Serious this time [6]: 8/31/18, $0 (3/31/18 $13,825 R172) I made it. Hurray for me! Sometime this weekend I'll post how many races I've done, and how much money I've raced. There was some debt along the way that wasn't raced, so I can't include that as I have no way of going back and looking at the amounts. I've raced the overwhelming majority of it though, so it will be interesting to see.
What's left? Car payment at 0.9% interest under the Rule of 78s. I'd save little interest by racing that debt, and there's no reason I can see to pay it off early. It has three more years to go. The car has 16,000 miles on it. I'm sure the car will live long after the scheduled payments end. And then there's the ginormous mortgage. I'm treating it as something along the lines of rent. It's a cost of being alive. And there's a tax benefit that comes along with it. As long as I live I will have a mortgage or rent to pay, and at this stage it's more important to bank my extra cash than it is to pay down either the car or the mortgage. I may change my mind along the way, though, and then I'll begin Race 7.

August was a great month!!! I have two new zeros I got some unexpected funds this month which was well timed because my car had to go to the garage and while I had budgeted for $500 the final bill ended up being $975 but I was able to cash flow it. I also had enough left over to pay off Mom a month early and the HOA Arrears 4 months early. I am excited to see these two go cause emotionally these two have haunted me the most.

Last month I mentioned my job was giving everyone raises due to the increased performance of the company and everyone sticking with them through the recession. Well, some people got raises and I was not one of them. I am going to sit down this week-end and evaluate what I am doing with this company cause I had working hard, putting in extra time (unpaid) which means I am not spending as much time as I could be with my children. I was promised a pay increase two summers ago which has not materialized. When I spoke to my bosses about it they said it was coming (this was prior to some people getting a pay increase) and I just need to be patient. When the raises for others happened I spoke to them again and I was again told it was coming. I asked to get that in writing and they both refused to do that so I have some decisions to make.
On a happier note have a great week-end and holiday. I will be spending mine on the beach

The good news is that I will have a two new air conditioners, a new water heater, and a new garbage disposal in four weeks. The bad news is that I'll be adding another line item to my race. I did get quite a large discount because I'm having so much work done at one time: Rather than having to allocate four days of work over however long a time period, it's all being done in one fell swoop so instead of 32 hours of labor (x however many on the crews), it'll be only eight hours.
I'm still waiting to receive confirmation for my LTC Insurance cancellation and still waiting--probably another two months--for the federal and state reimbursements for my tax overpay. In the meantime, I'm trying very hard to not give into whims to stop by Walgreens for ice cream and magazines and to also not piss away money in any other multitude of ways that it might happen. One success: I chose to not utilize the 65% discount that we had at the store last week. I don't NEED any new clothes. It doesn't matter that I'd be saving 65%, I'd still be spending 35%.

Congratulations, seriousthistime! livinitup, that really stinks. I hope you find something that will completely blow you away with how they appreciate you. nidena, I struggle sometimes with impulse buying things I don't need. You're exactly right about that sale at the store. Look at what it will cost, not what it will save. If you need something, the great sale is a perfect time to get it. If you're only buying because of the sale, you've lost money.

I'm not doing an update. Just sharing the new (to be added at the end of Sept) debt configuration and budget in order to get some input.
Mortgage 3.5% $1087.81 is the monthly payment $1100 is the payment that I make HRV 5.49% $499.57 is the monthly payment $500 is the payment that I make New stuff 9.9% $296.09 is the expected payment $300 is the payment that I would make
Other bills: Water/Sewer/Trash $40 Internet (Verizon DSL) $56.99 (Fios is the only other option where I live and that would increase the bill) Electric $92 (this is Budget Billing and resets every January based upon prior year's usage) Natural Gas $69 (Budget Billing Sept-May, then $13.50 Jun/Jul/Aug) Faith Contributions $31 Car Insurance $65 (this was for the Jeep that I sold; my account is still in transition until the Sept payment comes out on the 4th. I anticipate it to be about the same amount) Life Insurance $35 Savings Tracker Transfer $60 (the bank transfers random amounts between $2-9 when my account balance is above $100)
Groceries/Dining Out YTD Monthly Avg $337.93 (These weren't separate line items until April; June and Aug were slim because I went out of state and paid for those things on my CC) Misc YTD Monthly Avg $304.44 Gas YTD Monthly Avg $77 (In June I started paying for this with my CC for extra points) Visa YTD Montly Avg $1994 (this took the beating because I paid for my roof repair, inspections for house refi, and federal taxes with it; I'm expecting almost $5000 back from state and federal as a result of H&R Block's relook; current balance is $12180)
What May's Misc looked like (the hash marks are what I put when it posts to my checking account): Delaware Today 14.97--
Acorn Books 12--
ATM 10--
Kelly 60--
BC Landscapes 70--
Walgreens 27.04--
Yarn & Bone 24.58--
Acorn Books 7.24--
Ollie's 31.97--
Outdoor Rec 29.7--
Walgreens 6.83--
ATM 20--
Walgreens 22.56--
My Income: Military Pension $1669 Disability $1692 Housing Stipend $1631 (this will be continuous for the next 20 months or so with a few months prorated because of school breaks) Various part-time jobs $150
Savings/Roths LTC fund $2779 (this will go towards CC when I get the canx confirmation) Moving 2020 $429.26 (This is what Savings Tracker transfers into and where I put my points-to-cash conversions from my CC) EF $2927 (a few transfers in the past couple months) Traditional Roth $11141 (no deposits since I converted in 2016)
I welcome any and all input.

