What have you done so far? How do you feel after this long winter? (In most areas, yes, I'm looking at you, NoNamePerson, LOL!) At our house, so far, DH and I have: ~Put up two new blinds in two front windows. ~He started burying weeds and laying down weed barrier in the backyard. ~Cleaned out the front flower bed and containers (we choose not to plant until after Memorial Day due to weather). ~We put our old couch and recliner out to the curb this morning for our annual community clean up picker upper. ~The new sectional was delivered this morning. ~We're having someone clean the carpets in a few weeks. ~DH bought a new bird feeder for outside the kitchen window ~I researched and DH helped me repair our dishwasher. ~I also researched a few other to do's such as how to tighten a toilet seat. ~While furniture shopping on Sunday, I found the water feature I want for our back yard. We have a sketch of how we want the back yard. We'll focus on zeroscaping, as well as rose bushes, since I have luck with them. We'll also install horseshoe pits, tether-ball, and badminton. We also need to buy outdoor furniture and hot tub, and build a gazebo, but the SS in me is screaming SLOW DOWN, so we'll do just that.

Basic yard cleaning has been done, the tool cupboard has been purged and organized, living room given a thorough cleaning, started purging my bedroom, getting ready for flowers in the yard and getting the air conditioner tuned up. For me this is a good start this early!

We just got new carpeting in the living room/dining room... what a difference! I need to have our a/c serviced before summer hits. We will be renting a dumpster and clearing out our side yard and garage which will then allow room for us to purge the closets and stage everything in the garage until we either drop it off somewhere or arrange a pickup. We hope to have the sale of our second home close no later than July 1 and once we get the money from that we have plans to do a reno on the kitchen, redo the landscaping in the backyard, do some drywall repair, possibly add baseboards throughout the house and get some new furniture. Once we've purged all of the closets and have everything organized, I will be hiring a cleaning lady to come in hopefully every week. We are way too busy for me to even try and maintain a somewhat clean house. DH is actually insisting I get someone sooner rather than later... who am I to argue?

It I wrote what I think about the long winter I would be banned for life!!! Now I may be raking leaves AGAIN, picking up limbs from the friggin storm that rolled thru last night. That is my spring cleaning for this year!!

My master in library science classes are over this Friday, so I guess I better start on a list of things to get done for spring cleaning. My bathroom, kitchen, and living room are usually taken care of pretty well since those are the areas "open to the public." My bedroom and spare room....not so much.

So far all I've done is had some things done in the yard, had the carpet cleaned and painted the ceilings, walls and part of the trim in 2 rooms and the hall. I have another bedroom and a bathroom to paint after I finish the trim and doors in the rooms I've already painted. If you ever want to know how clean (or not ) your house really is, get it ready to paint it yourself. I wipe down my walls and baseboards every so often and chase cobwebs regularly, and it looked like none of it had ever been done.

I seldom do "spring cleaning" in the spring. That is when I go outside & clean, plant, rearrange, add new items, plant some veggies and any other chores that need done out there. Once it turns HOT....too hot to stay outside all day....I come inside & clean. I'll do one room a day from top to bottom, so it will take me about a week unless I run into a problem some place.
In the mean time, on rainy days or messed up days, I can clean closets and other things like that.
The veggie gardens are doing pretty good right now but will get busy in a couple of weeks...more peas and green beans will be ready to pick. Then the onions should be getting ready to pull. The flower beds are nearly done...weeding/mulching but I do have one bed that never got cleaned out last year so that will probably be a 2 day job...I'll have to dig out that nasty Bermuda grass that encroached.

I don't consider gardening to be spring cleaning.
I have, this week, gradually started working on the house interior. I try to do 1 type of chore at a time like today is cobweb & baseboard dusting, tomorrow is vacuuming all carpets, Fri is washing the floors that take vinegar water, Sat is floors that take pine cleaner..........

