still not getting the eating out of the pantry thing....so I paid for all this food in my pantry at some point over the past few months....now I eat it all up and after 2 months I have to replace it all so I spend however much money to replace....or I could have bought a few things every week and had the same amount of food in my pantry spending the same amount of money.

I fix meals from the pantry and freezer, but usually do it when I have things that make me say "what was I thinking to buy this". It forces me to fix whatever it is and get it out. I would really do much better if I only bought things I know we will eat. My DH is a great one for tossing things into the cart, takes one bite and says he doesn't like it and won't touch it again. I get so tired of throwing that food out, and I usually end up eating it myself....chances are I don't like it much either.

Maybe the missing link is the fact the pantry items were bought on sale, with a coupon, and, therefore, in some cases, stockpiled? For instance, using a recent Kraft mayo comment from a different SS thread: Kraft mayo regular price $4.99+ Kraft mayo, bought on sale, with a coupon (if available): $2.49 Therefore, one could stock up on mayo. The examples could go on and on. Shopping this way over the past several years saves me a minimum of 25% each trip. In fact, I saved nearly $1,000 last year shopping with coupons, ecoupons, managers specials, and sales.

I had a bit of a time figuring it out. My best example is when I got 10 bags of coffee that would normally run $50.00 for $10.39 at Grocery outlet. There's almost $40 I didn't have to fork out for coffee I enjoy. I haven't paid for coffee in months, and I still have 2 bags left. It depends on how much you spend on food. I shop only sales and clearance. I have no more room to shop, so there's no need to go to the store till the weekend, and then my list only consists of 2 onions and milk, and I can walk across to get them at lower prices. I will not go to the higher end grocery unless there is a good sale on something I can't get anywhere else. Even though it's just me, I plan out meals, so everything I have in my pantry, fridge and freezer already has a purpose. I don't have a job, so the need for discipline and planning is top priority. I don't just go spend any amount, but I don't buy crap food either. If it's not on sale, I move on to something else that is on sale, and that way I never get bored. If I want roast and chicken is on sale, I eat chicken. If chicken is not on good sale, buy pork, and if nothing is on good sale, I eat eggs. If there is a good sale, I will buy enough for several meals and split it up for use with something I have in my pantry. Everything has a purpose. I don't know how else to explain it, other than I never buy anything at full price, and I never buy anything other than the occasional chocolate bar that's not planned for, and the chocolate bar is usually the first thing to get used

I think what singlemom is trying to say is that even if you only buy things on sale, one way or another you paid for that food in your pantry. So, whether you spent that money 6 months ago or spending it now - it will be the same.
There are certain items that I don't pay more than "x" for, but there are some items that I will get regardless of the price. Like milk hasn't been on sale in months, but I'll buy it anyway.

My breakfast most mornings includes a cup of Original Fiber One. It's one of those pantry staples in our household, and I don't like/won't eat "store brands" or knockoffs of this particular product. Regular price, it's around $5 a box. But if we find it on sale at Rite-Aid or CVS for half that, we stock up with as many boxes we can get (with an eye on the expiration dates, of course, but it's fine a month or two after the dates.) For us, this is worthwhile in the stocking up department since it saves us $2.50 a box.
We do the same sort of thing for Diet Mountain Dew (one of our "vices.") We ONLY buy it on sale, so when we find it on sale, we stock up.
Ditto Campbell's Chicken Noodle Soup. (My wonderful DH's fave) Ditto seasoned green beans (He likes them and doesn't like fresh or frozen) Ditto chicken broth. Ditto Ritz crackers.
Our goal is to have our pantry stocked with items we bought on sale/less that full retail. That way, when we have a pantry supply to eat, we're eating the same items for less than what it would cause us to go out and buy the items when they are NOT on sale.

Blonde Granny, can you so greatly disguise it that he'll eat it? No, it's things like odd flavors of potato chips...btw, I bought the Aldi brand of sweet potato chips on the recommendation of a friend....egads I thought they were awful. But, if I let those chips hang around long enough they could make it to the topping of a casserole. When he buys fresh bakery bread then doesn't like it, I make those into croutons. If it's some juice etc. or a new flavor of diet soda, it's left to me to get rid of it.

Utilizing what is there so as to use up food before it expires or to be efficient with what you already have. Moreover, planning meals with what is currently on hand(spices, vegetables, fresh and canned items) might yield a more cost effective way of cooking. Let's limit our fiscal overview to the current month. Perhaps this is more of a short term exercise which might help to highlight it's benefits. If one can have more time to seek the best price on an item instead of having to pay more for it as it's perceived need is immediate. If you plan meals based on what you have, that buys you time to get a better price and stock on on things that you want. I see it as a form of delayed gratification in a way.

This year is going to be totally strange financially. I retire a week from today. My final paycheck is going to ROTH 401K and taxes so no pay this year at all. I am not applying for SS until May so 5-7 months of no SS either. So the next 6-7 months I am living off savings and inheritance. One more inheritance payout after my brother files mom's last tax return. I will get about 400 a month after that from mom's estate for 25 years and SS. Other than that only dividend income and savings unless I sell an investment. I have about 10K sitting in cash but the ROTH IRA takes 6.5K so I will be stretched. I might wait on the ROTH, I always do it in Jan but have all year.