As I mentioned above, Here's a recap my journey to get to almost debt-free status (not counting car and mortgage). Here's where I've been. Serious this time: 1/12/08, $61,816 Serious this time [2]: 12/9/2012, $11,021 Serious this time [3]: 3/29/2013 $6956 Serious this time [4]: 3/21/2015 $33,571 Serious this time [5] 12/9/2017 $5,577 Serious this time [6]: 3/31/18 $13,825 There was a lot of backsliding. And 0% balance transfers. (Including the time the bank I had two 0% life-of-the-loan balance transfers didn't like that life-of-the-loan part and tripled my minimum payments on both balance transfers to get me to pay them off more quickly. ) So don't give up, Racers. We all start someplace, and we all end up someplace. The path is never the same for any two of us, and it's certainly not a linear downward trend.

Update! $19,900.00 (New debt total: 08/28 $388,835)I set some 2018 goals in an earlier post and am making good progress with meeting them. My parents gave DH and I some money that I am using to add to what I have saved to pay for a new roof and then pay down the mortgage (that was last month). We also have a housemate who is renting out a room/bathroom in our basement and his monthy rent is equal to our monthly mortage payment. So, I'm adding his rent to what I already pay for our monthly mortgage to "double down" on paying off the mortgage.
I am also trying to reduce my expenses with eating out. We got in the bad habit of eating out for dinner and it started to add up. So, I'm trying to make meals ahead and freeze them. Today I made a huge batch of manicotti and have 3 dinners plus 3 lunches worth of manicotti in the freezer ready to go on those nights I'm not in the mood to cook. I also have 4 meals of another favorite meal of ours ready to go on the nights I don't feel like cooking.
Goals met:
- Paid off Sept quarterly taxes
- Mortgage is under $20,000 at $19,900
- Money to pay off the new roof is saved and waiting for when the roof gets installed and we get the bill
Another thing that happened this month was I finally closed out my Wells Farge account where I keep my "rental house" money for all of transcations related to the rental house. Wells Fargo made me keep a minimum of $1,500 in the account to avoid checking fees and I got tired of that. So, I switched to a bank that doesn't charge banking fees to have a checking account. I decided to take the $1,770 that was in that account and 1) pay off the Sept and Jan quarterly state income taxes I owe for the rental house, and 2) use the remaining to pay off more on my home mortgage. This money hasn't made it to my account yet and so once it is in there, I'll put more money toward our mortgage. I'll post an update when that happens. I got a cold/allergies so I wasn't able to go on the big biking/camping trip I wanted to go on this weekend. But, I got work done yesterday and did a short bike ride. I'll do a little more work today to get ahead for next week. I plan to meet a friend for lunch tomorrow so at least I'll get out of town for a little bit. I hope everyone is having a great Labor Day weekend!

I’m glad August is gone. I have a problem. I’m praying that the exterminator will be able to help me out. There’s a ground squirrel under my cement slab (basically under my house). It has to go.

EF = $151.19 I am very annoyed that I didn't realize how close I was to breaking the $250,000 barrier. I hope that next month's update is below that threshold. I owe my architect a payment, so it's not guaranteed that my balance will continue to move in the right direction. -movinonup You are so close to the $250,000! Just think of next month and breaking that barrier. Kudos for getting close on having cc#3 paid off so you can get rid of the 20% interest! Are you going to work on getting rid of #2 and possibly moving to using CC#5 instead?