Yeah, every other week just doesn't cut it at our house... the house is a disaster about 3 days after they've cleaned! I want mopping, dusting vacuuming doen every week and then every other week they can alternate the kitchen and bathrooms. I don't have them do laundry or change sheets... just the cleaning that I suck terribly at... LOL LOL! I hear you! I was having a similar discussion with DH over the weekend. Told him I'd like to pay someone to furniture shop, grocery shop, fuel my truck, drop off/pick up my dry cleaning, buy vacuum cleaner bags, etc. etc. But, for now I'll settle for a house cleaner once a month.

I don't consider gardening to be spring cleaning. Maybe if you have a 5 acre front yard and 18 flower beds....ranging in size from 4' triangles to an oval 20' wide & 60' long...you might change your mind! Oh, and one fence bed is about 90' long & 8' wide. And that doesn't count the 3' wide beds all the way around the house (excluding the carport). Bushes/shrubs needed trimmed, some things that are going by-by needed dug out, some needed weeded and new mulch applied...and the pine straw mulch has to be raked up and transported to the beds...in my little trailer...raking it up from our back woodsy area. Any leftover annuals from last year needed pulled out. New plants needed put in. The 10 new pots that were bought needed to be filled with plants & "my" potting mix needed to be mixed up in 5 gal. lots to fill all those pots.
So spring gardening is cleaning up a pretty large area for me....and I haven't even gotten to pressure washing the front porch & back deck yet. The 3 bird baths have been pressure washed and the 5 rain barrels will be next!

Baby steps on the Spring cleaning here. We still had snow here the week before last, & now we've got non-stop rain. So, no yard work until the rain quits, & things dry out.
We did do some stuff inside the house. Last weekend we took out everything from under our bed to sort, organize, or get rid of. I did the same thing with the coat closet by the front door. I'll just keep doing more purging & decluttering until the weather behaves...

How is everyone doing? Lately: Rearranged the living room to accommodate the new sectional. This also included deep cleaning with vacuum cleaner attachments. Carpet cleaner friend is coming Thursday. Have started researching an area rug for the living room. Am buying vacuum cleaner bags today. Tightened a toilet seat-DH did the other loose one. Put the DVD/VCR tapes and holder in the coat closet. Am going to donate three vases to my flower shop owning friend. Have started another clothing donation pile. Rid/relocated several items out of the coat closet. Depending on what they were, they were tossed, put in with Christmas items, dropped off at the dry cleaners, or put into the laundry room cabinet. A small bag of items are going back to the Lions Club. I also rearranged the living room knickknacks DH is still out of town, so I am going to work on the ice dispenser. The fact it hasn't worked in years drives me

I really started seriously working in January. My house is a wreck. It has had little to no attention for the past 2-3 years that I have been dealing with some chronic health problems. I am still just in the purging stage, and have lost count how much has left the house. There is still a TON left to do so I keep plugging away... I will be renting a dumpster this summer when I have time, and some help, to purge the basement and garage. I have purged most of the kitchen cabinets, donated tons of stuff, rearranged cabinets, etc. Going through boxes, upon boxes, upon boxes of paper clutter, old mail, and crap. I have gotten the worst of my bedroom done. Still working on about 2 baskets of clothes that I need to try on and decide whether to keep or purge. I have sold and donated an absolute TON of clothes, returned anything that still had tags, and I replaced ALL of my hangers ( and that is a lot) with the thin black velvet hangers and it makes SUCH a huge difference. The closet looks so much better! I still have a new bed frame, that I bought last fall, that still needs to be put together, but I need help doing it. Unfortunately, I had to bring a bunch of extra crap back into my house cuz I sold my camper a couple of weeks ago, but I am DEFINITELY not complaining about the sale, just all the extra work it made! I have been cleaning areas that have gone ignored for a long, long time. It is unreal the amount of crap that a house can hold, and it is also unreal the clutter that we just stop noticing because it has been there for so long! At this rate, I might be done in 192 years....

Oh, and my goal is, if and when I have gotten enough clutter out of the way, I WILL be treating myself to someone coming in to clean (deep clean) every other week cuz I still have a hard time doing many of the heavy cleaning jobs.