Anyway, since I have a Swagbucks account, I can either use them for Amazon or Walmart gift cards, and will be able to utilize them for free items, since they cost no money, I can get items for free and not have to spend out of pocket.

I don't have a any "new" savings ideas, but I am in the group of "stay out of the stores".
I did alter my grocery shopping to once a week in 2013, so I will continue to stick with that. We are also much more careful about using up leftovers. It didn't happen often, but there were times when food was thrown out. Makes me sad - wasted $.
I started a vacation fund in 2013 too. We have enough in there for a beach vacation in 2014, however, we might skip a big vacation this year and let the $ continue to accumulate.
I wish I could shop more at Walmart. However, the "super walmart" is in a questionable area, and I'm not sure it is worth it.

Quite a number of years ago we (the family) made a commitment (willingly) to "healthier eating." It was agreed that I would only purchase foods for meals and snacks that were healthy. Anyone who wanted junk food (fast food, chips, sodas, bags of snacky foods, candy/sugary treats, packaged/processed/preserved/chemical-laden snacks) had to spend their own money (DH) or allowance/babysitting money (the girls) to get it. Years later the girls are still eating healthy, passing on decent-to-good eating habits to their children and - if DH breaks down occasionally and buys something he wants to try but ends up not liking, I don't stress about it because I didn't "waste" any money on it .

Eventually, the market will put the items on sale as a loss leader to get me into the store. I will get them at below sale price. Also, I will buy what is in season or get it free from people. The money I don't spend at that time, goes into the savings. It seems like a contradiction but it actually works.

The money not being spent on food will be going to pay for my new health insurance, which will be costing more, as I live in CA, California Covered is my only choice.....

Since DD got married last month and is transitioning fully to adulthood my income and expenses are changing. They are still both students and will graduate in June. I still carry her on my health insurance at work because I can. Once they have jobs I still stop that. That is the only financial support I still give them, other than leftovers or random things out of the stockpile when they visit. She also has a shelf in my freezer as extra storage.
Last week we got her car out of my name and off my insurance. That reduces my insurance premiums by $100 a month. I am going to try and continue to save $75 of that each month. My income will also be reduced by about $240 a month because after this years tax filing I will no longer be able to claim head of household and will be going back to single status. I won't know the exact hit to my paycheck until next week but paycheckcity is usually pretty accurate.

Well, it's the second Wednesday of the month so I put $2 in my savings jar. Woo! Big saver here! LOL And this isn't so much saving but instead of giving into my craving for a pasta breadbowl from Dominos, I ate out of my pantry. Saved (or at least didn't spend) the approximately $10 I would have spent on the breadbowl and delivery tip.

Normally, the cheapest I can find tomato sauce is 3/$1. Today, a store had it 4/$1 as a loss price leader. I bought 12 cans for the normal price of 9. So, I saved $1. It was at my break spot, and cost me nothing for gas. I will continue to do this for months ahead, and all the loss price leaders will save me bucks here, and bucks there.

I'm guessing this strategy only works if you use a lot of 'pantry foods'. so in your example, cans of tomato sauce. we use jars of tomato sauce and use maybe 6 a year. so if I used your case, it would be regularly $2 for 6 and the sale price was $1.50 for 6....and it sounds like it wasn't your regular store so that necessitated a special trip. and yes I realize that it adds up as you add more and more things, but I'm just not seeing it as being a major savings. but then again, I don't have a lot of pantry foods.

@ dancinmama: Lucky I did take my $20.00 to GO yesterday. I found coffee again at $.99 cents per bag, bought 6 and looked up the regular price at the other store and it's $5.99 per bag. So, instead of over $24.00, I spent $2.40 for another let's say, 3 months of coffee. Major savings

I don't think I would be able to get by without a stockpile, since I don't have a job. I learned so much from a lot of folks here who spend as little as possible and keep lots of items on hand so that I don't have to take more than $40 when I do go out shopping. It's come in handy more times than I can count now.

Well, I caved today and ordered that bread bowl from Domino's that I'd been craving since Wednesday. Bad Coffeegrl, bad! Every time I order one, I'm not even that impressed with it. It's fine. It's ok. But it's not something that I take the first bite of and just moan with yumminess. But I hadn't craved one in several months, so hopefully it'll be another few months before I crave one again. So I definitely did not do anything today to help with my savings strategies and goals. Oh well. Tomorrow's a new day.

I have a weakness for the spaghetti at this tiny little restaurant. I only go about once every 2 months but it is amazing.

Coffee girl You are NOT the only one giving in to cravings. I had been lusting for Taco bell for WEEKS. Gave in on Fri and was not super excited by it.
It was NOT a big expense for either of us but NOT a need. Guess that is why I do keep some 'blow' money in my budget.
