DDD is a 3D Systems, Inc., a company that makes 3D printers. The applications for 3D are many and I thought this might be a good stock to get in on. It would be a growth stock. I have avoided those because I have been burned before. However, I do think this one has tremendous potential. It is trading around $56-$57 right now, the high end of its range.
Do any of you have any thoughts about this stock? I think there is tremendous potential here. I do not own any shares of this stock-yet.

www.finviz.com/quote.ashx?t=DDDLooking at the chart and possible earnings growth going in to 2015, this may be worth buying at present prices. I am too old to be much of a "growth" investor, but for those who are, the stock appears to have "potential". If I were much younger, I would go for it. Let's see what others think..............

Another stock which may be better to buy is Agrium (AGU). I may go with this one, it has a really good dividend.

My problem with DDD and the others in the field is this........who is going to be the winner? This technology is developing so fast it is hard to determine who is on the cutting edge and who isn't. For instance...in the electric car arena Tesla (TSLA) in on the cutting edge technology-wise regarding the batteries and the safety equipment for them. But will that technology edge translate to commercial success versus the marketing and economies of scale advantages of a Toyota or Honda? I wish I knew more.

Yep, truly this is the definition of risk. You don't know how it is going to roll out and if you don't get in now, you miss the boat entirely.

DDD will eventually be bought out. I own DDD and have done very well with it but the stock is ahead of itself. At current prices I would be very cautious. If you do buy it, it should be treated just the same as if you were placing a bet in a casino.
Yes, if you are looking for quality investments buy a Large Cap stock, that pays great Dividends and has Iconic Products or Services - Think Exxon, 3-m, Cheveron, Proctor & Gamble, JNJ, Coca Cola, ................ See the Dividend Thread or Long Term Investor thread. WXYZ regulary posts his "Model" Portfolio.

Thanks for your insight. I agree with your assessment of DDD after I spoke to another person about it this afternoon. They basically said the same thing you did.
I have a lot of large cap stocks and own just about every American Fund offered. I was looking for something a little different, but at my age, should probably stick to the same types of investments I already have.

Always put SAFETY FIRST for sound investing. Your last paragraph, above, really is a sound decision.

.....
I own some DDD at a much lower price and its a long term hold.
3D Systems may break out of base, levels to watchBY Fly On The Wall 9— :52 AM ET 06/23/2014 The stock is up 2.4% at time of writing to $54.62, putting price close to the upper end of the trading range since April. A breakout above $56.95, the peak price of the range from April until now, would be bullish for future price and would put the stock back on a bullish path. Support is currently at $54.20.
as of today, the three month support is 49.32
