So two weeks into the school year and DD's school has announced that it is mandatory for every child to have a laptop. I know have to pay $200 for a laptop for a 4th Grader. Is it even necessary?!? Sigh, I will get the laptop from DD's education fund but I still annoyed. On top of that the gasket on my freezer broke and I had to spend $200 to fix that. I was able to take that from our savings so the EF is still intact. I must admit I am fortunate to find the part on island. If not I would've had to buy a new refrigerator and they start at $1,000. The week can only go up from here. Yay that you had the money in savings cover both of those surprises. You are doing well and hopefully your island is out of the path of Irma.

livinitup- That seems like an odd thing to require 2 weeks into the year- did the school give a reason for this?

Hi Chiver. Do you want to add the new debt to the starting totals? That way you get credit for paying off the additional debt and it might not feel so overwhelming. hmm.....I probably should, even if I personally continue to keep track of that original starting point. that number is burned into my memory. Chiver - just add it in the tag line and keep your table as is. That way you still have a visual of that original starting point.

If he feels laptops are required, then he should figure out a way to get the students their laptops. That's a hefty expense to put on anybody...to include the school...but a principal shouldn't just thrust such a requirement on folks with such short notice. That's something that you say "Hey, you guys have a great summer break. In the fall, we'll want each student to have their own laptops." You know...three months lead time so that folks can actually save up some money. smh.

Our school district mandated that the middle school and high school students would all have tablets. The district provides them and the parents have to sign a responsibility contract. By 2020, they plan to have tablets for all grade levels. I think it is a bit ridiculous, but mostly I am glad that my kids are out of school. I would hate to bear the responsibility for 5 tablets. This seems to be the direction schools are headed in as I have heard from parents in other districts that their school-age children are being issued some type of computer device. Having said all that, it was very unrealistic of your child's principal to expect every household to purchase a compute for their kid!

Somebody should have pointed out to this principal that the "M" in STEM stands for mathematics, and one of the basic uses of math is budgeting. Have enough money to pay bills less $200 = not enough money for paying bills. It is great that your savings helped you out, but what about those who don't have any reserves? It defies logic to assume that every family can afford such an amount at the drop of a hat, or the whim of a principal...

It's funny that you said that cause the Principal's degree is in Mathematics and he was a math teacher prior to going into Administration. I agree with everyone it is very unrealistic to expect everyone to come up with $200 at a drop of a hat. The school has not said what they plan to do for parents who do not pay by the end of September. There should be a compromise given the lack of notice. I would have preferred for them to incorporate the computer fee into tuition as you can pay that over 10 months and an additional $20 a month would have been a whole lot easier to swallow.

Right now 3rd grade and up receive a school issued iPad (with a responsibility waiver and annual "tech fee") that they can take home. K-2 use them in the classroom, but cannot take them home.

Update to Race #1, #2 and #4!$904.77 paid off in the last 2 weeks!!!
So happy that getting under $500K for total debt is getting more and more achievable! Savings is going good and payments are rolling us down quickly! So many great celebrations on this update!
In not so fun news - My car (the vehicle we both try to use the most for low gas mileage) that we just spent something like $1000 on in repairs is down again. We just drove it out of town, 4 hrs each way, all in one day, and it ran great and was totally fine. Then two days later we get in to go to dinner and the power steering is out (again) and smoking. We just had that repaired about 4 weeks ago. MO is going to talk to the mechanic and see if we can get it fixed for free since their repair wasn't satisfactory. If not I think it's time to say goodbye for good. We have 3 other vehicles, so we won't need to deal with any replacement costs, but still sad to see my car of 9 years bite the dust.
Also we decided to do an impromptu trip to Laughlin at the end of Sept. MO starts coaching in October and that takes up all of his time till March, so we decided to get in one more trip this year. We go on a lot of group and family trips, this time it's just going to be the two of us, so that will be nice. Celebrations for this update:

I had been posting in the savers thread when I was saving up the down payment for my house and I found it very motivating to share my progress. We moved in June and put down 20% so that goal has been accomplished. Now I'd like to turn my focus to my student loan. I graduated in 2001 and it's still hanging on because I took the 30 year amortization when it was offered at 2.5%. At that time I was making $28k and my husband was disabled and not working so the long time horizon and lower min payment was a blessing. Since then, I've been stepping up my monthly payment but also kind of ignoring it otherwise because it's at 2.5%. Now, I'm just ready for it to be done. I currently owe $7567 and have been paying $150/month. The loan administrator website is archaic so there's no good way to send in additional payments that vary each month (I have to call and have them send me forms via snail mail to make sure additional payments go to principal) so I'll just be stockpiling $$ until I have enough to just mail them a final check. At this time I have $2633 saved so I will reflect $7567-$2633 = $4934 as the amount I owe. This is the only non-mortgage debt that I currently have. Once it is paid off, I will shift my focus to beefing up the emergency fund (currently $25k) and additional mortgage payments (attempt to shorten 30 yr to 15 yr).
Goal: Payoff by the end of the year.
azucena: 9/15/17 $4934 (9/15/17 $4934 page 160)

