My grandmother used to add 1/2 tsp of Cumin to her white sauce for scalloped potatoes to 'spice' them up. Could that be the ingredient you're missing?

I've seen nutmeg as the "secret ingredient"...

Tried nutmeg and bullion - haven't tried cumin but I don't think that's a spice my mom even had. I'll try nutmeg again with bullion - maybe that's it.
Thanks guys!

Mich - a few years back I found a cookbook similar to one my mom had when I was a kid. Its called The American Women's Cookbook and was published in 1935. It has recipes for everything. I'll check it for a scalloped potatoes recipe tonight and post on here if I find one.
Its very interesting to read this cookbook because it gives tips on menu planning, proper nutrition, portion sizes, types of pans to use for what and so much more.
I'm also one that eyeballs when I cook some of the dishes my mom made because I learned from watching what she was doing. My daughter has asked me to write down some of them so she'll know. Guess I need to get work on that because now when my mom cooks now, it really doesn't taste the same. She makes things much more bland now to help her control her high blood pressure.

Beer, that picture and Loop's picture would make such a great pair.
