debt | previous balance | new balance | difference | Fed SL | $110,396.31 | $109,559.76
| $836.55
| Private SL | $8,229.97 | $8,177.85 | $52.12
| Owe IRS | unknown | $6,384.25 | 0 |
Pers loan $1,880.00 $1,920.00 $40 total $126,041.86
ok - depressing update!!!
Not that I didn't know it was coming, got the new numbers on what I owe the IRS and also adding a personal loan here to keep track of that. I've made a big payment on the IRS but it didn't show in their statement, but I don't want to put that payment up here until it is cleared, new interest included etc. I've been keeping this all in different buckets in my head, but want to pool them and work on it all together.
It was about a $100 penalty on the IRS and $75 interest. Not too terrible! but of course, another stupid tax for me.
Just as a foreshadowing....I may increase the personal loan to try to 0 out the IRS debt as quickly as I can, or take on some CC debt as I juggle this. One thing I need to do is to restructure debt and do some home maintenance that is *once again* on the back burner due to unexpectedly owning the IRS so much. I want to look into home equity or cash out refi on the mortgage, and I think that owing money to the IRS is a huge red flag in that process, so I want to get rid of that as quickly as I can.
Personal loan is on the down low, a real personal loan and off the books, and I'm paying $20 interest/month per verbal agreement.
so - my pay off order of operations are:
1) IRS (may increase personal loan and/or result in carrying short term CC debt) 2) Any CC debt accrued
3) personal loan 4) private student loan Then I will break down the federal student loans by interest rate, and start with highest interest rate and try to knock those out one by one.... I've certainly dug myself a pretty hole here! ok - I'm going a little crazy here. I wanted to update to August payments, but they have come out of bank, but not posted to SLs as yet. That is frustrating but ok. However, my most recent post on this was June 29th - meaning I skipped my July payment going through - which frustrating but ok. But looking at the balance, it is on August 5th 109,571.02 for the fed SLs. So - Everything paid to principal, and then more, from my July payment is added to interest. That can't be. Even if this was post July payment, that would be really depressing. Which is can't be as posted in June. Ach - so confused!! and can't puzzle it out right now, must dash to work. This was going to be my bright spot on a Monday/back to work, now - poopy!

Ok, I must have not been looking at the thousand column yesterday, only the hundreds. On the other hand, I'm not paying off 1k/month in student loans, but the June 29th update include most of the accrued interest for the July payment. Which leads me to my next student loan rant: Interest is accrued daily! I check the balance quickly last night, and the payments had been reflect, this AM the balance is up by about $15. What a sucker punch!! I have put in place holders for 2 credit cards, as I need to transfer the personal loan onto that, and may also do the IRS debt onto a credit card to get that cleared. Makes me super nervous to owe the IRS!! Plus I put some extra columns JIC (boy are tables hard to work with here!! Any tips appreciated. No pasting from Excel?? WTFruitcake!). Going to see if tracking a few months out helps, going to maybe next year do columns for each month to see longer term progress. All told, about 3k paid down over 2 months so I'm thinking this is real progress! It was difficult to add in the other debts with the SLs, as now I am just drowning in debt. Well - I guess I was drowning with just the SLs too, but it hurt to add in on top of that. But, also freeing! But this is it, aside from mortgage. And I'm addressing it. So, there you have it!

Same thing with Column, add a column to the right or the left, or delete the column you're in. You can also delete the whole table. If you have a Mac laptop without left-click and right-click options, you can bring up the same options by clicking on a cell and then clicking the mousepad using two fingers.

A pending charge showed up on my CC for siriusXM which reminded me to call them and change my package. I don't need the one with sports and comedy. Just music is fine. It's a difference of ~$70/yr.

You can get SiriusXM for $5 per month every 6 months if you are willing to play the game of calling them every 6 months.
It's the Select package. You have to call before it runs out or they will charge you.

I call Customer Care and tell them I want the $5 per month for 6 months deal. They usually say they can't do that, so that's why I call it a came. There is a lot of being put on hold while they check with someone, etc. and I am prepared to turn it off if they won't give me the deal. Since I learned of this and make the call, I have yet to be turned down.
You must keep track of the date because they will charge the full amount if you let it go past that time. I call about 10 days earl.
You do pay for the 6 months all at once, but it's worth it.
I had paid monthly for years before a friend told me about this. Just be nice and stick to your resolve. That attitude has not let me down yet.
I don't need the sports or news channels, but I think I have them.
Presently I am saving more money because I used to pay for the car and the house, so two radios. Never found a good place in the house with good reception so I signed up for streaming. You can now get streaming for free with an active radio--even at the $5 per month rate. Will see what happens with that when the 6 months is up. They did refund 3 months worth when I stopped paying for streaming.
I can still stream and do but I no longer pay for it.

