I can actually relate to that. I get lonely, but at the same time, I don't care enough to do anything about it. I have to be around people all day at work. When I'm off, I don't want to be bothered - even if I'm lonely. Just the way it is.

Oh wow, I didn't know he attempted suicide. I read that he is bipolar which may have something to do with his problems.
I loved him in Black Adder.

I've always viewed loneliness as simply a state of being, that doesn't depend upon where your at. One can be lonely in a crowd.
When I was a teenager I would feel lonely, but College changed that. I came into being my own person not dependent on anyone else.

Just being around people doesn't mean you are connected or feel less lonely. If he would feel lonely whether or not on the trips, then it makes sense that he would decline.
I think a lot of it is mental health issues, which means his actions make sense if he is bipolar. I used to be extremely depressed and felt lonely most of the time. I wasn't able to connect even when in a group, which made group activities unpleasant and made me feel bad about myself. If I am going to be unhappy, then I would rather do it at home alone than to force myself to go out an hate it. Yes, this choice probably increases the loneliness and depression. But, to a depressed person, this choice makes the most sense.

Have you seen the documentary Stephen Fry did some years ago, Tennesseer? The title is: "The Secret Life of the Manic Depressive". I thought it was outstanding. It's two hours long but well worth the watch, IMO. It can be found here: The Secret Life of the Manic Depressive

My fsther's brother suffered with it along with two of my uncle's three children. Add to that the wife (my aunt) of same uncle with manic depression killed herself on Thanksgiving Day many years ago after being overwhelmed with all the mental problems in her immediate family. They were one heck of a dysfunctual family.

My daughter is bipolar, but has been very well controlled on medications for many years now. It was a roller-coaster ride when she was first diagnosed as a young woman, but she's done extremely well with medication and therapy. It's something I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy and my heart goes out to anyone who has to deal with the agony and the ecstasy of it all.

I admire his strength and courage, as well, for standing up to his demons and being brave enough to share his pain with the world in hopes of helping others. A good man.
