cats. Have you ever read the chat, when they have a grade school class asking questions? The chat is for the classroom, and their answers are so classy and thoughtful for the kids.

I have seen the classroom parts and I think they're great! What a wonderful opportunity they're offering for children to learn, and to get involved. I give them a lot of credit for that. As to the regular chat, I just ignore it unless I'm looking to see if some particular question I might have is being discussed. If it's not, I go back to watchin' the birds. I've never actually signed into the chat.

You've got to love a website that claims "Eagles are wild birds and anything can happen in the wild. The Southwest Florida Eagle Camera (SWFEC) does not interfere or intervene and allows nature to take its course. You will see life and you might see death, but this is nature at her finest." right under a video of a chick being rescued in extraordinary fashion.

The camera crew did not do anything. It was the department of natural resources that permitted the intervention. imagine many Democratic posters there, e-mailed Florida authorities and demanded action on their part. It might have to do with the state of Florida's tourist business. they do not want any more bad press. They have released dirty water from Lake O pouring down the river, and darkening the beaches of Sanibel Island as well as FMB making tourists think it is toilet water, with dead fish and red tide all around Last year we watched an eaglet die in the nest and get eaten by it's sibling when the parents fed it to it a few days later. Chat members were not happy about no interference then, and then the cannibalism, which moderators forewarned would occur. Remember this is not a live feed of your non-favorite predator, which will remain nameless here, so sit back and relax

Remember this is not a live feed of your non-favorite predator, which will remain nameless here, so sit back and relax I'm not complaining about the intervention. I think it's a good thing. But obviously if there's a problem they think they can fix, they (or the USFWS on their behalf) do intervene. They should just admit that in their disclaimer. "Eagles are wild birds and anything can happen in the wild. The Southwest Florida Eagle Camera (SWFEC) does not interfere or intervene and allows nature to take its course. You will see life and you might see death, but this is nature at her finest. intervene to prevent nature from taking its course, because why not? Do you want to watch a cute baby eagle die of sepsis in real time? We thought not." Also: Agreeing with you and mmhmm that some of the chatters are a wee bit too emotionally invested in the feed.

Update! The eaglets are really growing fast. M-15 has been an excellent provider and kept the eaglets in food comas with all the fresh food. They are just about the size of your tom turkey at Thanksgiving now. The drama has been pretty low key with all the food available. They are noisy. You can hear them when visiting the nest chirping away. The weather is to be sunny and in the mid to high eighties this week, so I imagine there will be a lot of panting and spread eagled eaglets in the nest this week trying to keep cool.

Great article! I would think this bird would not be released into the wild again. Looks like it is doing well, but getting a little too old to hold her own against other birds.

Well, we are fast approaching the end of the nesting season for the young ones. E7 has been branching for about a week, and will soon be fledging. E8 will not be far behind. There has been a lot of food this year, so the sibling fighting has been minimal. The young ones look as large as the adult male.

E7 has officially fledged and taken first flight. E8 is still in the branch hopping stage. The season is fast coming to an end here. On a side note, the development I am in in Florida is building out their last section of homes this summer. It happens to be bordering a "preserve area" in the development that has had an eagle nest that had been active for a few years (no development could be done in the immediate area) Last year the pair was around off and on, but never actually nested in the tree. Just visited it. Fall of 2015 they did not come back. DR Horton approached state and federal officials to get the nest marked inactive. I guess it was. People are arguing that point now. The Eagles did come back mid January, have been staying in the immediate area, fishing in our ponds, etc, but never laid any eggs. DR Horton has now leveled the property, brought in fill to elevate the lots to get to the 8 foot flood stage level. Residents approached DR Horton about buying the lot closest to the nest. The nest is actually across the pond from the lots, but probably less than 300 feet away from the lot. Horton offered to sell the lot to the hoa or any person interested in preserving the lot which contains slash pine perch trees on the lot the eagles use. Cost is $80,000 Horton said they would not add the profit of the house they are losing that they will not build on the lot. Problem is, there is no garentee the Eagles will use the site next year after they build the homes on the entire loop of road. COSTS: $80,000 lot $2,300 property tax, empty lot a year $4,000 yr hoa fee-even the empty lots have to pay this. $1,800 a yr CDD fee that pays for the sewer/water/road construction bond, maybe 12 years to go on this If PRIVATE homeowners bought it we would probably need liability insurance for injury, etc. If hoa bought it, it would fall under our insurance contract now. DR Horton wants a response by the end of the month as they are applying for a building permit. They broke ground on two lots at the other end of the street today, laying the forms for the concrete, so we know they mean business. The irony of all this, is across the street from our development our homeowners association is involved in putting a direct access ramp to the Caloosahatchee river leveling about four acres of brush, pine and wild palm trees, and no one in the development complained about the birds and small animals being pushed out because boat owners liked the idea of putting in the water right where they live...... I get really mixed emotions about all of this. There were pine trees with 15 inch diameter and larger that were leveled. Homeowners have known for ten years eventually those lots would be developed. To be honest, after watching the Pritchett eagles on Bayshore drive and how close they live to all the urban noise, plus the highway traffic right there, I think these eagles would be used to people living a few hundred feet away.

Missed a day at the nest and had some excitement. The nest partially collapsed yesterday in the afternoon. The eaglets are fine, and peering over their new cliff checking it out. Good thing it happened now that they are about to leave the nest anyway. Now we have to wait and see if the parents will fix the nest, or abandon it next year for a new site. My money is on they will repair it, but it does look rather bad to me.

Today I have been watching the two eaglets hopping together and wingersizing, going to different branches. E7 has flown around the area for days now, but E8 has settled into a lot of wingersizing on the branches. It has looked like it would take it's first flight today, but so far it is a no. The season is about finished here. Soon the eaglets will fly off to learn how to fish and hunt, and also abandon their birth area.