Are you going to work on getting rid of #2 and possibly moving to using CC#5 instead? CC#2 is actually current spending. Once an accouunt gets in my table, it stays there. There will be a balance shown again next month, but the statement balance is being paid in full every month at this point. CC#3 is the balance that I really want to pay right now. I really need to look into transferring CC#4 or CC#5 to CC#1. The offer is not great, but any balance transfer offer will save me some money. I am delaying my decision because past balance transfer offers were better. STUPID! As long as the balance transfer is going to save me money, it's worthwhile. Even if I pay 5% to transfer $5,000 @0% for a year, if the current rate is more than 5%, I will save money. OK, I am done publicly chastizing myself. Have a great night everyone. =movinonup

quick update on myself. still no numbers.
one more move posted yesterday. will be setting up the next move in the next day or so. after that posts, I can then consolidate at least two smaller balances onto one promotional card and start making some actual progress.

Update to Race #2, and #3!!
$896.03 paid off in the last 2 weeks!!!
I'm about a week late posting since we were on vaca, and then recovering from vaca. Here is my update for 8/31/18.
Vegas was good, lots of fun, we were not winners, but had a good time trying! We got home late on Friday, 8/31/18, and I was soooooo happy we had that long weekend to recover from 5 days in Vegas. I would have never had the energy to get back to work if we only had a day in-between.
We are still dealing with things with Rental #1. The renter we had paid September rent, and is now moved out. So at least September is cleared and no issues. We have someone "lined up" for October 1, but she has not signed the lease yet or paid the deposit. We also agreed to lower the rent from $1000 to $850 as that is what she can afford, and we haven't had any other serious interest, so the previous tenant will have to pay the $150 difference until the lease is up (we will subtract that from their deposit before returning it to them). I know the new potential renter personally from selling to her many, many times on FB and we would like her as a renter as it would help us both out, but we can't hold the place without a lease and a deposit and since she won't get her deposit on her current place back until after she moves out of there at the end of Sept., she is having a hard time coming up with the deposit. Ideally we would find a renter that is more financially stable and could pay the deposit with no issues, but unfortunately that is not the case for many people and our town is only like 3000 people so options are limited for renters. We are giving her till tomorrow to pay the deposit and sign the lease before we will need to start trying to show it again. Really hoping she can figure something out.
We paid for our propane to be filled this week, we are going to hold off as long as possible on turning on the heat, so hoping that will last all winter.
Savings is going good for now, I need to update my numbers after coming back from vaca, but should be right around $15K.
Celebrations for this update:
-$896.03 paid off in the last 2 weeks!! -We passed $20K paid off on Race #2! -Total Debt went under $490K! -Total Debt went under the next $1000 mark for the 6th update in a row!! (That is a record for me!!)

Update! $18,300.00 (New debt total: 08/28 $388,835)
The money I got from closing my bank account for my rental house showed up and I have used it to put down more money on the principle of my mortgage. With this payment, I've now paid 95% of my total debt...woo hoo!
I'm regretting teaching this online course as an overload -- the grading associated with this class is a lot! That will be my day tomorrow and Saturday -- I hope I can get efficient at it. I'll just look at this extra income as a way to get that much more of my mortgage paid down. Then, my hope is that I will stop feeling compelled to take on extra work to make more money.
I hope all is well for everyone.

Update! $18,000.00 (New debt total: 08/28 $388,835)
I had some extra money left over after I paid off my credit card, allocated funds to different savings accounts and so I put another $300 towards my principle to my mortgage.

Congratulations Minnesota and Serious! You've both been so helpful and encouraging over the years!
I don't have an official update, but I'll be paying off my Discover card with my next payment, a little ahead of schedule. Unfortunately my Chase card (the one I use for unexpected charges or groceries right before payday, etc) took a big hit. Many know that I have two expensive senior kitties with chronic illnesses (18 years!). My girl Bella passed away almost a month ago and her vet bills 1-2 months before she died and arrangements after her death were almost $2K, those went on Chase. I'm pulling a little from savings to help pay off Discover so when the payments to Discover clear I'll transfer my Chase balance for 0% interest. I'll hopefully get back to paying off Chase monthly (if I need to use it), focus on Discover, and by year end be close to having it paid off which will put me back to just one card, under $10K, and a goal of having that paid off in 2019.
Congrats to everyone making progress!
