No, the switch has power. It goes down about 1/4 the way and then goes back up. There is nothing blocking it, just that you cannot close it or open it from either the cars or the door. Hell, if I can get the second problem solved before TD gets home from work, it'd be cool! <we've got about 30 minutes.....no pressure!) I was having this same problem. had a garage door repairman out and turns out the springs/pulleys/etc weren't the correct ones for the weight of my door. how old is the opener?

In 2013 we have replaced the garage door, washer and dryer and we have to get a new vehicle really REALLY soon. Our poor Pathfinder has rusted through and parts are falling off the body. << crosses fingers about the hot water heater and sump pump after reading marvholly's post >>

I feel your pain, $8,000 in planned work on the house this month....as for the garage door, if you are having colder than normal temps, the grease tends to thicken up, making it harder to open. There should be a setting on the back of the opener unit (assuming it has one) that you can adjust to increase the opening pressure.
If you don't have an opener, it should be something simple that's blocking the way.

Our garage door did exactly that a few weeks ago and the spring was broken in half. Our spring was along a rod at the top of the door, it looked like 2 springs instead of 1! Cost ~$180 to have someone out to replace it.

I'm having a week like that. The new pre-natal vitamins I bought gave me hives. Went to a doctor and he refused to prescribe me anything because DH and I are TTC. He told me take lots of Benadryl, Clartin and Pepcid. Hives aren't going away or at least not fast enough to be noticeable, but I am sick thanks to all the Bendadryl I took. Pretty sure I managed to mildly OD myself. The HPLC machine won't cooperate, it's been leak city. Every time I stop one, something else leaks making getting anything done a bitch. I was stupid and managed to drip Acetic Acid on my arm while fixing said leaks. OMFG that hurt and there is nothing quite like smelling acid eating into your flesh.

My garage door wouldn't close sometimes because the cable would jump off the little wheel. It would start to come down, then go back up. I'd get on a step stool and put the cable back on the wheel and it would be fine. Until it popped off again. Then the board went out on the motor. It was less than $200 to replace the board and the little wheel.
If the door goes back up because something is blocking the sensors, the overhead lights blink a few times.
When the motor on the garage door stopped working, it was a couple days after I'd gotten my a/c fixed. I rarely have just one incident at a time.

What's the story The Walk of the Penguin Mich with the garage door? Mine is doing the same thing but in reverse. Door goes up 1/4 of the way, stops. DH can get to fully open if he hits the stop very quick and start again. My contractor says it's an old door. I don't want to spend the $$$ to replace. Enquiring minds gotta know!

That's going to be on today's agenda (after I get showered, dressed and go get the new tires put on my car). It was too late last night to do anything about that.
My gut feeling that this is a 18 year old garage door and it probably needs to be replaced but I'm going to try looking at some of the things this afternoon.

I'm interesting in knowing more details from Mich re: the garage door, too, but sometimes the sensors need to be replaced and/or repositioned. That is cheaper than replacing the whole thing, but I don't know all the exacts of what is wrong with their door itself.

I'd probably be buying another pre-natal vitamin. I can relate. Claritin isn't going to do a damn bit of good and Benedryl will only keep you from scratching the skin off your body.
One of my meds is giving me hives when I am exposed to sun and I'm thinking it's my thyroid med. Recently, a friend invited us on a cruise with her and her DH in Feb. and we're going to destination wedding next fall. I need to get this issue resolved SOON, because once the hives start I look like I have the creeping crud (or a bad case of chicken pox).
I paid $15 for a small box of Benedryl in Playa del Carmen last spring when I miscalculated the number of benedryls that I thought I'd need and ran out 3 days before the end of our vacation.

The vitamins went in the trash, don't worry.
I'm mad that he refused to give me anything. I know from my boss which classes of drugs are safe to take and which aren't. I call BS on his claim that there is nothing he could prescribe.
Plus I found it ironic that he refused to give me a script but taking massive amounts of OTC drugs for several days while possibly pregnant, that's totally okay.
If they don't clear up by Friday I'm going to another clinic and will keep my mouth shut. I can ask the pharmacist at Walgreens about the script once I get it.

