We'd do the same, Busy. If mowing the lawn or gardening, house was locked.
If we were entertaining in the back yard (BBQ or sitting out by the fire pit in the evening, house was locked - if you're invited, you come into the yard through the gate
Doors were/are always locked, even when home. If I go outside these days, even to take out the garbage, the door gets locked and I carry the key in my pocket.
Sad it's come to this these days, but with home invasions on the rise in the last decade or two, that's the way life is now.
As kids, our doors were almost always unlocked during the day and we (as kids) would go bike-riding, to a friend's house, or walk to the local pool for a swim, or skating rink for a few twirls on the ice, and come home to be able to just open the door and walk in when it was time for dinner. In summer sometimes we'd be gone for hours before returning - certainly not the case now. Between home-invasions, and child-abductions and shootings these days (among other things), it seems you can't even feel safe in any environment anymore.
Sad society has come to this - but you learn to adapt and take your precautions.

My door is usually locked whenever I'm home (and when I'm not, of course). If I'm working in the back yard the front door is locked. I'll leave it unlocked when I take the garbage to the curb, but that's just a few hundred feet and it's very unlikely someone would be waiting in the woods to get in the house in that time frame. However, the dogs are loose in the house then, so I'd know it if someone did try to sneak in. The only time the door is left unlocked is when it's really hot. Then I'll have the main door open and the screen door locked...and the dogs inside with me that would let me know if someone made entry.

The fact that I lock the doors at night is an improvement considering I never used to lock the doors at all. In college I left them unlocked and so did all my roommates regardless of whether anyone was home. Once we came back from a game and our apartment had been cleaned and there was a fresh pizza waiting on the coffee table with a note. Some guys from out of town had stopped by looking for us but we were gone all day. We even left it unlocked while we were all away for spring break. Not once was the door locked in 2 years.

I lock my doors at night when we are sleeping there. Otherwise... Nope. Then, I don't live in a big city or anything.. ? I rarely lock my doors and I do live in a big, big city. The worst thing that ever happened was finding the meter reader in my kitchen, reading the meter. He said he thought he heard me yell to come in. No biggie.

My mailman frequently leaves my mail on my table if I'm not home and there is a box. My favorite UPS girl will too if the weather is bad.