Update: 9-18-17 21831.13 (5-13-09 53883.21 p.331)
Long time, no update....sorry about that. Seems like no matter what we do, we can't make any progress. I know it looks like progress, but just feels like moving money around. The debts I am racing have gone down, but other seem to have gone up. I know I should restart with all my totals, but would love to DESTROY these first!!!
Happy racing everyone!

Still maintaining a 0 balance on the credit card. I count any balance that can be paid off in full as "0" so... Still waiting for the VA to pay my school tuition and send me my housing stipend and book allowance. And waiting for the LTC insurance company to withdraw my annual payment. Isn't this month the WIRR (as a whole) anniversary month? What is it, 11, 12 years now?

At $400 a month, it's our 2nd highest bill (after our mortgage). I could do so much with that $$$! It's still too early to tell if we will be able to throw additional money at it or not. I have zero clue what our insurance premium will be once open enrollment starts Nov 1st. My health and dental providers are both exiting the marketplace...so that's awesome. *heavy on the sarcasm* It was already slim pickins for my area anyway, so this should be fun.

Attn Captains: I have changed my starting balance to reflect the additional legal bills that are now on the Discover IT card. Luckily, that card not only has a 0% APR, they actually had a 0% fee for balance transfers. So while my total balance has gone up, I did make almost $700 in progress on the Citi Diamond card (and they've increased the limit on that card, because more credit is exactly what I need   and will make more progress in about a week on the Chase Disney card. Now I just need to figure out when my payment date will be for the Discover IT card, so I can budget for that.

I am at just under 50% paid, but a lot of that was being able to pay back that $15k right away at the start. Now we're at the slower roll. However, the majority of the big legal bills are done (though I do have a court date at the end of November), so instead of adding to debt, I should now be able to pay it off at a steady rate. I did switch which credit card I am using as my primary card (for rewards reasons), and it gets paid at a different time of the month than the previous main card, so I've to kind of rebalance how things get paid. In addition, I just got a 2% raise. Today was the first paycheck it was on, but I also had to pay for parking passes (pre-tax) out of this paycheck, so I'm not actually certain what my new paychecks will look like. But that should be figured out next month, and hopefully I'll be settling into tortoise like steady payments, after getting started like the hare.

ATTENTION CAPTAINS:
MuffyintheRed 9/24/2017 $65,395.38 (9/9/08 $130,444.32 S37, SU395, PRO77, 81, 86.137) NC
Paid off since joining: $65048.94 Percentage: 50.1%
Paid off this month: $-205.74
CU Savings - $1345.78
Bad month, we only paid off $205.74, but the bills from our trip to Wisconsin came in.
Next month I may have to add a new medical bill, we will see how much is covered by insurance. DH has his (hopefully) last MRI for his prostate cancer. We go to Duke on Wednesday and get the results on Monday. Unfortunately our appt. on Monday is at 8 a.m. so we have to stay overnight in Durham cause it takes 2 to 2.5 hours to drive from our house to Duke. But it was the only appt. for 3 weeks cause doctor was going on vacation. So we took it. Only one who suffers from this is the dog. Where we board her isn't open on Sunday, so she as to be dropped off on Saturday and stay the extra time. And of course we get to pay for the extra days!!!!!
Things will get better. We have to get more paid off before DH retires. June 30th of 2018!!!!

Well, my dryer gave an agonized squeal of impending death the other night. It sounds very much like a loose belt. Being that it's just over ten years old, and that's the average lifespan of a washer or dryer, I'm going to just get a replacement machine. It's been a very good machine. It started chirping a couple months ago but I think it went over the edge since my roommate moved in. His very first load was, I think, his whole wardrobe. I didn't notice how much he had loaded up the machine until I went to remove some debris that I saw through the little dryer window. Being that I'm not his maid and I really didn't care whether his clothes got dry or not, I made no changes other than removing the trash. Want to guess how long they actually ran before the dryer said "Eff it, I'm done running this cycle. Try again, later"? (This was a month ago) Anyhow...three hours. That shit ran for three hours and STILL wasn't dry. That's how full he had packed the dryer. Any brand recommendations? My price range will be $500-$900, before any coupons or discounts.