You have to call before it runs out or they will charge you. The Select is $15.99/mo per their website. It gives an option upgrade to Select for an additional $5 +fees. I have the Essential which is $8/mo.

nidena I have Select for $5 per month because of the phone calls. I have to have Select to get the Beatles Channel and it's a must have for me. I refuse to pay that much and I am having the Beatles Channel for $5 per month.

That way you don't have to redo the table every time, you can just plug in the updated numbers and post.

Update to Race #2 and #3! $864.85 paid off in the last 2 weeks!! This update is a whole week late, but I have been swamped and am just squeezing in a few minutes to get it posted. I have been covering for a coworker who is out and it's been totally nuts.....unfortunately that also coincided with the first week with the new baby puppy! And since I work from home it's been a tornado around here! She is our 3rd girl and she is adjusting really well, but no matter how good they are, puppies are a lot of work! Love her to pieces already and our 2 other girls are having fun playing with her.
One of my softball teams won a state championship and one of MO's teams won a roughrider championship (consolation bracket champ)! This is my 2nd state championship and it was very exciting!
We have been doing good with cash flowing some bigger expenses even though we did have to take some money out of savings for medical/dental bills and also for the new puppy. Will have more bills coming up for her when it is time for her to get spade.
We are also really making it our mission to get the debt below the next $1000 mark every 2 weeks, so we threw another extra $200 on Rental #1's mortgage this time. MO has always been on board with paying off the debt, but I really see his interest peek when he gets to go in and pays an extra couple hundred dollars and actually sees the balance go down right at that moment when he gets his receipt. It helps him a lot to visually see that progress instead of just a "never ending" amortization spreadsheet.
Savings is at $15,300. We do have some cash "savings" that isn't accounted for anywhere right now. That may go towards rental updates or may go into savings.
Celebrations for this update: -$864.85 paid off in the last 2 weeks!! -Race #2 went under the next $1000 mark!! -Total Debt went under the next $1000 mark for the 5th update in a row!!

I've got an update to post in the next couple days, it's not good. had a few things go on a card bc I forgot the bills were coming. not a valid excuse, but it will have to do for right now. steady state is still good, it's the one offs that I need to be better about. I am still putting 99% of my day to day stuff on debit card, so that's a win.
the reason I'm posting tonight with no tagline update is bc i got notified of my "stock" grant for 2019 today. remember that unexpected $800 I got in early June? well, I'll get a full share for FY2019. 1/3 of it vests next June, and that will be at least $7k pre-tax. 😯 I figure I can keep a few hundred to have a little fun, and throw the rest at whatever the current snowball is by that point. woot!

UPDATE Chicg [2] - 8/14/19, $8,996 (11/7/14, 4217.34 MPT266)
Discover $8,996 ($500 less than last month)
Boring update. I had to add some charges to a cc...I got sick and ended up with an urgent care bill, several trips to CVS for medicines, instacart for groceries and medicine since I felt too crappy to go shopping by myself (especially without a car), another vet visit, etc. And my mom is visiting this weekend and I know I'll need the cc to pay for a dinner or Ubers (when I'd normally walk/bus), etc. I'll add those Chase charges to my debt total next month and then just work on paying them off. I also need to revisit my budget, I've been spending a little more this summer on social events and it finally seems to have caught up to me. Need to reign it in!
Nidena - I haven't looked into grad assist jobs but I'm definitely open to something part time!

Shoutouts!
shanendoah- Nice update! Looking forward to celebrating with you soon!
ByeDebtBye- Nice looking numbers!
Maryland- Woo hoo, over 80% paid off!!
Rukh O’Rourke- I’m not sure what you were asking back in your post, but some people have multiple races because they break up their debt into chunks and race a chunk at a time. Like first I did credit cards, then student loans & a car loan, then other misc debt, etc. And over $3k for your first update is pretty amazing, no matter how you slice it!
Nidena- Great update. Hope the surgery goes smoothly. When are you listing the house for sale?
Livininup- Wow, fantastic update!
nooccar- Sounds like a plan! Keep enjoying!
ners- Good update!
Nikiz628- I’ll get your starting total updated as well. Congrats on the first payment!
Banker Gurl- Great updates and fantastic progress!
Steph08- Knocking on the door of 80% paid off, that’s awesome!
Pay-no-interest- Yippee, closer and closer!
chicg- Hope you’re feeling better soon.

In July you asked for help to keep you accountable. Waiting patiently for the update.

I appreciate that, thank you! I actually posted the non-numbers update on the day I should have been posting the numbers. oops. I went and grabbed balances for everything today, and ugh. anyway, onward and upward. er, well, downward on the balances.
chiver78: 8/17/19 $127,168.06 (2/13/19 $121,788.98)