DH can get to fully open if he hits the stop very quick and start again. My contractor says it's an old door. I don't want to spend the $$$ to replace.Enquiring minds gotta know! About 12 years ago I called a company out because my garage door wouldn't open. They said I needed to replace the door. It was going to be over $1k for a single car door. Then there was a bunch of other stuff that needed to be fixed at additional cost. He told me all kinds of scary things, like if I didn't replace the springs, when they broke, they could come through the wall into the house and seriously injure or kill somebody. I didn't like the scare tactics and called another company. When I called to get someone out for an estimate, I mentioned that it was a 2nd estimate and why. The lady knew exactly who I'd called first and said they get a lot of calls for 2nd estimates after that company has been out. She explained that the only time you really need to replace the door itself is if you run into it or it gets similar damage some other kind of way. Even then, it has panels and you won't necessarily have to replace the whole door, just the damaged panels. It turned out that the gears were stripped on the motor (or something like that). They fixed it and replaced the springs for less than $200. I didn't have any more problems until earlier this year, when one of the wheels for the cable got wobbly and then the board on the motor went out. My garage door is old too, but it's fine. It's the hardware and stuff that makes the door work that has failed.

What harm is there in giving you a script for prenatal vitamins if he knows you are trying to conceive? I found that I continued to break out even after exposure was removed and it took awhile (a good week or so) for the hives to finally go away.

We've had to replace broken springs twice on our door. House is nearly 20 years old. Only thing that is slightly scary is that the door slides down when it's trying to open. The first time we broke one spring and didn't realize it, until the second broke and the door came crashing down. The second time, we heard it go so we only broke one side and we just stopped using until we could get it repaired.

The springs have been replaced. Not recently, maybe 8 or so years ago.
Some of my moving boxes are still in the garage, so I'm wondering if one of those is what's causing the problem. I'll try moving around some of the boxes to see if that helps.

Not for vitamins, for something to get rid of my hives. All that's happened with taking the amounts of Clartin and Benadryl he told me to take is I've gotten sick. I'm hard pressed to believe there is nothing within Class B that he could have prescribed me. I just got unlucky and ran into a doctor who refuses to give anything more than a tylenol and a roll of tums.
So if they don't go away I'm going to another clinic and keeping my mouth shut about TTC. Then I'll ask the pharamcist when I go to fill it.

The garage is original to the house but I don't know when the current door was installed (did they have these doors in the 60's?) but it's old. The springs never actually broke, but one of the cables that run through them was fraying when I got it all replaced.

These outlets don't have a reset button. That's not it. I know what you're talking about because the bathroom has them. OK, I lied. There is an outlet in a cubby that you can't see without a flashlight. That outlet DID have a reset button and EUREKA! We now have power in the kitchen. Any suggestions for the garage door LOL! Same thing happened to me in the bathroom about a year ago. I had no clue there was a reset button on the outlet on my late husband's side of the bathroom. My electrician just grinned at me and pushed the button. Then, he accepted a chicken salad sandwich, potato chips and coffee as payment. Lawzy, was I embarrassed!

He could have said that then rather than giving me a lecture. I'm cool with there not being anything it is what it is. But he specfically lectured me that he couldn't do anything because I might be pregnant.

With the electrical outlets, are they the safety outlets? We have those in the kitchen and bath and if you trip them they have a tiny reset button you need to push. Just in case it was by chance overlooked. That's all I could think of. Just so you guys know the outlets around a GFI can be chained to one GFI unit, so while you might not think it is on a GFI circuit, it can be wired off the GFI unit in sequnce - I helped DH figure out what was going on with his outlets in the bar and I had to read the minisucle instructions that came with the GFI unit for him b/c he refuses to use readers. I think Apple is our resident electrician maybe she can shed some light on it. I also am spent out this month. I will be scrambling to pay my nearly 7,000 tax bill in two weeks. I hope I can find the proverbial rabbit in the ole hat. OK Now that I read to the end of this thread I see that y'all already figured this out.

The contractor to whom I referred in my post is the one doing my bathroom remodels. He's not likely to replace the door; you're usually better off with a door company that specializes in that work. I had him take a look at it with the idea that if it was something easy he could probably fix it.

Garage door might just be a shadow covering the green light. One of mine tends not to work right when the shade if hitting it. I also sweep the floor under the garage door so it doesn't hit a leaf and go back up. Sweeping is quick and easy so you may as well try it. Mine has two green lights facing each other and if one gets bent they might not see each other so bend them back. They turn red when angry. I'm lazy so, instead of "sweeping, break out the leaf blower.
It cleans better, faster and easier - you're welcome.

The garage door needed a little oil on the chain, working fine now.
However, we had to unpack some boxes for TD to be able to get to the box on the ceiling to be able to grease it up.
<still waiting for unpacking fairies to arrive.....they're about 5 months late>
