Update: 3 NSD 15 CSD 1 Eating out day as of Sept 183catslady still on your no eating out streak...good job!!! I think that is helping me a lot too, even with my oopsie on the car things seem to be working out because this thread has me in a controlled spending state of mind Belonging to this board helps me feel proud of my non-spending and controlled spending, instead of feeling deprived...thanks gang

forwardwego--sounds like you are turning the corner from your money controlling you to you controlling your money. Kind of a heady feeling isn't it.

yes ses yes And thanks for the encouragement After I had the credit card debt paid off, I got complacent. And though I was buying with cash, the little stuff started adding up. And as you all have been saying here...it's a process. So now I'm developing my skill of separating wants vs needs. And for me what really matters is what gets paid out of which fund or account, so that my emotions about the spending are healthy. For September my goal is like you said: controlling my money instead of being controlled. And then I'll have a baseline to see if I can improve my # of NSD's while maintaining CSD's for the other days in October. DH is gradually getting on board too. Instead of eating out on Fridays, he suggested we buy a special item to cook at home and that will make Fridays special Update: 5 NSD 15 CSD 1 Eating out day as of Sept 20

Update: 13 NSDs 4 CSDs
Figure I check in now since I have a lot of correcting to do this weekend plus a few other activities and I wasn't sure when I would have time to check to check in this weekend.
Fowardwego -- Glad you are adjusting to the mindset to achieving NS/CS days. It is a process and one that does take time. I count anything that I haven't budgeted for as a spend day. I sometimes have to adjust the budget to add in some new requirement -- that is a regular item . But things like the items I purchased for school were not planned but needed to add motivation for students so that was a spend day -- not a need for me, not really a want but may help a few students step up to the plate a little more so I will take the hit. It wasn't a lot but I don't allow myself enough flexible wiggle room for things like this. I have the money to pay it off but it is not in the "correct"category. I hate spending out-of-category purchases.
Good thing I am so busy - doesn't give me time to shop. But there is that pair of black dress sandals that seems to be calling my name. Will be strong today -- who knows what tomorrow or Sunday will bring.
Now I have to get organized to start correcting those projects -- more are due next week so I have to get as much done as possible this weekend before the others come in.

Update: 14 NSDs 5 CSDs
Got all of the papers that were submitted to me corrected. Still have to put the grades into the grading program but will do that tomorrow as I have to check on a few things before releasing grades. Expecting another 125 or so more projects coming in tomorrow so I only have a brief respite before it starts up again. The good thing is that this is the most time consuming assignment to correct this semester for all of my classes so things will ease up time wise once I get through with all of them. One group is mainly done, one will be turned in this week, and the last group will just be getting their assignment this week so I have time before those hit me.
Did all of the social activities as well but only did a little housework which I have to start focusing more on. Mostly I have to vacuum and dust a few rooms. A few have to be mopped. I think I will have to resort to setting the timer and see how much I can get done with in the time limit.

Kudos on accomplishing so much moneysquirrel. I often use the timer trick for motivation too. What grade or level do you teach?

I took my granddaughter out to breakfast but that was my allowance so that doesn't count toward anything. I also did laundry and got antifreeze for the car so it was a controlled spend day.

Thanks for the reminder,3cats, I need ro make an appointment to get my car winterized. That is an expense I had completely forgotten about!
I have been spending my time putting up tomato sauce and making and freezing pesto for the winter. Still quite a bit of basil to dry, yet. I still need to launder all my summer stuff before getting my winter stuff out to see what I need to wash or hang out to freshen before winter really arrives.
It kind of makes me long for the days when my major concern was keeping up with grading all the papers. But not too much.
Moneysquirrel--I think I am going to enjoy NCIS:NOLA. For the scenery if nothing else.

ses the home-canned tomato products sound delicious. Update: 8 NSD 17 CSD 1 Eating out day as of Sept 25
We have family visiting from out-of-state, so it will be a challenge to control spending, but I think I'm in the right state of mind to manage it. I've planned to buy each of the kids a book as a souvenir, and eat out one night which will come out of my allowance money. Hope your Friday is good

Update: 19 NSDs 6 CSDs
My numbers are improving because I have been buried in correcting projects. Limited time to shop except for groceries and gas. I do have a weekend free of major correcting this weekend so I used the time to catch up on housework. Feeling better about the shape of the house. Figured I do the last of the mopping tomorrow as I am sure that I will be spilling something on the floor in the process of fixing Sunday lunch.
SES -- Glad you enjoyed it. I love the music as well as the constant food references. Both very present and important in NO. I love the fact that so many locals are included in the show. Many of the musicians, waiters, bartenders, etc. featured will be locals in the various venues in the city. A news brief on our local CBS station introduced the person that the Bekula character is based on. He is a local retired NCIS agent and is now giving advice to the tv show's production staff. Also many of the local artifacts in the TV office are things that have been purchased at local shops and from individual artists. Hope they continue to add the local flavor.
3cats -- you continue to amaze me.
forwardwego -- enjoy your company. You are doing great as a newbie to this thread.

Well, I ate out today, or rather, I ordered pizza delivered. I had to watch the kids today because my son and his wife got tickets for the Steelers game in Pittsburgh and I was elected to watch the kids. Don't get me wrong, I love watching them but I didn't get to bed until after midnight and they were going to leave at 6 am. That meant that I was to be over there at that time to be there when the baby awoke. Well they left at 7 and the baby was up. I got up at 5:30 and waited for the knock on the door. Anyway, tea and toast for breakfast after feeding the baby, tea and a turkey sandwich for lunch after feeding the baby and when I looked in the fridge for something for supper, I didn't find much because everything was frozen except those noodles that you add hot water to and their seasoning. That did it for me so I ordered pizza to be delivered.

ses: They were given the tickets because the person that had them couldn't go. As far as I know, they didn't pay for them.

How about "Optimistic October"? My first full month here helped me do what I knew I needed to do: track and control spending, & pay for things from their designated funds instead of "robbing Peter to pay Paul". Paying off debt was my driving goal, but it is made possible by controlled spending. And building savings helps prevent relapse, so I joined the savers' thread too. In October I'd like to keep my/our eating outs to 2 or less, and improve my number of NSD's. The accountability here has helped very much... Thank you veteran members. Any lurkers who are watching... now is a good time to join this thread.

Terrific Name!! It is up and running just waiting for us.
I went over budget $29 this month. But considering I had company a couple of weekends ago that isn't bad.
