I used to have a close friend / best friend I would go over this with. oh well so what I read is starting in September to for 10 weeks, with a $50 buy in I could win $3k, IF I am in the top 3 most weight loss? or at least split the $3k between the top 3 weight loss people and take home $1k? there will be a weekly weigh in / I get to meet people / and I'll be sent email for motivation. yea I'm very interested, especially since I lost a $700 bet / challenge last year. winning this should be ...easy for me? maybe? getting at least $1,000 bucks!

This ad from our local paper doesn't say anything about a monetary prize ($3000 or even $1000). It only mentions the price of the two registration fees.

3 grand prizes does not mean $3K prize money. It means there are 3 'big winners' but the gift could be a trophy or a coupon for reduced rate on the program.
Even so, $50 for 20 weigh ins PLUS any sort of program seems WAY TOO CHEAP . . . so I think there is a 'catch' to this one. $50 for the competition, but then $200/mo facility or program fee or something like that.
It screams gimmick to me.

The ad is probably a lure to draw in new members to this fitness club.
The low entry fee price for the special 'challenges' is probably only for registered club members. Membership for that alone is probably pretty steep - and they lock you into a contract (usually minimum 1 year).

That sounds like a gimmick to me too. Just PM me every time you want to put unhealthy food in your mouth so I can yell at you or slap your hand away from the frig. If you don't listen to me when I tell you "No!" and don't lose the weight you can give me the $1,000. My plan is gimmicky too but at least I'm up front about it.

I don't like the sound of this either. They could be selling high cost supplements to help you lose weight.
If you want a weight loss support group go to Weight Watchers. I know there is a monthly fee and you pay if you didn't lose weight but I don't know how much.
At least WW has been around a while and is known for success.
WW is also online.
Don't bite on this bait.

see this is what I was talking about with x-best friend! LOL she would point out this kind of thing and prevent me from doing something nuts! see I was on the thought path of they are collecting $50 from a lot of participants and would raise a lot of money to cover the cost of a grand prize money and expenses! pyramid scam / scheme? now rethinking about it - oh I can't stop laughing had I gone through this and got a fucking trophy!! Laughing to much now!!

It's easy to get pulled in by things like this. I'm old enough and cranky enough that I play mind games and get a lot of information before I ask for copies of all paperwork so I can have my attorney look them over. I've been escorted out the door several times. Still can't understand why.

oh man thanks! this was really a good laugh as I was so serious and thinking - $50 buy in for a minimum $grand$ pay out! and now as I read over the ad again - yea I can totally see that this is not a money reward for top 3 weight loss, and there is most likely some sort of ....catch to this? however by the time the program starts this threat will be marked old. I'll bump it - if I go and mention what happened. now I am just curious! and hope I don't get caught up in something. wish I could go with my x-best friend, with her guidance I would be just fine! LOL

nope - didn't go it was held at the local YMCA! that's why I thought it was a program they do often. so many people would sign up and they would still profit. didn't trust myself - that I would purchase something I wouldn't use, wouldn't want, probably would have to sign up for a membership, and so on.
the weekend before the sign up day for this challenge; I went to the eye doctor. same results from my last exam 2 years prior. I could use glasses to see the signs in the distance better when driving! so my opinion I don't NEED glasses and wouldn't use them! but this new place said I should get glasses. like the last place said! but this new place was like ok pick a frame. I said no that's ok - I'm just paying my co-pay now. She said my insurance pays for most the cost. I said yes, but I still have to pay $40 and I don't have that with me now. she said that's ok because I can pay when I pick up my frames. I was thinking well I want some fancy name brand frames since I'm paying! I said but I wouldn't use them for driving. I can see signs just fine. she said yes but I'll see better with glasses and I can use them to watch TV; and when I wear the glasses everything will be clearer. so I gave in and placed the order for frames that insurance would pay for and I just pay $40. so now I have a pair of glasses that yea everything she said would happen did happen + I do like the way they look when wearing them + my parents agree they look fine; BUT I don't wear them.
so that's why I didn't go to the challenge that night because I didn't want to be talked into making a purchase that sounded good when there.