We got behind the couch yesterday and cleaned. Sometimes being oblivious is better. DH can't figure out how the hell that much crap gets under there without someone physically putting it there. I theorize that couches and beds are like black holes, they suck in anything that gets near them.

Well, DH tried to get ahead of the game. We usually put in the garden around Memorial Day, but he decided to plant the seeds this week. We got a LOT of rain today, so we'll see in several days if everything got washed out, & we need to start over. The plants aren't going outside yet, because we've still been getting hard frosts.
I'm still taking bids on getting our flooring replaced in the kitchen/diningroom & entryway. The bids have been higher than expected.

Holy Cr@p we are a bunch of busy beavers. I don't have time to read everyone's response but, I bought my spring plants $150 worth. and potted them. We pulled out all the rosebushes the winter killed and bought $200 woth of replacemnts and planted them. We replaced the much in all our beds (Pick up truck of mulch). I am getting ready to move a lateral file cabinet so I have destroyed old records going back to 1998! We will move the file cabinet this weekend. Then I have to clean the house for a b-day party for my FIL. If I get lucky the party won't be at my house and I can more thoughouly clean the house. I think I need to take on a modified 40 bag challenge. Im guessing 10-20 bags need to go.

Not cleaning exactly, but this has been our week: The builder never did a final grading of our yard before this awful Bermuda grass sod was put down, so we had areas of large depressions that needed to be filled in. We asked builder for some dirt, oh yes, right away.....uh huh! Well that never showed up, surprise surprise, so we started using a pile of dirt from the construction next door.
We spent 2 days hauling dirt in a big orange Home depot bucket, dumping it followed by more dirt etc. We get it done on Wednesday, which including reseeding most of the front yard with the disgusting Bermuda grass. Thursday morning the sprinkler system comes on (we don't control it the HOA does). Oh boy, it comes on again Thursday afternoon, all the areas of work in the front yard are now looking like a small mud puddle. Varrrrrom........here comes the big mowers.....yep time to cut the front yard mud puddle. The mowers then proceed to undo everything we just spent 2 days doing. To say I was upset is not quite how I would describe it.
Contacted the HOA president, told him to tell the lawn guys to NOT come into our front yard to mow for at least 2 weeks, give us a chance to get the grass seed started, please? Well, answer was vague to say the least.
Friday day after the mowers? Damn sprinkler comes on again.......
Today We no longer have a mud puddle, we're headed for a giant pond in the front yard as the sprinkler system comes on again. Poor little tree has about 5" of water standing at it's base.
How can anyone tell me our days for water are Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday and nothing about having the damn system come on twice a day?
<rant over>
Oh, and we have a forecast of rain for the next 7 days.

This is an over 55 community, but things are not quite the way it was described. We believe our builder is totally fed up with us. We have this silly notion when you promise something, you fulfil that promise.
I've been the HOA president for too many years to not know how to do things. Our current Pres wants to be able to tell everyone he is the Pres, but I worked at it. If someone complained about the yard people, I was out there to find out what happened, how it looked and there when the yard people were going to fix it.
All we get from this guy is deer in the headlight looks. That's why we took it upon ourselves to do this yard work...you know, the work the HOA is supposed to do. Plants died, we replaced them rather than waiting around for someone else to do it. If the builder wasn't going to fix the yard (he only had 7 months to do it) we did it. Now, because Mr. Pres has no idea what the devil to do, we have a mess on our hands.
Ooops, time for our Husker baseball game, time to stop complaining. It's time now to yell...GO BIG RED!!!!

OMGoodness! What happened to the 3 day weekend? The cleaning continues: Did the usual 7 loads laundry Vacuumed the staircase, including using two different attachments to get into the corners and edges. Washed all 5 bathmats Scrubbed the master bath, did the floors in two bathrooms Pulled weeds in the front yard Bought sunflower seeds instead of a mix for the birds. They seem to only like the sunflower seeds and toss the rest onto the ground. Messy! Went to the hardware store, lumber yard and tree farm with DH. The plants, bushes and what will be two tall grasses for privacy have been planted in the back. The horseshoe pits are nearly complete, and we decided where to put the tether ball area. Spread rock, regular and rubber mulch out back. DH found a sprinkler system leak yesterday and began working on it. Swept, Swiffered and vacuumed the main floor Took some of the river rock from out back, washed it, and put it into two candle holder vases for the living room. Neat! Ridding of more clutter! Skimmed through and tossed another 4 magazines, gave the nieces a water bottle and plastic ice tea lidded cup with bling I received at a party last week, and gave my sis a mag she's interested in. DH made his first batch of sun tea. DH took his old grill to the shop, and will move his Traeger in it's spot We researched patio furniture and hot tubs. Phew!

