I read the OP to say that the OP is a carnivore who wants to eat less healthy for the sake of "variety". My suggestion is start exploring some more meat options- especially organic, grass-fed beef; butter, real full fat cheeses, healthy wild caught salmon, tuna, and other goodies of the sea. I have eaten every type of meat you just mentioned, as well as just about every other kind of meat I have heard of. I am bored of meat. I eat meat two or three times a day. I want to find another source of protein so I don't have to eat meat every day. I am bored to fucking death of meat. Do you like eggs?

No progress. This thread totally discouraged me and made me feel like an idiot, so I will just keep eating what I have always eaten. I should know better than to try anything new.

Some of us made suggestions on this thread. And I know it got off track but don't let that stop you. It's quite easy to go meat free even if only occasionally. But not faultling you for giving up.

Don't let the nay-sayers discourage you, thyme! Variety is a good thing, not a bad thing. There are a lot of ways to add proteins to a vegan diet, but you're not talking about "going vegan". You're just trying to change it up a bit and try new things. Do it! Beans, seeds (like poppy seed - add to salad dressings), leafy green veggies, seitan (a meat substitute made with wheat gluten), edamame, chickpeas (hummus - yum!) and green peas, nuts, quinoa ... there are lots of sources of protein that aren't meats, and lots of recipes on the internet that use these items for delicious dishes. Experiment a little, girl!

Just reading this thread made me hungry. Thanks Thyme! I was a vegatarian for 16 years and many of our favorite recipes are from those days and are meatless. One of my things was adding legumes to a grain which makes it a complete protein. That is why people for thousands of years have combined things like bread and beans or pasta and beans. It really is a complete protein. So I make a pasta salad for lunch and add kidney beans or chickpeas. For me I would put it over a green salad and let it "dress" the salad but if you like your parts of the meal you could just put it on the side. Don't give up, and put the pretend doctors/anthropoligists on this thread on ignore.

I use those, poppy seeds, sunflower seeds, lotsa nuts ... there are all sorts of things one can do to add proteins to vegan meals.

Have you tried Eastern Indian foods? I swear what those folks managed to do with veggies, grains, legumes, and spices is obscenely good! recipes.sparkpeople.com/recipe-detail.asp?recipe=1368636This is soooooo good! I add a little extra oil/stock to make it juicy and throw in a can of diced tomatoes once the onions are carmelized. God, now I want this for lunch!

I posted my Indian spiced lentils recipe a few years ago (in the vegetarian recipes section) and I make them all the time. Lentils never get old (to me)! Thyme, I'm currently planning our menu for the week and this is what I have in mind so far: butternut squash soup (I use a Whole Foods recipe and add red curry paste and coconut milk), quinoa tacos, and teriyaki seitan with broccoli and red pepper over brown rice.