I got the closets and dressers organized. DH has three cammo T-shirts he wears, one pair of shorts and one pair of jeans he wears when he has no choice in the winter. Yet I counted FIVE pairs of jean shorts, FOUR pairs of jeans, TWO pairs of kakis and his shirts take up over half the closet!! I pitched a lot of his stuff. The rest I put on hangers all facing one direction so I can keep track, I told him if they aren't worn by the end of December they are gone. He gives me crap all the time about having "too many clothes". Well at least I freaking wear all my clothes! An entire dresser full of crap he doesn't wear. Then he has a fit when I start stuffing things into garbage bags for donation. Hoarder.

I received an email from the HOA president. Our windows will be washed June 18-20, both inside and out. We have 7 windows @ $8 each. Woohoo! Time to get some of the construction stuff of them.

Well, we did have the party for FIL this weekend. We cleaned the upstairs, swept & mopped then rented a carpet cleaner and DH washed the carpets. My son wanted everything off bathroom counter for the party so I went through everything in the family bath. All hair dye stuff and extra hair dryer went downstairs. All little girl hair ties/baretts and hair bands went to MIL for my niece and a box that was on the floor of the family bath since we moved in was tossed. It was all my old makeup. We have been here 9 years! On Monday I cleaned up from party and re-did floors. DH asked me to pull the boxes of shoes out of the front closet and sweep up the sand/salt that accumulates. I said I don't feel like it so he got up, pulled the boxes out And vacuumed. He left the shoes out so I went through and put pairs together. I pulled out at least 12 pair of shoes and asked my kids if we should keep or save and every pair I asked about went. DH also cleaned all the windows/tracks on the windows Sat. I also vacuumed/dusted master bedroom and master bath.
I want to purge in my storage closet next and file in my office. We also need to spend time organizing/purging from garage.

If it is still May, it still counts as "Spring Cleaning," right? I can barely keep up during the school year.
So this is what we have done so far: - Removed and washed the winter insulating drapes from DH's bedroom and the office.
- Starched, ironed, and put up the summer curtains in the same rooms.
- Organized and decluttered the "linen closet," which is really the closet in the office with additional shelving.
- Cleaned and dusted the entire office area.
- Washed the kitchen cabinets.
- Turned the microwave upside down to thoroughly clean it.
- Cleaned the oven (ok, that's flip a switch)
- Washed, starched, and put back up the hall (public) shower curtain and valance
- Washed my collection of "swans" that goes on shelving in the bathroom area
- Bought 10 bags of mulch (20 cubic feet) and 5 bags of Miracle-gro garden dirt (5 cubic feet) to fill in where we yanked some overgrown/ugly shrubs last fall. Lawn guy told me to buy more and he would finish so another 5 bags (10 cubic feet).
- Scheduled carpet cleaning for Saturday.
- Ready to paint hall tomorrow while dog is at vet having a growth removed.
- Scrubbed the green stuff off the porch railings with bleach water
- Hosed off the porch to get rid of residual pollen
- Probably a ton of other stuff
My sister always visits for about 10 days in June. She comes next Thursday. Her visit really helps me focus on REALLY cleaning stuff after half-way doing it the rest of the year.
I also hauled a carload of stuff to the thrift store. It is very hard for me to give stuff away because I bought it because I like it. I have probably 15 tablecloths, for example. Some are round and some are rectangle. Some are for holidays and some aren't. You get the idea. I keep trying to get the number down. Anyway, I gave away THREE today. I liked those three a lot, but I did it.
